Since 1991, Big Onion has been leading informative, award-winning, and innovative walking tours of New York's historic districts and ethnic neighborhoods. All tours are lead by PhD candidates in American history or a related field. Big Onion has been called "The Best Walking Tour in New York" by New York Magazine; "Best Place to Take Out-of-Town Guests" by The Village Voice; and "One of the best urban walking tours in the world" by Forbes. Big Onion is an approved educational vendor for the NYC Department of Education and a Programming Partner with both the Brooklyn Historical Society and the South Street Seaport Museum. We are proud to be a 2012, '13 & '14 winner of the TripAdvisor "Certificate of Excellence". I've done the Irish tour, the TriBeCa tour and the Revolutionary New York tour. They were all really well done and completely bring to live old New York. All of the tour guides are PhD students in history or architecture, mostly from Columbia University. It's a very reasonable price ($25) for a 2 hour, really informative/interesting tour. If you are... More

Was looking forward to our walking tour of Harlem but we were very disappointed by our guide. The guide was a well intentioned but ill prepared grad student. He had a set of illustrations that he used at every stop. In between stops he gave no commentary and was not really prepared to answer many questions outside of his script... More

We are sorry that you did not enjoy our walk “Historic Harlem – Celebrating Black History Month”. We are aware that you desired a tour emphasizing the architecture of Harlem. The tour, as described on our website as well as by our guide emphasized the social history of Harlem, in particular the people of the Harlem Renaissance. We are sorry... More

Our group (about a dozen) from upstate NY have travelled to the city and taken a Big Onion walking tour in each of the past two years. They have been great experiences, packed with information that was presented in a professional, interesting and personable manner by guides who were obviously subject matter experts. One both occasions, it proved to be... More

We were in NY during the 2nd week in February & purchased the Harlem & Metropolitan Museum Walking Tours. When we were in NY 4 years ago we took 3 of Big Onion's tours. They are the best. The Harlem tour was quite challenging because we had a heavy snow storm the day before & the ground was still covered... More

Thank you for joining us on two different Big Onion tours. I am very glad that you enjoyed our "Historic Harlem - Celebrating Black History Month" tour despite being the day after our only significant snowfall this winter (so far). Our "America's Museum" outing is a unique tour for us - only one we lead indoors - I'm glad you... More

Elizabeth, our tour guide, was energetic, funny, and shared a lot of information about the Upper East Side area: its history, buildings, and people, tying it into immigration trends and development of New York City. One suggestion that would greatly improve tours offered by this company would be the addition of an audio system- a microphone on the guide and... More

Jill Thank you for joining our Upper East Side tour. We are glad you enjoyed the walk with Elizabeth. As I mentioned to you in an email, we do not use audio systems for a variety of reasons - studies show that tour attendees are exponentially more likely to wander away from the group while they can head the guide... Our tour with Nick was amazing. He was very professional and personable. His knowledge of this era was impressive as was his delivery (none of us had problems hearing or understanding what he was saying, which is often the case in a group tour). With Nick's enthusiasm we could actually picture life during the Revolutionary War period in lower Manhattan.... More

Thank you for joining us on our Revolutionary NY walking tour. Very happy you enjoyed the outing with Nick J. Its a great tour and lots of fun for us to share the history of New York during the Revolution with you...its a series of stories (other than Alexander Hamilton) that are really not well known. Hope we see you... More

This was the first time I did a food tour and I would recommend it to anyone. It gave another dimension to the usual historic tours and made me discover a lot of different ethnic foods that I would have never tried otherwise. We had a very knowledgable guide and the food was excellent. I espacially liked the vietnamese beef... More

Great way to see the City and get the inside scoop on the history and architecture of local neighborhoods. Having been on a number of Big Onion tours prior, the Dumbo tour did not disappoint. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and fun and was able to answer any and all questions posed by the group. Great for native New Yorkers... More

This was my second walking tour with Big Onion. It is called the Official Gangs of New York Walking Tour because after the film Gangs of New York was criticized for historical inaccuracies (in part because it was based on a book and the author of the book exaggerated the degree of criminal activity of the Five Points, and partly...
