Rubicon Theatre Company is a non-profit regional theatre based in Ventura, California. True to the name and the vision of founders Karyl Lynn Burns and James O’Neil, the company is committed to providing a nurturing environment for artists where exploration and experimentation are encouraged and supported. Now in its 19th Season, Rubicon has earned a reputation for innovative, reinvigorated productions of classics; and for the development of new works. The company has presented more than 115 diverse mainstage productions to more than 420,000 audience members. Described by critics as “the rising star of the Southern California cultural scene” and the “best theatre between Los Angeles and San Francisco,” the company has won a New York Drama Desk Award (four nominations), the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for “Sustained Excellence,” 14 Ovation Awards, a NAACP Award, and multiple Indy, Garland and Robby Awards. Luminaries such as Susan Clark, Dana Delaney, Bonnie Franklin, Joel Grey, Gregory Harrison, Bill Irwin, Harold Gould, Larry Hagman, Stacy Keach, Michael Learned, Ted Neeley, Paul Provenza, Linda Purl, Joe Spano, Bruce Weitz, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. and Stephanie Zimbalist have graced the Rubicon stage. Jack Lemmon and John Ritter made their final stage appearances with Rubicon.

We have been to at least half a dozen plays and musicals at this theatre. They pull talent from LA/Hollywood, around the country and a bit from abroad. The productions are sometimes unique, featuring lesser known playwrights, and sometimes traditional, like A Christmas Carol in the holiday period. This theatre is a short walk from historic downtown Ventura and close... More

My history in theater has been through marriage to a middle school drama teacher whose students and plays have been selected to perform at the state demonstration of "how to act" rivaling high school students not to mention being chosen drama teacher of the year. I have seen very good middle school and high school plays but never saw anything... More

Experience is likely affected by the performance seen the the seat location. Our seat location was poor, pushed up against the back wall. Fortunately, the staging was centered in the room. The charm of being in an old church was inviting; however, as you work your way down the stairs to the bathroom area it becomes musty and quite dated.... More

I love small intimate theatres like this one. You feel as if you are right there on stage with the actors. I have been here several times now and every performance has been superb! We just saw a one-man show performed by James O'Neil called Clarence Darrow. It was amazing! They also have great outreach programs and summer camps for... More

Wow. This little theatre has a great reputation in the industry and it is well deserved. The productions I've seen are as good as NYC; in fact plays developed at Rubicon have traveled to Off-Broadway. Actors are mostly from LA and the season is a compelling variety of old and new dramas, comedies and musicals. The front of house staff... More

I have been s season ticke tholder for the last 3 or 4 years, The company tries very hard to bring quality productions here to Ventura. Some have been outstanding, and all have been a pleasure to see and also to hear (the sound system is well run and small size makes you feel quite into the show). I recommend... More

This theater is OK for local theater. Better than anything in Moorpark, Camarillo, or Thousand Oaks (except for the Civic Arts Plaza which is wonderful). It is somewhat comfortable, smaller venue. The local theater company is known for a few celebrity-level actors, but most are just above average local folks. No bad seats in the house, but the acoustics could... More

Ordered performance tickets in the first row and paid in full. One hour before the performance, I received a phone call telling me the seats were no longer available and we would be changed to the 3rd row. I understand things happen but it was the "attitude" that was not acceptable. No apology or attempt to compensate for "their" mistake.... More

We have been season subscribers almost since the theatre has been in Ventura. They do very good productions, for the most part. They are cast with good actors and we have enjoyed most of the plays that they have put on. Nobody can like everything and sometimes we aren't thrilled by a production, but, there is usually something about it... More
