We booked the private walking tour of Brooklyn for our group of 5 people. Our guide, Becky, began the tour in Manhattan, with a brief overview of the development of New York and Brooklyn as cities, and the subsequent linking of the two via ferry and eventually the Brooklyn Bridge. Although I lived in Manhattan for over 15 years and... More

I loved the architectural walk so much three years ago that I booked it again! Irina was our guide this time, and although we visited many of the same buildings as previously, her perspectives and insights made it seem like a whole new tour! Her knowledge of the City and enthusiasm for her subject matter made for a very interesting... More

I hate fluffy or vague or stale or scripted tours. If I'm going to pay for a guide, I want someone who knows--AND LOVES--the subject matter. Context Travel provides expert guides who are both passionate and personable. My sister and I toured the Frick Gallery with Monica, and it was exactly the type of intellectually invigorating tour I was looking... More

Really wonderful tour at the Met with Ms Monica Valley. If you have young kids and want to give them an educational, captivating, and memorable Museum experience, this is the way to go.

Ben was our docent, and he was terrific. He is working on his PhD in American Revolutionary History and was so knowledgable about the events, people and places of history in lower Manhattan (AKA New Amsterdam). He customized the tour to our wants and provided us the tour experience that made our day special.

We toured southern Manhattan on ""Young, Scrappy, and Hungry - Hamilton and Revolutionary NY" with one other couple. Tour was 2.75 hours and cost was $200 including tip. Our guide ("docent") was a PhD student in history that was well up on his game. Fascinating stories and easy walk. HIGHLY recommended.

Just spent the afternoon with Monica of Context tours visiting the gallery district of Chelsea, New York. I can't fault a thing. We were met promptly and just 6 to a group made it intimate and easy to move from gallery to gallery. Monica created an interesting itinerary of different galleries from the majors like the Gagosian and Pace with... More

While staycationing in NYC, I booked Context's Architechture of NYC walk with Hansel. What a wonderful way to learn more about my beloved city. Hansel was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, thoughtful & opinionated. We walked and talked and gawked at the beauty, artistry and diversity of this awesome city. GREAT day, FANTASTIC way to explore. Thank you!

Took two walks: Architecture of NY and Jackson Heights. They were both amazing: Irina is an Art Historian at Columbia and Pengfei has a PhD on suburban development in New York and Beijing. You really see the city with different eyes, and the fact that the groups are so small provide a framework for conversation and exchange of ideas. Can... More

We had booked the "small group 3 hour architectural walking tour 42nd street". It surpassed all of our expectations. It turned out that the 2 of us were the only ones who had booked this tour, so it actually turned out to be a very private guided walk! Our guide Irina (born and raised in Brooklyn, from Ukrainian origins) was... More

Staying in Flatiron District

Neighbourhood Profile
Flatiron District
Offering many of city’s best restaurants and shops set amid classic New York architecture, the Flatiron District is no longer under the tourist radar. At 23rd Street is the famous triangular Flatiron Building, which makes a good picture no matter what angle you photograph it from. Be sure to look up at the elegant architecture as you stroll the streets- much of this neighborhood is part of a historic district that was home to many of the city’s most famous department stores at the turn of the century. At the northern end of the neighbourhood, Madison Square Park is best known for being the home of a famous burger shack, but it can also be a quiet refuge to spend an afternoon, and it frequently hosts interesting public art exhibits. In the lower part of the Flatiron District you'll find Union Square, a bustling crossroads at all times of day and night.
