About
I live in the Gettysburg area and really enjoy The Eternal Light Peace Memorial off of Mummasburg Road. We used to go there in the evening when I was growing up and was a favorite stopping place. It was commemorated in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The flame is always on, although there was a period of time when it was not.

This was a stop on our bus tour.
It was very powerful.
Our guide explained the significant and how and why the monument was erected.

Our recent visit to Gettysburg was to visit the Eisenhower Farm. After dark we drove through the battlefield which really gave us a different perspective of the park. The drive was punctuated by seeing The Eternal Light Peace Memorial burning in the darkness.

A wonderful peace memorial over looking one of the battlefields. There is also a short trail here to the right of the monument that leads back to some really nice views

I never knew of this place before visiting Gettysburg but I am so glad I got to see it. Not only is it part of the battle grounds but it has history with FDR giving a speech there on the 75th anniversary of the battle.

If you are taking the auto tour you’ll go by, I recommend stopping. It was amazing to walk up the hill behind it for the view.

A little disappointed. I expected more, was more interested in a small cemetary more to the East that contained slave graves.

The Eternal Light Peace Memorial is a Gettysburg Battlefield monument that was dedicated on July 3, 1938, commemorating the 1913 Gettysburg reunion for the 50th anniversary of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt presided at the ceremony, which was attended by over 250,000 people, one of the largest public gatherings in history. A further 100,000 attempted to attend but failed to arrive due to congested roads. The natural gas flame in a one-ton bronze urn is set atop a tower on a stone pedestrian terrace with views from the terraced hill summit over about 400 square miles and the flame is visible fro 20 miles away. The memorial, sculpted by Lee Lawrie, overlooks Little Round Top and Big Round Top and was advocated as "a grand monument to American heroism on this battlefield."

The Peace Memorial was dedicated by FDR on the 50th anniversary of the battle. The eternal flame was the inspiration for Jackie Kennedy's request that one be placed at the grave of JFK. The Ewell's Corps encountered the Union troops in this area on afternoon on the first day of the battle, turning an apparent Union victory into a devasting retreat back to the town and Cemetery Hill.

This is usually the first stop on a tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield. I have visited this attraction several times, and unfortunately the eternal flame always seems to be extinguished during my brief visit (Via a two hour Battlefield Bus Tour).
