About
Avoid the traffic of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge by taking the free ferry to Staten Island, where you can marvel at the beauty of New York’s coastline along the way. The iconic orange ferry sails right through New York Harbor and is one of the best ways to see the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Snap photos, watch life pass by, and even look out for the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance. Upon arrival in Staten Island, be sure to visit the National Lighthouse Museum and the Empire Outlets mall, located right next to the terminal. – Tripadvisor

Its free and the views you get are insane. We decided to do this immediately after arriving in New York and it was the best introduction to the city and you get, with a good view of the Statue of Liberty too. When getting on the ferry from the Whitehall terminal I'd recommend standing on the starboard side of the vessel for the best views of Statue of Liberty and Downtown Manhattan - and the reverse on the way back. (Our trip took us closer to the Statue of Liberty going, than when coming back)Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 October 2023
- therichastillStevenage, United Kingdom3,466 contributionsIt's a FREE view of the Statue of Liberty! The Staten Island Ferry runs from the ferry terminal next to Battery Park to Staten Island. I visited in October 2023 and ferries were running every 30 minutes throughout the day and overnight apart from at peak times when they were running more often. At the South Terminal there's an opportunity to connect with the subway and buses. The terminal has places to get something to eat and drink and there are toilets here as well. I would suggest that if you want some great views of the Statue of Liberty that you travel on the right hand side of the ferry as you leave Battery Park. There are seats on the outside and if the weather is bad you can also sit indoors and create that "Melanie Griffith moment" from the movie "Working Girl". When I travelled the staff were all very professional and I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the ferry. Highly recommended!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 October 2023
- sepowell1New York City, New York52 contributionsIt's always FREE!Don't buy tickets! It's always FREE!!! You get a great view of the Statue of Liberty from it. Plenty of photo ops! All FREE! Don't be scammed by "Authorized ticket dealers" on your walk to the ferry terminal. Ignore their lies. Those are tours and the real Staten Island ferry is free. Lots of seating , bathrooms on board. Snacks as well. No tickets required to go to SI. It's always FREE. It runs almost all day/night every half hour/hour. I'm a former New Yorker, my husband grew up on Staten Island. We ride often.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 October 2023

Coming from the UK, it seemed very strange for such a service being offered for free. On arrival at the ferry terminal there were clean facilities & shops to purchase a drink. Boarding the ferry was swift and effortless despite there being a gathering of people. On boarding the ferry there was both internal and external seating allowing for a view out over the horizon. Needless to say the most popular side is that towards the Statue of Liberty, and it seems a number of people are well aware of the service allowing for a free view, making the trip straight across them then getting straight off to come right back. The ferries were running every 30 minutes on the Sunday afternoon we sailed, and both vessels were clean and could not see anything to moan about. They offered quick safe transport with an amazing view that I would do again without hesitation.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 October 2023
- frankie16 contributionsStaten Island ferryDuring the ferry ride we got a great view of the Statue of Liberty and could take great pictures. Would highly recommend as you get a better view than going to the island itself and it is free. The ferry was quite crowded and it was a long trip (30mins-1h) as you had to get off and back on for it to take you back. But overall a great view and experience.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 November 2023
- Ruth B3 contributionsSee the skyline at nightLoved getting the free ferry, packed with mostly locals returning home but also other visitors. Left late afternoon so I could see the skyline during the day then return and see the night skyline. Great outdoor access on way out so views were good but no access outside on way back so views were through windows - still great to see but not to photograph!Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 November 2023
- Wanderer581490148 contributionsFree and reliable transportation serviceThis is a fantastic way to see the Statue of Liberty without any extra cost. New York can be so expensive, so this is great. The ferry service was used by locals as well as tourists. There wasn’t a great demand for outside seating but that could be because it was a cold time of year. As a result, I had ample opportunities both ways to take plenty of pictures. Highly recommend!Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 November 2023
- nara501Boston, Massachusetts390 contributionsNice, free ride with a viewThis is a totally free service. So, dont listen to anyone trying to sell you anything. Great way to see the Statue of Liberty and a great view of the Manhattan skyline from the water. You can see the Statue of Liberty and a great view of the Manhattan Skyline. Plenty of room to spread out and get a good view. They also sell snacks onboard and there are bathrooms as well. It's worth it to just ride even if you don't visit Staten Island or Manhattan.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 December 2023

A free service and a great way to see the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan Skyline.
Please be very careful and cautious of people standing outside the building and outside the subway station offering tours at a charge. Tickets for the Staten Island ferry are FREE. These people are rude and will try to push you to their services, even insulting you (as we experienced). There should really be some policing of them.

In order to capture some of the City's majesty with your own eyes and through unforgettable photographs, plan to ride the Staten Island Ferry. It's FREE and you can either get off and spend some time on Staten Island, or simply disembark, walk around and get back on the ferry returning to Manhattan. It is about an hour round-trip. I love this ride at any time of the day, but especially at night.when the skyline is all lit up and the Statue of Liberty is silhouetted against the night sky.

