Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

For those of you that don't know, these buildings are the ones shown on the cover of the Led Zeppelin album Physical Graffiti... So it's a must for all rock fans to see a piece of rock history.

OK, I don't think you can honestly speak about the East Village being a bohemian neighborhood anymore - it's more like a Hallmark Card version of bohemia, or whatever you would consider to be a very expensive Hallmark Card... but, anyway, St. Mark's Place is the fulcrum, the center of the East Village and the pathway into an experience of the East Village.
At the west end of St. Mark's Place is Cooper Square, with the Cooper Union, where Abraham Lincoln made the speech that propelled him to the Republican Party nomination and the Presidency. At the east end of the street is Tompkins Square Park, a place that for a long time represented, depending on who you were talking to, either the creative soul of the neighborhood or the most dangerous elements of anarchic unrest remaining on the island of Manhattan. Now even Tompkins Square has been sanitized so thoroughly that the most doe-eyed scion of a Midwestern family or an Ivy League-trained lawyer will feel completely safe and at home there, imagining themselves to be the true descendants of the characters in John Larsen's "Rent."
OK, speechifying aside, I love St. Mark's Place, and always have for as long as I have lived in New York City. It's different than it was for sure, but still has many of the characteristics that made it such a fun street to walk up and down in the old days: great food, much of it quite affordable, unusual shops like the Sock Man, vestiges of the old granola days like a vegan bakery a stone's-throw from Tompkins Square, and just really fun character, good energy.
I don't spend as much time there and near there as I would like, but I love being there. I don't feel like I need a certain reason to go there, or need to do anything in particular.

St. Marks is one of the funkiest neighborhoods in NYC. A short walk from Greenwich Village or take the subway to Astor Place. Great local pubs and restaurants and funky shops. Lots of locals - not at all touristy like Times Square. Get off the beaten path and check out his East Village neighborhood!

So much history, art and culture to experience in this area. We found out a lot about the area and St Marks Place from the Lower East Side History Project walks that they do in the area - very educational. The history of the area in the Kleindeutschland period is fascinating, then leading through so many changes through the Beatnik poets, the hippies, the Punks - so much creativity in this small area throughout history and popular culture. There is also some significant buildings in the area - Cooper Union for example. The area is still slightly gritty but nothing compared to what it used to be - very much being corporatized but you can still sense a little bit of the old character of the area.

As a native NYer there are few areas I have not either worked in or explored. I have been to St. Mark's Pl. at every stage of my life, yet even now as a grandma I absolutely loved it once again. It's just a few blocks from the #6 (Lexington Ave. line) with fabulous buildings to look at along the way.
As everything changes with time, so have the shops but the overall feel of the street still lives on. There were the usual shops that sold different smoking devices (not a good idea to bring your kids). My son ended up was at Vape, the new trend in electronic smoking for those trying to quit. The place, although "vapory" was quite busy and the staff were friendly and meticulous in instructing the rather eclectic assemblage of people how to set up, work and maintain the equipment.
Tattoo parlors/piercing places are more common than potholes and the comic stores, novelty shops, African shop and new age businesses that sell crystals, incense and jewelry were all very unique, the vendors were all extremely friendly and are open to bartering. There is even a Chipotle Restaurant there that allows the public to use the restroom. That was a major plus since it's very hard in NY to find clean, decent public restrooms.
Some things remain, such as Famous Ray's pizza, one of the best in the city and the always probable filming of a TV show was going on, adding to the whole vibe. If you feel a need to be around some lovely, historic buildings, unique shops, be in the middle of a city yet feel as if you are in a quaint village, this is the place to go. r, you can get your nose pierced or a tattoo...or both...and not have to look very far or wait too long. This is NOT a place for "squares" if you know what I mean.

Found myself quite attracted to the multitude of restaurants, bars & vintage shopping found all along the street. Maybe not as jaded as other travellers/commentators but I truly enjoyed walking around the street daily as I head back to my rented room just 5 mins away ...

We visited Gothic Rensissance in St Mark's. A shop for those people who like to dress a little differently. They had everything from clothing to footwear to rings and headwear with a halloween speciality shop next door. Worth while taking a look!

Our apartment was around the corner form this street we spent our days, nights here.
Great bars, cafes, restaurants. From japanese, morrocon eggs, vietnamese baguettes transformed into cool hangouts for locals - cocktail lounges/bars at night. During the day there are skaters inhabiting the street - at night writers, hipsters love this place. Check it out day and night.

I am a frequent visitor to St Marks Place. There are a number of stores and restaurants that my family really likes here. It is no longer the scene of counter culture and progressive thinking it once was, but still worth a look. I would encourage visitors to learn about the history of this street and nearby blocks. It is filled with stories. Abraham Lincoln gave a stirring speech at the Cooper Union Great Hall; President Obama has given two there. This street was a central location for the rise of the "Pop" art movement. Some of the first happenings and be-ins were here. This was one of Andy Warhol's and his crowd's playgrounds. Punk rock came later and was central to the area along with cool nightclubs and bars. Then, Keith Haring . Several famous album covers from rock bands were shot here. W H Auden, Lenin, Abbie Hoffman, and many others lived on these blocks at times during their lives. Many choices for food here and small eclectic shops to browse in.

I only saw one chain (Chipoltle) amongst all of the local stores, eateries and attractions. There is still a hint of the rebel atmosphere that you think of with the East Village, but alas, you can see that this place too is becoming a high-rent neighborhood that will soon have Starbucks on every corner. But for now, it is still unique, quirky and very much worth strolling through.

Slds!

Hello,
I made a reservation for 8 night (21rst- 29th april).
I read here (in an other question) that they are building a new hotel a door or tow west of Homewood Suites. Do you think the construction will be finished before April ? I'm afraid of noise !
