This was my second visit, the first time was in the early 90"s. We latched onto a group from NY that had a tour guide, the guide was full of information about the history of Philadelphia's African Americans. The museum is small, but has quality displays. Not a lot of exhibits, but enough to hold your interest. Recommend it for... More

Woefully empty. Being a relatively new resident to Philly, and learning that the African American Museum here was the first in the nation – I had exceptionally high hopes! Unfortunately the museum fell flat. There is an engaging exhibit on the first floor and second floor, but the rest is rather empty. There was a photography exhibit, on the top... More

The exhibits documented in this museum are so important for everyone to experience. It's a great piece of American history, relevant to Philadelphia, the state that has seen so many monumental occurrences. Definitely worth a visit!

We enjoyed our visit to the museum. I recommend putting this site on your itinerary! There were interactive videos, which revealed the political positions and contributions of key figures in Philadelphia History. There was also a display of 2-D and 3-D art. You definitely want to visit!

We expected a bigger museum that gave an overview of African American history. There were 4 floors. The bottom two were history related. However, the information provided was at times vague and limited to a few significant figures and in no great detail. The 2nd floor had interactive exhibits on 8-10 African American figures, but again, not enough detail. The... More

I did not read anything about this museum before going. I found the content to be very informative but the historic aspect seemed to stop at the end of the 19th century. I also enjoyed the art associated with Ntozake Shange's writings. Many of the exhibits on the ground floors are children friendly.

Went to Philly last weekend and was lucky enough to visit while the "For Colored Girls" 40th anniversary was being celebrated at the museum with a fantastic exhibit. I have a soft spot for the choreopoem since I participated in a production of it in college. The exhibit showcased "For Colored Girls" in unique, thoughtful and provocative ways and I... More