The Staten ferry was ok but nothing to shout about got to see quite a few sights and bits of New York you wouldn't by foot. So many people try to sell you overpriced tickets which is annoying and there is not much seating.
The tour guide is very afformative and tells you history along the way and landmarks.

As a life long resident of NYC, this is one experience that I don't let visitors miss. The ferry is free and has the best views of the NYC skyline, along with great views of the Statue of Liberty. DO NOT let the scam artists talk you into the paid ferry or sightseeing tours (unless of course you want to walk up the stairs of the statue. Best views are from the back of the boat when leaving the city towards Staten Island. Most of the ferries have a small outdoor space on the back of the boat where you will be able to take priceless photos of the city. Eventually most of the passengers will figure this out and the outside space will become crowded, but at the beginning of the trip you will likely have this area all to yourself. Also, the statue will be on your right if you are facing the front of the boat. Best seat in the house is in the back right corner. Also, once you've seen the statue and gotten your skyline photos, make your way to the front of the boat. if you can exit quickly and move fast enough to catch the next boat back, then the entire round trip will take you under an hour. If you miss the return trip you will have to wait another 20 - 30 minutes.

This is a good free alternative to viewing the statue of liberty. But because it is pretty far from it, you don't get the same experience. The SOL looks kinda small. If you can afford it, I recommend getting a sale/groupon on one of the speed boats that take you closer to the SOL>

The ferry is neat, cruises smoothly and timely. you can view the famous statue of liberty from the ferry. Is good to visit during the late evening ours for you to see the beautiful lighting of the statue and the beautiful buildings and lighting of Manhattan on return. The good part of it is free of charge.

Catch the Staten Island ferry near the Battery in lower Manhattan to sail past the Statue of Liberty if you are pressed for time and can't visit the statue itself. It's free, runs 24 hrs a day / 7 days a week. I've taken it twice: once is warm weather where i was outside on the deck and once last week in January where we were inside. It's a 25 minute ride to Staten Island. Once you dock, you get off and literally walk through the building to get on a returning ferry to Manhattan. The skyline is lovely and it's especially dramatic at night.

We took this ferry over to Staten Island and cannot believe it is free...yes free!
Great activity to do.
Please be aware when you first arrive near the ferries, we got appraached by several sales people who said there is no free ferry and it costs $100 plus, IGNORE THIS!!!!!!!
Keep walking past gthem all as there are quite a few of them trying to flog you tickets, keep going to the end of the street and go in the Ferry Terminal where you simply join the queue and board the ferry for free, we went on the top deck which was great.
You need to get off the ferry and re board to return, we visited the outlet shops to kill abit of time and re boarded.
Great little trip to see Liberty!!

Besides being an excellent commuting way between Manhattan and Staten Island – St. George, it is one of the best ways to see the skyline of the financial district and the Statue of Liberty. And it’s free!
A 25 minutes ride offers the best views of the most southern tip of Manhattan, Governors Island and Brooklyn Heights. Be sure to be on the right side for Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in St. George bound ferries.
If you don’t wanna take the trip to the Statue of Liberty, there’s no better way to see it.
Bonus: Empire Outlets Mall just outside the St. George terminal.
Another bonus: There are plans by NYC Ferry for a new route between St. George and Pier 79/W. 39th Street in West Midtown, with a stop at Battery Park City, starting August 23rd, for 2.75USD per adult/way

We took the SIF on a really sunny day so we could get a great view of the Manhattan skyline as well as Ellis Island and the SoL.
The ferry was very busy going over from Manhattan but not as busy on the return trip where we were lucky to get a great spot outside on the deck area.
This is a really good if you are travelling on a budget as it’s free to go on.
Once we got off we took a stroll along the waterfront to the Brooklyn Bridge and did that too.

I’ll be staying in Staten Island and taking the ferry into the city. How safe would you is the Staten Island side at night?
Written 29 March 2024
Very safe. Port authority police, NYPD, security officers and sniffer dogs appear to operate on the ferries throughout the day. The crews are very efficient too.

If getting on the Ferry at the Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan, what are the parking options? Any street parking within like a half mile walk to the ferry? Or hourly lots/garages? Thanks

We have only one day in New York City. We want to experience as much as we can. Is it realistic to try to include a quick roundtrip on the ferry as part of our day?
Written 16 December 2022
Hi Malcolm, so sorry Ive only picked this up! I got the ferry at 6.30 AM which was a perfect start to the day. All told it takes an hour there and back. It was a great experience at that time but if you leave it till later it would be difficult to fit in.

Is there a lot of walking once you’re on the island ? Who would you contact in case a wheelchair is needed ? Does anyone know if that’s possible? Thank you !
Written 29 July 2022
Sorry, I don’t know. We just took the ferry to get a free close-up look at the statue. As soon as we got off we had five minutes to hop onto the next ferry to get back to Manhattan.

What subway do you take to get there and what exit do you get off?
Written 11 July 2022
Sorry don't remember. We were coming from China Town.
There is a subway exit at the corner. And you may want to check out Frances Tavern before or after. Oldest restaurant in NYC. GW ate there.
