About
Founded in 2002, Home Cooking New York provides intimate and hands-on cooking classes at their Manhattan cooking school as well as private classes in students’ home kitchens. Our clients range from absolute beginners to amateur home cooks who want to expand their culinary education. HCNY’s classes range from the basic cooking techniques (Culinary Boot Camp, Six Basic Cooking Techniques, How to Cook Fish, How to Cook Vegetables, Pork Lovers Workshop) to cuisine-focused favorites (Indian, Thai, Korean, French Bistro, Middle Eastern, Northern Italian). Each 2 ½ hour class includes a recipe packet and has a maximum of 10 students. The class is centered around the preparation of a complete menu and culminates in a sit-down meal with your fellow students.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I attended Thai Food cooking class at HCNY on Jan 25, 2024. The group was small, just 6 people, so we got almost a private class. Entire class was well planned and organized. Each of us got some hands-on stuff to do, we asked questions, took notes, enjoyed our meal, yet we ran exactly on time.

John provided a lot of information not just on specific dishes we cooked, but also on Thai cuisine fundamentals, ingredients, and main tastes. He also shared some cool cooking tips we found useful though we are not cooking beginners.

We ended up with a plentiful freshly made Thai dinner consisting of Tom Yum soup with Shrimp, Fried Fish in Tamarind sauce, Thai Red Curry Chicken, and sticky rice. All the dishes came out delicious and tasted like in a Thai restaurant! And most important we've successfully reproduced these dishes at home one week later!

Thank you John, and The HCNY Crew for the great experience!

We highly recommend Home Cooking NY to all who likes and learns to cook!

I highly recommend Home Cooking New York! My boyfriend and I did a private in-home cooking class for his birthday and loved it! Jennifer made all of the scheduling and logistics a breeze, and Susan, our chef, was incredibly knowledgable, friendly, and skilled. Between the 3 of us, we made 4 dishes (lemon roasted chicken, Parmesan risotto, garlicky broccoli rabe, and a chocolate torte) in 2.5 hours and managed to do most of the cleaning along the way. Thank you, Jennifer and Susan, for an unforgettable evening!

We love cooking classes and this ranks amongst our favourite. We took the southern-style bbq and can’t wait to try the recipes in our own kitchen. Highly recommend for an afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of NYC

I love growing & cooking food from my organic garden, a self declared foodie! I was a little concerned that this experience would be repeating a lot of what I know but Erica, my guide, was full of information as we went around the market and created a great atmosphere on our return to the cookery class. We all had such a great time preparing our lunch none of us wanted to leave! A great time for foodies whatever your experience.

My friend and I were in NYC for 2 nights this week and chose Home Cooking New York's - How to cook Fish class for our first night. John Scoff was our amazing chef/instructor. What an amazing way to spend a Wednesday night!! The woman sitting beside us said. She had never cooked or held a knife. Our group included an interesting mix of non-cooks, scared cooks, foodies wanting to improve their cooking skills and an older gentleman from Holland, who had decided to secretly learn how to cook for his wife - while they spend a month in NYC.
What a great experience!! The chef, the lessons, what we learned, the food we prepared and ate -and the people we met. It was a very intimate and personal experience and chef John brought us all together for the evening of learning, laughs and food. He had so many little tips and tricks for prepping and preparing the food. I consider myself a fairly ok cook, but fish is the one protein I am the least comfortable with. Same with my friend (we had met in NYC for some food and fun). The class was so much more that we had even hoped for. John taught us knife skills, prepping and chopping ingredients and how to choose the fish and where to buy it. He showed us what fresh fish looks like and how to make sure we get it. We learned how to braise, pan fry and slow roast 3 types of fish. We learned about pans and utensils and the secret to timing the flip of the pan seared fish perfectly. He even taught us the secret to perfectly cooked rice. At the end we all sat and ate together. The end result was soooo delicious. We ate a great meal and talked to the new friends we had met from all over. John was a fantastic teacher and story teller. The whole experience was not awkward or intimidating - but relaxed and fun for students at very extreme levels of experience. We are already cooking our new fish recipes at home and we had such a great time last Wednesday.. Thanks so much to John Scoff and Home Cooking New York in Soho. We had a great evening with you and my friend and I plan to meet again in New York to take more classes. This is truly a 'hidden gem' in New York. Cheers.

First off, let me say that I've been to cooking classes all over the world and this one comes with the highest regards. Home Cooking NYC is small and quaint, it only admits ~10 people per class. You sit in a horseshoe shape around the prep station and help the chef prep your dinner. We had John for the Southern BBQ class and not only were his tips helpful, but the engagement he draws out of the group was wonderful and magnetic. The food was wonderful and included ribs, coleslaw, homemade BBQ sauce, mac & cheese, and a cobbler dessert. The environment was clean, comfortable, and enjoyable. The class offerings seem pretty widespread across the board in terms of cuisine. Of the 10 - our group was 6 and a Father's Day gift for our dad. Everyone had a very enjoyable time and I'd highly recommend - I'd also go back in the future! Also, BYOB - capitalize on that!

Thank you! I'm so glad you got to experience one of John's spectacular classes! And thank you for being our first reviewer on this platform! After 16 years in business, it seems no one has thought to put a review here (usually just on Google or Yelp).
