About
Shane Confectionery is the oldest continuously-run confectionery in the United States, established in 1863. The Shane family took over the business in 1911, installing elaborately carved woodwork, stained glass and curved windows to showcase the chocolates and confections made onsite. Ninety-nine years later, in 2010, the business transitioned to the Berley Brothers who own the nearby Franklin Fountain and whom embarked on a meticulous restoration of the building and business. Candies continue to be made on-site, with an emphasis on locally-sourced ingredients, seasonal specialties and old-fashioned quality. Beginning in 2014 a Chocolate Café was opened in the back of Shane Confectionery, illustrating the history of cacao in the form of luxurious drinking chocolates and brewed infusions.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great decor and history, fantastic staff.
Was happy to buy a $50 box of chocolate based on the experience and the fact they're all made on site.
However, unfortunately, none of the chocolate tasted nice. Would not recommend.

The 2 star rating is because of shipping. The website for shipping is difficult. Just try to order more than one item of different varieties. After a difficult experience ordering there is no conformation item is shipped. They give an email to inquire about shipping. They do not answer the email, they do not answer the phone, they do not call back and leave a message, they never send a shipping conformation. I recall this happened to me once before a few years ago. And I recall then when I called to inquire whether they sent out my order, no one knew and they had VERY POOR communication skills to a customer. If my relative does not receive the order, which they were quick on the site to take my money, I will call my credit card company. The candy is good, good luck shipping.

There was a wonderful staff person who made our visit to this shop extraordinary! Thank you for taking the time to show us the oldest elevator in the United States, introduce our children to the process of creating chocolate, and share your enthusiasm for your work. What a fun way to experience a classic confectionery shop!

This may be the most beautiful candy shop that I've ever seen. I love the apothecary jars with candy in them. They also had authentic hot chocolate (how it would have been made before chocolate bars). They also have old timey candies. It's a great place to stop in and check out even if you don't get anything.

Every time we’re in Philadelphia we always visit Shane Confectionery. This shop has a retro decor and is filled with delicious bite sized fine chocolates. The price is fair. The service is friendly, courteous, and professional. The chocolates are worth the trip. I highly recommend a visit to Shane Confectionery!

Candy here is amazing! All candy is made on site and there is a "candy cafe" in the back. Everything is "old" even the register. Prices were not outrageous in comparison to other boutique-type candy shops I have been to.
I would definitely come back here for more candy!

What separates Shane’s from other candy stores is its attention to detail. Here, you are truly stepping back in time. The owners care about presentation and it shows both here and at its sister store Franklin’s Fountain. Everything has been so lovingly restored with attention to detail. Even the shop assistants are dressed in period costumes. Even if you think you have the will power to resist, you should step inside just to see the place.
But once you’re inside, who are we kidding? How can you NOT get SOMETHING? I couldn’t decided and picked an assortment of goodies. I particularly loved the chocolate covered cherry and the honey lavender caramel. Of course everything was scrumptious! And did you know that you can buy candy to add to your BOOZE? True! I bought some to try at home.

I had planned our trip to late so I wasn't able to organize the tour (we'll be going back for the tour), but we made the best of it by having a delicious cup of freshly made hot chocolate (you can chose your size or have a flight of 3). I had the hot chocolate with jasmine leaves and orange and it was wonderful, especially on such a cold day. We made sure to buy some of the wonderful chocolates. This is a great place to visit and it is the nation's oldest candy store. If you love chocolates, add this to our list!
