- Robert PYonkers, New York63 contributionsIt's the Metropolitan Opera!!!Thus far this season (as of December 2023) we've seen La Boheme and The Magic Flute and have tix for CARMEN in January and Madame Butterfly in March. Breaking news: You don't have to love OPERA to love opera. You do have to love live full orchestra music, a spectacular production, and the magic of one of the premier performance venues Lincoln Center. People from all over the world come to New York for these productions. Select a popular opera. Listen to the music and read the story before you go. And be prepared to be enthralled.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023
- Allan SNew York City, New York7,083 contributionsFabulous opera last North La forca del Destino great opera, fabulous orchestra, tremendous performance In an older doThe opera experience is very personal but last nights performance was clearly gur me one of the best I have heard in 40 years. Seguin had the orchestra on their best notes and the brilliantly edited polish script was novel and well received. Several new stars have been launched and the audience in an opening night were appreciative with rounds of applause and whistles etc The hall itself could use some needed revamping as usual noted many old patchy doors that have prevailed many years. It still was awe I souring and although the votives have risen a special night there is the ultimate nyc experience .Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 February 2024
- PaigeSouthold, New York64 contributionsWow!A life long New Yorker this was my first opera, I saw Puccini's Turandot and wow. The energy of the Met was palpable, the architecture of the building was stunning. What an amazing experience. Cannot recommend enough.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 April 2024
- AR-BRAYLittle Rock, Arkansas608 contributionsBeautifulWe had a wonderful time at the opera. There are drinks for purchase when you walk in. But you must finish them before you go into the auditorium area. The box seats are a little bit confusing to find and once you get there they are very small. Aside from that though they are relatively comfortable. The theater is beautiful. All of the musicians did a wonderful job.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 31 May 2024
- carpediem2019New York City, New York104 contributionsBest mise-en-scène and quintessential New York experienceImpressive mise-en-scène, artistic cast and innovating program. I have followed the Met Opera since 2004 and have seen its evolution in a 20-year span. The theater is magnificent and the incorporation of contemporary opera under Yannick's vision has been superb. For those who cannot attend yet, I highly recommend the Met HD recordings - they do get all the possible close-ups you may miss, even from the Grand Tier and Parterre seats. Pro tip: log on for rush tickets for last minute spots in the Orchestra.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 12 September 2024
- Claire S36 contributionsTimeless story tellingAn art form so magnificent that it stirs your sole. This is my third season of enjoying the opera. I am so fortunate to live in Philadelphia, just 2 and half hours from the city. The opera is not out of reach financial. Cost of good seats anywhere from $40 to $400. Yes I pick up the family circle seats. Enjoy two days in the city. With food, hotel, and the performance it is still less then Taylor Swift tickets.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 September 2024

I've never been to The Met in person but have seen most of the last few seasons through "Live From the Met " at a local theater. Shows are always amazing!
I'm writing this as a big THANK YOU for sharing all of those shows with your free daily stream online! My wife and I are seniors and trying to be careful so it has been wonderful to know that it's there and available. Most all of the other outlets that had provided free content early in the Pandemic have stopped or gone to a pay per view format.
So, Thanks Again!!

This was my first visit to the Met. I attended three operas over a long weekend: Eurydice, The Magic Flute, and Cinderella. Even if you don't like opera, I recommend attending an opera here because being inside the Met is an experience in and of itself. In addition, I felt reassured that staff check vaccine status and require masks. For the most part, I had an easy time navigating the space even though I have a visual impairment. The stairs all have rails and are low rising, and I had no problem getting around inside the theater, since there are short rails between rows in the aisles. The bar and dining room are are very elegant and still in operation (I really enjoyed listening to the Champaign corks popping). I am not all that familiar with opera and was surprised at how much I enjoyed Eurydice. The story was touching, the music was beautiful, and at other times, I forgot I was listening to music and felt as if I were listening to conversation. I guess this is standard these days but they have subtitles facing each seat, which was very helpful.

Life affirming treat for the senses and the heart, even during the dark days of Covid with management wisely insisting on masks and vaccination cards when we attended the tragic, yet beautiful La Boheme. This was Conductor Eun Sun Kim's debut with the Opera, so it was an added thrill to see her in action. While pricey, seeing all those actors and extras, and live musicians working more than justified the cost. Many thanks!

We saw La Boheme at the Metropolitan Opera. The performance was excellent, however, I can't say the same for Lincoln Center. I had tried to purchase orchestra tickets, but could not get any that were as close as we wanted, so I purchased tickets in the Panterre. It was suppose to be the second box, but they called and asked if they could move us to another box - probably the 4th or 5th one from the stage. They packed 8 people into a space that should not have accommodated more than 6 at the most. We had to sit sideways, as there was NO leg room. And, we paid a significant amount for those seats! Would I go back? Of course, as it is the Met Opera in NY, however, I would be far more selective for seats. I was very disappointed. Buyer beware.

This is the best opera company in the world, and I have been to many others all over the world. The principal singers, the chorus, the staging. Wow. Saw Handel's Agrippina, completely stunning; and De Vliegende Hollander, one of Wagner's earlier works. Only downside (which I read in a review of the NYT so I was prepared for it) was the singers were often upstage and they were sometimes hard to hear, after all, they had to compete with a big ship in the foreground. Also a wee bit disappointed that Bryn Terfel couldn't appear (broken ankle in last opera). Looking forward to theaters and Broadway being open again. We were in town a week before the Corona Virus struck. Thanks for live streaming opera!

