Address
Neighbourhood: Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighbourhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighbourhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
How to get there
  • 77th St • 6 min walk
  • 68th St – Hunter College • 7 min walk

Pleasant area of Central Park located along the east side of the park. Here you will find the Alice in Wonderland Statue and the Hans Cristian Anderson Statue. Since 1957, a storytelling program for children takes place at the Hans Christian Andersen statue on Saturday mornings during the summer from June 1 to September 21 at 11am. During the summer months, you can also rent model boats to put out onto the water.

The Conservatory Water is a delightful section of the park with the model sailboat pond and the Alice in Wonderland & Hans Christian Anderson statues. It's perfect for children!

We came upon this beautiful pond in Central Park and it was so lovely . We sat on a bench and enjoyed watching the kids operate remote control sail boat on the pond which can be rented for $12 for half hour. On the side of the pond you can get food and drinks there also. Lovely site. Enjoy and thank me later.

It's hard to beat the entertainment value at $11/half hour. My kids and I had so much fun the first day, we went back for more the next day which was even more fun as there was more wind! These boats are only powered by the wind, one control for rudder and one for sail in or out. It takes only a minute to get a understanding of it. My advice is "when in doubt, let it out" the sail that is. :-) Have fun and stay towards the middle of the pond as there was consistently more wind there.

If you are in the Central Park, and with kids, they may enjoy remote controlled sailboats. Nice place to enjoy with family.

The model boat rental at Conservatory Water opens up early April, but it depends on the weather. Follow them on Instagram to get the latest info.

It was unusually warm April day. The park was packed with people.
My son wanted to try sailing the model boat ever since he read the book Stewart Little. The boat rental area and Le Pain Quotidien area was really crowded since it was a warm Tuesday afternoon, many kids on spring break. Despite that, we put our names down for the wait list.
The people working there were very good about making sure to keep order. They told us 30 min wait but it was actually over an hour. We just sat close by and waited for them to call out my son's name. The model boat rental was $12 for 30 min.

It took a little while for my son to get the hang of controlling the sail boat. But he really enjoyed it. Bring lots of patience if it's on a weekend. The bathroom there had a REALLY long queue, too. In general, Central Park just lacks bathrooms. I don't know how people with very young children do it living here.

Bring a picnic, enjoy the beautiful park and have fun!

Sometimes the simple things in life can be the best. We had the good fortune of experiencing several great NYC attractions, all of which were 5-star to my wife and I, but unfortunately, none of them were to my boys. Until we made it to Central Park.

The highlight of our trip was a pedicab tour by Richie's Central Park Tours and renting RC sailboats at Conservatory Water & Kerb's Boathouse. We loved it!! Picturesque and "actual" fun.

This easy to reach destination in Central Park, just off Fifth Avenue at 74th St. is a place to relax and get away from the hubbub of the city while enjoying great views, yummy food, and the stunning statue of Alice in Wonderland, just steps away. Kids can rent remotes and watch their sailboats move through the pond as they learn how the wind assists them in their endeavors. Musicians play their instruments and add another piece of loveliness to this special place. Only a short walk away rent a rowboat for as many as 4 people for only $15 per hour and experience the city's skyscrapers from a wide open distance. This is a lovely experience if you're alone, with your family, or that special someone.

While taking a really long stroll through Central Park we decided to stop by here and take a rest. The park is very relaxing and quite large - plenty of room for people to sit and chill out. My kids (aged 9 & 7) enjoyed renting a tiny sail boat and steer around the pond. Also, it's right beside the Alice in Wonderland statue as well. It's definitely worth visiting if walking around the park.

Spent a couple of afternoons renting sailing boats here and enjoying a relaxing afternoon. Couple of places to get a snack or cold drink as well.
