- Matthew JNew York City, New York18 contributionsA friendly place with a selection good enough to keep going backI came across Zabar's on a self guided walking tour of the Upper West side of Manhattan. I was a little hestitant to try it at first, as I was still reeling from a less than impressive visit to Katz's delicatessen a few weeks ago. Was Zabar's going to be another "family run" tourist trap? I am delighted to report that it is not. It feels like a real place intent on serving delicious food to local people at local(ish) prices. I tried the world famous Nova and was not dissapointed. Worth a try for anyone in the area!Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 November 2023
- EvaBothell, Washington1,170 contributionsDelicious salmon bagel and matzo soup. You would be amiss if you went to NYC and didn’t stop at Zabar’s. Go for the bagel with salmon and while you’re there, take some to take home. The selection is amazing. I was mesmerized by how they cut the salmon to order and their selection of cheese. Spectacular.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 December 2023
- Carolyn BBrisbane, Australia115 contributionsA lovely experienceVisited here after many years. Great selection of deli items and iconic institution. Had some great coffee and a sweet treat in the cafe. Wandered the deli afterwards to get some take home salads and some branded gifts for people at home. Loved how well patronised the shop was by locals. Would recommend a visit if you like good coffee and yummy deli products. Was surprised at the amount of pork products and stupidly assumed the deli catered mainly to a Jewish palate.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 April 2024
- Bryce SNew Hope, Pennsylvania2,223 contributionsThe best gourmet food store we have found in New YorkOne of the benefits of living in or visiting New York is the accessibility to Zabars, possibly the best deli/gourmet food store in the country. Zabars is a legend. There is only one location. It is not a chain. Years ago, it was said a member of the Zabar family tastes every prepared dish put out for sale every day. The selection of cheeses is extensive. They have multiple types of caviar and smoked salmon. Although the selection is great and the quality is high, the prices are pretty reasonable. The store has two floors. The top floor is housewares, cookware and other non food items. The staff is helpful. The energy level is high. Are there negatives? Finding parking can be a challenge. They have a deal with a garage across the street. Your rate is discounted if your parking setup is validated by Zabars. If you are a foodie and are visiting New York, a visit to Zabars should be on your agenda.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 July 2024

The only thing I have ever ordered is the coffee frozen yogurt. The small cup costs $3.99 and is big enough for two to share. This is the same coffee fro yo Butterfield Market serves on The EastSide. There the small cup is even larger and more costly. Bloomingdale’s 40 Carrots offered the same fro yo for years but I have not been there for years. Zabar’s Cafe also has coffee, individual pastries, bagels and sandwiches. If you stop here, you won’t regret it.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 September 2024

I am a long-time customer of Zabars. Yesterday, I tried to place an order for a gift and tried to take advantage of the coupon offer on the back of Zabars most recent catalog, which says, "15% off your purchase of $60 or more."
The system refused to apply the coupon. I spoke with multiple people at the store, who finally said the offer applies only to food items, and part of my order was a housewares item which was in the same catalog. Nowhere in the catalog does it say the coupon offer only applies to food items, nor does it say the coupon offer does not apply to housewares items.
Repeated attempts to get Zabar's to honor what their catalog says have failed. Finally after repeating my story many times, the store manager named Mario hung up on me. When I called back, he told me he would not honor the discount on housewares items and cited a statement in small print on an interior page that says "not responsible for typographic errors." This is clearly not a "typographical" error, but an omission that misleads the customer.
In my opinion, this indicates dishonorable business practices on the part of Zabars. They should correct future catalogues but honor their word in the catalog that Zabars itself produced and mailed to me. Very disappointing.

I do not recommend getting any mail order deliveries from Zabar's. I am still involved in a nightmare with them. I was on z-peat for 3 bags of bagels every 6 months. Then I decided to change the types of bagels I was receiving, like "whole grain" instead of "everything." The result was that instead of my usual every 6 month deliveries, I started receiving only one 6 pack every single month at ridiculous delivery charges. I called to get this corrected but was told that I had gotten into my account and changed it myself (didn't) and they refused to deal with it further. I asked that they cancel all further orders and that all mail deliveries be stopped. But they kept sending the 6 pack every month and charging me for them. I had my credit card company reverse the charges and put it in dispute. I received one credit but still I am being charged on my credit card! How hard can this be? Their customer service leaves much to be desired. Do not get tangled up with this company.

I've been coming to Zabar's since my high school days in the 1970's. My last few visits the food has been sub-par, but I keep trying to give them a chance. This last visit I spent $85 on Chicken a'la Orange and Lamb Shank with vegetable gravy for a special family dinner. No one enjoyed it, basically inedible. I also purchased Salmon/Whitefish spread and a Raspberry Cheese strudel. The same response from everyone. "This is disgusting." What has happened here? Does no one taste the food they are selling? The only thing that was just as good as always was the Nova lox, but I can get that al over the city for less. Sorry, but I will never return.

We had an amazing lunch just from the Zabar's takeout choices. We also went to the Zabar's Cafe next door, which has similar takeout along with coffee, danishes, drinks, etc., all at surprisingly reasonable prices. If you want some of the best take-out food in NYC, this is the place.

This is a wonderful NY grocer come deli that stocks anything you might want for food.
The deli sandwiches are delicious and great value as one sandwich easily serves two people.
I am glad I don’t live close by this shop as I would put on several pounds working my way through the extensive stock.

Because of glowing reviews, we took a train and then walked IN THE HEAT to get to this place, passing a dozen or probably four dozen delis on the way. This place was definitely worth it. My breakfast sandwich was so, so good. The place was busy at 10:30 in the morning (but the line moved very quickly and the food came out very quickly), so I imagine there must be a line out the door for breakfast and lunch. I'd definitely wait at least 10 or 15 minutes for the sandwich I had. I'll be back next time I'm in NYC!

This was my first trip to the US in years and to be honest we were disappointed in many of the restaurants in NY.
Zabar's never disappoints. Our room had a kitchenette and making a Zabar's picnic was so much better than dining out in many cases.
Duck on a Rotisserie, great soups, smoked fish, fresh bread, good bagels.
They also have a cafe, long lines crowded, don't bother just go to the store and make a picnic. It may be the best meal you have in NY.
