As part of our NPTC Convention week in Philadelphia, we visited the Deshler-Morris (Germantown White House). It was one of my highlight visits -- tour Volunteer Harold Klein was extremely knowledgeable re: the luminaries of the period and how they fit with George Washington times of residence at the house. THis was rented by G Washington from some guy who swindled him on the price of the rental. Multi rooms including where he met with the new nations cabinet. The kitchen where the best cook in the colonies, Hercules- a slave worked. His painting is hanging in Madrid- Thyssen Bornemezza museum. They think it was painted by Gil Stuart. at... More

First, the Deshler-Morris house is listed in some guides as the Germantown Whitehouse, which can cause some confusion, just FYI. It's also really out of the way in comparison to other park sites and it's not in the greatest part of town. There were a few times when we actually did not feel safe--and I work in a large city...
