Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

October 31, in Halloween, costumed kids (with their adults) gather at the Soldiers and Sailors monument at 3:30 pm, at Riverside Drive at 88th St, and march (to the sound of bagpipes) to the Hippo Playground at 91st Street inside Riverside Park. There will be cider and donuts at the playground, which is usually decorated with bales of hay and pumpkins. A totally charming event. Over at 5:30pm.

There is a nice walk on a river promenade and a small flower garden next to the monument. There are also free outdoor plays at the monument in the summertime.

It was a little disappointing to see the monument in such disregard. The landscaping hasn't been done in quite some time. There was graffiti on the monument itself. There was a lot of work that needed to be done. It was almost upsetting to see how neglected it was. Hopefully NY city does something about it.

The Soldiers and Sailors monument is located at the intersection of Riverside Drive and W 89th Street. It may be easiest reached by taking the M5 bus or the red subway line to 86th street station and taking a short walk in a westerly direction. The architects were Charles and Arthur Stoughton, and the monument was erected in 1902 to honour the soldiers who defended the Union in the American Civil War. The design of the monument was adapted from the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens, and has been used on other civil war monuments, and notable landmarks in the USA.
The monument is not accessible, as it is in need of repair, and protected by a perimeter fence. At the top of the monument, there is a message that states,"To the memory of the brave soldiers and sailors who saved the Union". The entrance door to the monument has "In Memoriam", with a sculpture of an eagle overhead. Just before reaching the steps to the monument, are two columnar structures, seemingly guarding the entrance. The names of battles, and famous Union Army generals have been etched on them.
In the park nearby, there are three canons which were used in the civil war. It is difficult to view the nearby Hudson River, as the foliage is quite dense, with many trees. This is a great place to relax, with many benches nearby. A short walk north is the Joan of Arc monument. Other attractions nearby include two churches at the intersection of West End Avenue and W 86th Street.

This massive decorative arch located on Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza is pretty well maintained. Though visitors can no longer climb inside the Memorial Arch to the observation level, the carvings and statues still hold their details and visitors can read the plaques dedicated to the Union soldiers who bravely fought during the Civil War. As impressive as the Memorial Arch appears from a distance, it is truly magnificent when viewed up close and personal as my wife and I were able to do during a walk around the Grand Army Plaza.

You can’t get too close to this monument which dominates its plaza on the Upper West Side. Dedicated in 1902 by President Teddy Rooseveltin 1902, it is dedicated to those soldiers and sailors who gave their lives in the Civil War. Flanking the domed column are two plinths, one on each side which are inscribed with the names and places of generals and battlefields in this war. Next to Riverside Park, it’s worth checking out.

Passed by with wife and daughter. Very nice monument to Sailors and Soldiers. In need of some fixing up but the whole area is a nice place to spend a little time.

I love the soldiers and sailors Monument in the beautiful riverside park on the upper West side of Manhattan. It's a gorgeous design, but there's not too much to see here. The great thing about its location now is the beautiful park that surrounds it. Definitely worth a trip to see it. It was built in 1902. Sadly it's in need of some repairs, and the city is trying to raise the money to complete them.

We normally drive through this part of town on the West Side Highway. We detoured to see Columbia University which is a block away. Gorgeous old apartment buildings with endless character line Riverside Dr. The memorial is impressive and has a lovely park area surrounding it with beautiful views of The Hudson River and New Jersey skyline. It also has parklike surroundings and is a good area for walking. Not sure how it is at night but given the high end real estate around, it's probably ok.

Stop by for photos if you find yourself in Riverside Park. It's a beautiful and imposing monument celebrating the servicemen who helped the US government win its war against the seceding confederate states.
