I love this intimate theatre! Not a bad seat in the house! Acoustics are great. & Juliet was a great production to see here! Very expensive cocktails - did not see prices before purchasing and was shocked - $90 + for 2 cocktails.

Originally the Henry Miller's Theatre built in 1918 and now managed by the Roundabout Theatre Company, the modern 1,055-seat theater opened in 2009 at the base of the Bank of America Tower. Very modern compared to the other Broadway theaters.
Saw & Juliet there , a truly brilliant musical.

Easy walk from our hotel The Edison. Safe and just off Times Square. Mezzanine seats provided perfect view and audio.
They have an interesting coed bathroom options where you walk behind men at urinals to get to toilet stalls. Not terrible - just interesting. :)

Stephen Sondheim Theatre -- designated Broadway theatre -- is located in the Theatre District on Times Square. The theatre has been in entertainment business over a hundred years.
Opened as Henry Miller's Theatre in 1918, it has gone through several restorations and renovations, its original facade was designated as New York City Landmark in 1987. The Theatre was renamed for Stephen Sondheim -- an American composer and lyricist, in 2010.
The current seating capacity of the theatre auditorium is 1,055.
I was lucky to get a ticket for a new, ultra hip musical "& Juliet"; the seat was in the middle of Row J in the orchestra section, providing the perfect view of the stage. The show was sold out.
"& Juliet" is the highest quality musical, excellently scripted and superbly staged, choreographed and performed by a cast of very talented actors. The idea of "bringing" Shakespeare to modern times was quite bold and contemporary, especially with its strong message of gender nonconformity and feminism. The show was masterfully performed, leaving the audience in awe and admiration of the whole production.
The dancing and vocal numbers, excellently performed by the cast and ensemble were very strong and memorable. Thirty two songs by Max Martin from the 90s and 00s were presented on a high professional level, with some striking visual effects and properly projected acoustics; the artists costumes were stunning.
The main characters, exceptionally played by Lorna Courtney (Juliet), Betsy Wolfe (Anne), Stark Sands (Shakespeare), Justin David Sullivan (May), the ensemble dancing talent Bobby "Pocket" Horner (Rumour) -- and actually, all the actors made the show a total success. The musical was fun to watch and the pleasure to enjoy and remember the standout performances!
When I am in New York City again, I plan to see "& Juliet" again at Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Thank You for the Art!

We recently watched Beautiful here and our seats were located in the Left Side Orchestra section, Row A. The play was amazing but our seats made it very difficult to see the left side of the stage and there were a few scenes that had actors positioned there. Our view of the right side of the stage was also blocked due to many scenes featuring a large piano so we were unable to see that side of the stage for a large portion of the show. Being so close to the orchestra made it hard to here some of the lyrics, but not terribly difficult, just slightly softer than if you were seated farther away. The theater is very small and most of the seats past the 4th-5th rows offered great views in all orchestra sections. The theater was very clean and there was a comfortable amount of leg room. The staff will immediately remind you that there are no photos or videos allowed before, during, or after the show, which may be why there are so few photos available of seat views.

Stephen Sondheim Theater is a beautiful multi-leveled venue for Broadway shows. It seems that all seats, which are somewhat roomier than many Broadway theaters are closer to the stage for some reason. Modern decor, elevator service, bar area are all plusses. If there is any complaint here it's the lack of suffient restroom facilities which are quite limited making for very long lines for both men & women.

This theater at first glance seems very nice with elevators going to each level. Our seats were in the mezzanine which is on ground level. We were delighted until we entered and found a steep set of stairs going down to our seats. There were people who were unable to walk these steps, including my friend. Although someone in the last row was willing to switch seats with her, the usher did not allow it and she was given an uncomfortable folding chair in the orchestra. She wound up watching the second acgt on a TV screen in the lounge.

I often get dismayed by theaters being super tight seating, horrible bathroom lines, etc. This place was great! Very efficient and large rest room facilities, comfortable seats. The only issue I had was that I choose front row balcony. There isn't much legroom there as you are up against a wall. And there is a bar on part of the section that very slightly obscures the stage.

Our experience of this cute little theatre was good. We called in on the day we wanted tickets. The staff in the box office were patient and polite and soon we had purchased two of the only four tickets available in the orchestra so we were delighted.
The show itself was outstanding. The sets were simple but brilliant and the performers sang the songs enthusiastically and totally in role as the stars they were meant to be.
We loved every moment of this toe tapping fast paced musical.

I've been going to Broadway shows for years, but our tickets to the musical, "Beautiful," about the life of Carole King, brought me to this theatre for the first time. I liked its intimacy, compared to the huge venues; acoustics; and sloping floor. The latter meant that, as a short person, I could sit in the last row of the orchestra and still have an unobstructed view of the stage. And because that last row is only "U," I felt comfortable with the distance from the stage.
The theatre seemed brand new or at least exceedingly well maintained. I learned later that it first opened as a theatre in 1913 but reopened in its current form during 2009. In between, the theatre was used for many purposes, including a discotheque and a nightclub. In its current reincarnation, it has become one of two subterranean theatres in New York City. We entered at the mezzanine level and descended stairs to reach the orchestra.
This musical worked well on the theatre's stage with what appeared to be effortless transitions, which often contained a two-level scene. The actors' voices rang loud and clear, which I rarely can say at anytime with my hearing loss.
Ushers proved to be friendly and helpful. The refreshments bar at orchestra level was terribly crowded at intermission but everyone seemed to get served in time. I cannot comment on the restrooms as I did not use one.
The theatre's location between Broadway and 6th Avenue is easy to reach and near other venues, so there are many people milling in the area. We felt comfortable walking back late at night to our hotel, several blocks away.
I loved "Beautiful," but it will eventually close. Here's hoping the Stephen Sondheim Theatre stays around for a very long time.

Hi is the dress circle downstairs or is it a mezzanine level, which is the first mezzanine level ? Thanks for your feedback in advance wanting to book for Plaza Suite beginning of July and not sure of the layout of the Theatre
Written 29 December 2019
The answer given above is my thoughts as well. Any seats in the center part of theater gives you a good view. I also prefer the front few rows of the 1st mezzanine. Enjoy!!

We are looking at front row center seats....was it possible to see the stage? Were the seats too close?
Written 13 March 2018
Have an opportunity to get front row seats--wondering if it is worth it? Or better off back from the stage a little?
Written 26 February 2017
Front row not necessary and would not even consider unless you are center; you will probably be looking up. If you are to the side, you want to be further back to have a better perspective of the stage; a better angle if you will. Suggest somewhere around row L a few seats off the center aisles works just fine. If you are in the center section any seat works.

I need suggestions for eating near the theater.. Thanks in advance for suggestions.
Written 22 August 2016
locally we ate and reviewed Bobby Vans Grill and Hard Rock Cafe both good for the type of food they serve and close. The location of the theatre means you have an abundance of restaurant choices, enjoy.
