Opera Philadelphia - think outstanding performers, forward thinking leadership and creative set designers. The Academy of Music - think classic grand opera house, cozy seats and intimate setting.

I love theaters where you can see pretty well even if you buy affordable seats. This is the case here since the theater is of decent size but not huge like in Paris, London or New York. The opera was good (Great Violetta and Giorgio Germont). The season is short (only 4 operas) since there are probably not enough Opera... More

Have been subscribers for nine years and looking forward to year 10!! First, the venues; the Academy of Music is the perfect opera house. It is ornate, luxurious and beautiful with high marks going to the recently refurbished grand chandelier. The chamber opera venue at the Kimmel center is stark by comparison, yet it is perfect for the more intimate... More

Don Carlo was wonderfully presented with a strong cast and an excellent chorus and orchestra but the excruciatingly small seats and zero legroom had us struggling until intermission when we left. It is a beautiful art-deco building with a gracious staff but I have never been seated in such a cramped space in any venue in my life. Built when... More

Walking into the hall is like entering a central Europe dream world. So beautiful. The opera was fine, professional voices, clever production, terrific orchestra. We loved the crowd too, the classic opera scene of suits, some bowties, fine dresses, jazzy jewels; this is the place for glitz. No grunge allowed, it seems. So make this your dress-up night, kids.

After seven years of living in Philadelphia I finally went to see Opera Philadelphia. Having been subscriber at the Met in New York and spoiled with productions in La Scala in Venice and the Vienna State Opera, I was leary of an inferior product in a city known more for soul than opera. I could not have been more wrong.... More

Keep an eye out for the schedule of this wonderful company. I saw two modern operas over the past two years that were engaging, gripping, and accessible. It was well worth the trip down from NY - and it's easy too. Amtrak to 30th Street Station, short ride by taxi (or SEPTA). And you can sample some of Philadelphia's great... More

I wanted to go for the Sunday matinee of Nabucco on September 29, and buy the tickets right before the show. However, I found out on Friday that there will be a free broadcast of the opera on Saturday night at the Independence Mall (the park) and decided to go for it. The weather was beautiful. The crowd was mixed... More

you gotta like it , the ambiance is superb. the performances are world class. the price is reasonable.. you are downtown, so parking is expensive so make it a night, go to a fine restaurant first
