Park located in the East Village that was the scene of a big uprising in 1991 when a decision was made to evict the park's homeless in order to renovate; today, the park is pretty and quiet, but is still home to many who have no where else to go.

The park is very pretty in the spring. It's not huge, but we still enjoyed walking around and seeing the different flower gardens.

We went to this park several, as our apt was two blocks away from there. There are like four playgrounds for kids of different ages. Our two year old twins really enjoy all of them. A bit crowded on weekends, but on weekdays it was a pleasure to see them play while enjoying the sun. We also get to be... More

Went on a beautiful day. Lots of people but plenty of space. Good condition. Great that kids area is segregated and for kids only.

As a young man, I knew to stay away from this place. Drugs, prostitution, crime day and night were every day occurrences. It has now become a focus of gentrification and a beacon for the young families moving in the area. Suggest all New Yorkers (especially "those who remember a different age, like me) visit this place and its immdiate... More

We brought bagels over from Tompkin's Square Bagles nearby to eat. Found a bench and enjoyed people watching. Lots of folks enjoyed this park today. Basketball, monkeybars, yoga, a few bums gathered, a bot camp working out, a small swimming pool, a children's birthday party, a blacktop area with skaters, etc. Some landscaping was shabby and some trash here and... Great relaxing park. We fed birds and watched flowers. We saw a hawk! It's a nice afternoon. Lots of passerby and handy water fountains.

This park lacks the class and allure of nearby Washington square park, but reflects the diverse character of the local residents. It can be busy during the day, with the occasional parade and street musician. Be more aware in the evenings, as there is a homeless element

Why??? Why is all the grass fenced off? It felt like the trees and grass were exhibits in a museum and the fences were the "hands off" signs. The concrete pathways were in good shape and the trees were full sized. Outside of that, it was surreal to experience.

The park is in the Alphabet City of East Side downtown Manhattan. Wonderful trees (American Elms), clean and a good place to relax. The "Tompkins Square Dog Run" is very good for your dog, too. In the end of October, there is a very special highlight: "Tompkins Square Park Halloween Dog Parade"- the largest in the country- incredible atmosphere and... More

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
