We're getting ready to do a 5-day back country hike in a month and wanted to try out new packs with a full load and Yellow River did not disappoint! Camping: We got in just before dusk, loaded on packs and hiked 2.7 miles to Browns Hollow campsite (you can also drive and walk the last 1/4 mile) . It... More

I visited Yellow River with my wife last year and the experience left something to be desired. One of the most disappointing aspects of the park was it's outdated map. I am glad to say that they have greatly improved the hiking map, so much so that navigation is much improved. It looks as though they have put some significant... More

Hidden treasure in NE Iowa. This would be a great place to ride 4 wheelers. It NEEDS a campground with electricity and the place would have 5 times the persons utilizing the park

This was our first true backpacking experience, which got us ready for our Rocky Mountain NP trip. We are a younger couple from Wisconsin that was looking for something beautiful, secluded, and somewhat challenging; it was all of that and more. We went 4th of July weekend (2 nights) and was a little worried how busy it was going to... More

We really enjoy this forest, and have been coming here for a couple decades although only recently started backpacking in. It has some nice trout streams and beautiful hiking trails. We've always stayed at the big paint campground which is nice and usually fairly private, we just recently started hiking in to Camp Glen Wendale, which is perfect for our... More

Earlier this year, a local family donated 378 acres to the Yellow River state forest. Today, I had the day to check it out for myself, firsthand. Wow! This place didn't disappoint. I arrived at the HeadQuarters at Yellow River to check in with the DNR rangers on hand, just in case something happens, you know? Better safe than sorry!... More

Great place for camping to get away from the hustle & bustle. Paved roads & easy access to the trout streams. I am handicapped and found this park to be clean and easily navigated with my wheelchair. Overlook areas are amazing. Caught our limit of trout evey day!

Great surroundings, peaceful, quite and a clean park. You can camp deep into the forest by crossing streams by car, foot or walking bridge. Lot's to explore! NO FEE to explore! :-)

First time we visit was in 1978, the last year our family was together for some years to come. We have lovely photos of day. Of course I am a little biased use to be family owned as indicated by sign says "Larkin Look Out" Love fact they have classes on forester, we have been back with different family members... More

I had not been back to Yellow River in a couple decades, but wanted to visit again, as I love taking my horses for a riding and camping getaway each summer. I found the equestrian camps well kept and pleasant. Solid hitch posts, and dump carts/pitch forks supplied at the compost pile for manure clean up. My visit was mid-week,... More
