The area

Neighbourhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

90% of the nation's diamonds will find their way through NYC, or so the tour guides will tell you. This district is full of retailers and wholesalers and diamond experts and crafters. If you just want to browse, then the street level storefronts are fun. However, if you plan to make a purchase, especially one of significance, then do your research. If you know anyone in the industry, seek their advice before you go. There are deals to be made here, but as usual, you got ta find them.

I toured through this well-known area this past weekend while in NY City for a wedding. There were a good number of diamond & jewelry stores in this "district," which really only stretches for one block on 47th street. I was surprised to find that the store I had come to visit was closed on that Saturday. When I asked another jeweler, he said "of course they are closed...it's Saturday and they are Jewish." Their website should say that, but it didn't. A few other stores were closed as well, while a couple others just didn't give me the feel of being a reputable dealer. I did find one store, however, which offered what I wanted, so I did make a purchase. But I would not be ready and willing to label this as the "end-all of jewelry districts," as it was not. Still, it is an interesting place to stroll down if in the area, just to take a look.

It is quite an experience to walk down both sides of the street and see all of the window displays of gems. I originally went for the purpose of trying to sell a bracelet, but end up not doing so. I went into two places that in particular caught my eye to price out resetting my diamond earrings. I got prices and timing as we were only there for a short stay. Went back and looked for reviews on Deena Jewelers. They were all positive. Also they told me they could have the setter set the stones while I watched. The salesperson I dealt with at Deena's was very helpful and accommodating. Her name is Tatiana.

Great for wandering but ground level shops are mostly rip-offs. Nice people but don't wander in just to buy, unless you're a turkey and want to be served up with fries! But I knew some businesses behind and bought there. Especially Diamonds by Lauren, at 40 W47 (go inside and see board - they're on 9th floor, number 911).

If you are a lover of jewelry, this is a MUST see. If you like to window shop or if you are seriously in the market to purchase a diamond this is a definite must. Go educated and with a budget. The shop owners can be a little aggressive but they are nice and will answer questions even if you are not purchasing. We talked to a shop owner who had $250,000 earrings in his storefront. Very interesting and very beautiful jewelry.

Totally overrated and over priced. Most of the Diamonds are sourced from South Africa, and it is at least 30 - 40 % cheaper to purchase the highest quality Gemstones through Internationally certified and known Diamond dealers in South Africa.

At the retail / street level mostly everything is overpriced. However, booking a tour of the Diamond District will give you access to the same wholesalers that deal with internationally certified quality gemstones at wholesale prices. It;s all about who you know in the NYC Diamond District.

We were here the other day. Its nothing special. This area is very over rated. Yes there are a lot of jewelers here, but you wont find any bargains here. Their prices were high. Speaking from past experience, avoid the stores here and stop at a good local jeweler. You will get better prices and better service.

We travelled from Dublin to buy our wedding and engagement rings. The gems are of such a superior quality and there is so much choice.
Roman Malakov's is where we always go. Boris has looked after us for years and every time we return to NYC he cleans our rings for us for free.
He is my jeweller of choice

The portion of 47th Street between Fifth & Sixth Avenue is a paradise for Diamond lovers: 80 percent of the diamonds that enter the country are handled here. Deals are made with a handshake and the Yiddish words “mazel” and “brucha” (luck & blessings). Diamond dealers, hustlers, kibbitzers, refrigerator-sized store guards, security trucks and hand trucks, cameras and more cameras, it's a wild wold world of money and glitter! If you see something you like, don't be intimidated, get in and talk to them, a lot is negotiable. And keep your eyes open for a day-time robbery: they do happen from time to time, perhaps you'll get to live through a trill like this!

Hi,
I have just read your post regarding a visit you made to New York Diamond District...
I am at the moment doing some research on where is best to buy.
I notice you mentioned South Africa and as it happens I am visiting there for 2weeks from 25th Feb 2019..
I was wondering if you knew of any good jewellers in Cape town you would recommend..
Regards
Kathy
