Tour our house, view our garden and feed our koi! Shofuso Japanese House and Garden is a traditional-style Japanese house and nationally-ranked garden in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park that reflects the history of Japanese culture in Philadelphia, from the 1876 Centennial Exposition to the installation of its contemporary paintings in 2007.Shofuso was built in Japan in 1953 using traditional techniques and materials and exhibited in the courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was moved to Philadelphia in 1958, to the site of several previous Japanese structures dating to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. In 2007, internationally renowned artist Hiroshi Senju, inspired by our waterfall, donated 20 murals to Shofuso.A viewing garden with koi pond and island, a tea garden, and a courtyard garden comprise the 17th century-style Japanese walled and fenced garden of this historic site and museum.

Tours are available and various events of this interesting piece of Japanese Architect & Landscape. It sits in the middle of Fairmount Park and once you've toured this historical site, there's much to see & do in the area. It's a must see at least...More

I found this place on Groupon. Even if you don't use Groupon, it's worth it. If you haven't been there, I highly recommend it. The history surrounding this house is really wonderful. They have guides that will walk with you throughout the grounds and tell...More

In Fairmont park is a garden oasis with a lovely Japanese teahouse. You can feed the beautiful koi and wander the stone paths communing with nature. A worthwhile detour when in philadelphia.

We parked at the Penn Horticultural Society, not knowing the exact location of the Japanese House. It was a nice coincidence as the walk from there to the Japanese House was beautiful. The Shofuso house is small but well kept. It has a handout in...More

The Shofuso house was nice, but not sure it was worth the Uber ride and cost of admission. They offered an arts and crafts table, which was fun for young and old alike. On Saturdays, the conservatory closes at 3 p.m. The labeling of the...More

A pond with a few goldfish does not make a Japanese garden! This might be exciting as an "American Japanese" garden ie someone who hasn't seen much of the outside world might think the world of it. To be fair if you are looking for...More

It's safe, provided you're safe. Fairmount Park does have rough sections to it, but the south side of it is not one of them. Take your typical amount of urban caution, and you should be fine.

Only if it is light outside and you have plenty of company. Otherwise, be very careful out there.

Yes you can! My wife and I were just wed there in April actually. Genevieve was the person who coordinated everything for us from their staff.