We had great orchestra seats for Cosi Fan Tutte and we loved the entire experience. Of course the music, and the great conductor and orchestra really brought that alive. All the singers were in great voice and also were all great actors, which really brought another dimension to the piece. Sets and costumes were fun, with the 1950's carnival theme. I don't think I'll ever see or hear a better reading of legalize either (no spoilers here; see the show).

I really love this opera house. I saw few productions: Il Trovatore, Rigoletto, La Boheme, Pagliaci, Eugen Onegin, Don Giovanni, La Traviata... these productions are nice, as to the set design and costumes. Singers were always the top of the pops, and the whole opera house is just really very nice and welcoming. I never miss the visit when in New York, and I never regretted. For me, this is the best opera house of the world.

I had not been to the MET opera in several years, but decided to buy a season subscription to get back to life after Covid. The quality of their productions is almost always a given, but I was amazed at how well they continue to maintain the interior. The night I was there, excitement hung in the air as they presented the first opera by a Black composer, a long overdue milestone. If you decide to go, be sure you have proof of your Covid vaccination and a photo ID or you will not be admitted per NYC rules.

Welcome Back Opera Staff.
My wife and I went to see Madama Butterfly for her birthday gift. I was able to find parking at location under the building for $19.00. That alone is a great find. A short walk to the elevator, then street level, and to the Opera building. We were checked outside for tickets, proof of vaccinations, and identification. Once entering the building, masks must be worn throughout attendance. The opera was spectacular. The actors, and actresses showed off their great voices and acting, the costumes were colorful, the sets for fantastic, and the orchestra did an amazing job. The translator in front of the seat worked well such that one can follow the speech of the play. It was nice to see people dress up for this special evening. It was a wonderful show, and a wonderful evening.

There is a reason the Metropolitan Opera is respected as one of our country’s leading cultural institutions. I returned to the Met after a hiatus of many years and have enjoyed listening to four operas so far this season. The interior design of the Met is stunning, never ceasing to impress me. In fact, the opera house is as much a part of the experience as the performers. Even if this is not your cup of tea, choose an opera (Puccini usually works best for a first timer), then try to appreciate the music while you absorb the elegant surroundings. A truly sophisticated New York experience.

Has anyone eaten at the Grand Tier restaurant? We are going to La Traviata on 5 th March and thought it would be nice to eat there beforehand. The prix fixe menu looks very expensive but the setting looks very elegant. Wonder if we should splash out. Any tips would be gratefully received.

More thoughts for you.
1. The Grand Tier is coat and tie, upscale. The food is good, so an option. We have eaten there and Fiorello's (great pizza, too) frequently when we go.
2. We just went to see Agrippina at the opening, Feb 6. It was spectacular with two counter-tenors and a trouser-role Nero. Acting superb. Sets great. DiDonato wonderful: owns the stage. If you are nearby, think about it.
3. One place we frequently go to eat in NY is The Simone on East 82nd. Small, cozy, neighborhood place with great food and a good wine list. Consider the Austrian red. Coat and tie usually. No bar but good cocktails, too.
Enjoy yourselves...

Honestly if this is your first time to the Met and you are visiting from abroad, treat yourself to Orchestra in the Main section. That is the best view. If you have a budget, go to the second tier where the seats are between $35-$50 and the view is excellent. It all depends on what view you want and how much you want to pay.
If this is your first time to New York City, avoid the box seats off to the side. You can't see anything and they are not worth the money.

Hi -- We want to take our 11-yr-old granddaughter to the Met this season to see The Magic Flute. Advice on seating would be appreciated.
Grand Tier: There are some Row A seats, but a little toward the side. Is visibility for stage ok? There are some Row C, center seats; is it sloped enough that someone in front of her would not be a problem?
Parterre: There are some front row seat (slightly to edge). Is it worth paying the price?
Thanks much!
Written 24 June 2019
Generally, row A in the Grand Tier should be excellent; however, your granddaughter's height may be an issue. I think there is a safety bar in front of all the seats in Row A that might affect her view. Call the box office and ask about the height of the bar.

Does anyone know how long tonight’s Andrea Bocelli concert is expected to be?
Written 17 February 2019
The last concert I went for Andrea Bocelli was about 2 hours. It was nice.

In January you can choose from Aida, Adriana Lecouvreur, Carmen, Otello, and Pelleas and Melisande. Lowest price seats are only$25, but you can buy rear orchestra for about $85. Buy at the box office, on-line, or by phone,

Suggestions where to have dinner near Metropolitan opera house
Written 27 November 2018
Yes of course
One of my favorite place in NYC and best place before or after opera
Place name is barboulud
This place is front of the Lincoln center just cross the street.
If you can make a reservation, if you can’t make a reservation they have a round table at the back it’s so cute. You can sit there eat and drink
PS: Do not skip the dessert menu!!!!
I will love this place
Have a great time.
PS: if you like opera do not miss December 15th. That one is so special.

With regards to the backstage tour, do you also tour inside the theater? I would love to see the murals and an outside view from the balcony
