The Studio Museum in Harlem is a wonderful small museum focused on art created by African Americans. The space is roomy, you're not bumping into other viewers and the works are well lit. It's not a big museum but it's definitely worth seeing. And, while you are in the neighborhood, you can check out the world-famous Apollo Theater which is close by the museum and dine at the Red Rooster or Chez Lucienne. Both restaurants are within a 2 minute walk from the museum. Makes for a very pleasant afternoon. There's no admission charge on Sunday's thanks to Target Stores.

Go in Sunday for FREE. It is also FREE information center not only for HARLEM but for all New York. Go inside anytime and ask. Information center and shop is always for FREE.

I enjoyed the exhibit although it is small. It focused on african and spanish art in various media formats. I enjoyed... because it gave me a sense of NYC hip hop culture, 80s...and was thought provoking on various topics. The gift shop is an area that can be improved. They did not have some of the key exhibitors latest works (books) available. I highly recommend if you are the area... nominal fee/ donation accepted and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

I went to the Studio Museum in Harlem for the first time and I really enjoyed it. The shows were not like the shows at the bigger museums that can be endless and after a while overwhelming.
The museum in Harlem mounts very nice retrospects featuring up and coming artists or artists whose reputation is out there but not known well to the general public. The current Shabazz exhibit of photos I really enjoyed about Harlem street life on 125th Street. They also sponsor 'street art' in the parks uptown which I have seen in Marcus Garvey Park and a few others.
Well worth the trip but the hours are a little sporadic. Nice gift shop.

The Studio Museum in Harlem delights in destroying stereotypes. The current exhibit called "Black Cowboys" did that for me.
I was astonished to learn that 25% of the cowboys in the West after the Civil War were black, part of the great majority of cowboys that came from the South after that war.
The photos were collected and arranged by Amanda Hunt, the curator of “Black Cowboy,” who calls it a “small-scale revisionist art history.” The exhibit highlights the ways in which black communities today are celebrating and reclaiming their frontier history, and includes shots of black riders engaging in many aspects of the equestrian arts.
I try to stop by this fine museum every two or three months. There is always something to learn, and 125th Street is constantly fascinating to me.

It's FREE on Sunday, thanks to Target store! Just saw the Black Cowboy exhibit. It alone was worth the trip.

This museum is a little gem to be found in the heart of Harlem. They have changing exhibitions and a (rather small) permanent collection. It's small but well-selected.
A great advantage of this museum is that it is not crowded like many other NYC art museums (so you can really enjoy the art) and has long opening hours (on some days till 9 pm).

Maybe I had high expectations about this museum so I felt so down when I visited. I was expecting something that would represent the history of art or just art in the black community or even Harlem but nope. It is very small and it is something that a neighborhood would put together. It does not have the level a NYC museum would have. I read about its outdoor area and when I saw it I was more disappointed. There were a few of chairs and the "outdoor area" was the side of the building surrounded by the neighboring buildings. They have a "suggested ticket" price of $7 but the place is worth maybe $2.

Not a real Harlem history museum
I actually expect more real Harlam or Black culture in this museum. But in fact, this is another art gallery, I mean, I am not saying against the art.
But in fact, when the tourist come to here, they are expected more African American or Black culture, but is not, the museum show a lot art even not from New York, it is from LA? I think it is not very fall to my expectation.
