Top ways to experience Empire State Building
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

- 394cjoMelbourne, Australia1 contributionOur favourite tourist attraction, but too busyWe all rated it our favourite thing we did in NYC but it is so busy that it's hard to get any nice photos or really enjoy the moment. They sell so many tickets that you can hardly move up the top.. They do a good job of keeping you entertained in the queue as you move through different exhibitions and information and there's an option to take 6 flights of stairs instead of waiting for an elevator to the top. It would be 5 stars if I was able to see and enjoy the view.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 26 December 2022
- Stephanie C2 contributionsFun experience with fast pass except for staffWe purchased the express lane to go all the way to the top. “All you have to do is follow the red carpet”. The trip up is confusing for the express lane as NO ONE is there to assist with the express lane. The workers are rude and on a power trip and even tried to bully me into the regular line. The first observation deck is just ok. The new one is amazing and the woman up on the very top was the only nice staff member. Think we will pick a different building next time. 12/17Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 26 December 2022
- Andrew R3 contributionsGreat, only one minor issueGreat experience. Very little waiting after making reservations in advance. Only issue: Have to pay extra to goo by elevator from floor 80 to floor 86. Ok for our adult children and young grandchildren to walk the 6 flights of stairs, but my wife and I (both seniors) chose to decline. Perhaps have elevator to 86 floor available for seniors at no extra chargeVisited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 27 December 2022
- molliejanssen1 contributionPricing out the average personYes, the view is beautiful and the information/displays on the way up are interesting to learn about but it was hard to get over the sticker shock. The base rate is expensive enough but then they charge extra to go to the highest level and charge extra to go at sunset. Guess that's about as America as you can get.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2022
- davidmnj3Robbinsville, New Jersey1 contributionInteresting and funGoing through the building there are many different museum-like areas where you can stop and learn interesting facts about the building. The Observatory itself has indoor and outdoor areas to stop and enjoy the views. Can easily spend hours here to take everything in. There was confusion on when you can actually enter the building based on your reservation time. Other than that the experience was worth it.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 31 December 2022
- ObliqueCaretakerBrighton, United Kingdom26 contributionsIconic experience if a little busy...Went with family of varying ages just after Christmas. Everyone enjoyed it overall and of course it's an epic view from the top. But.. Had visited a few years ago and it was a calm, pleasant experience. I'm not sure if it's just the way it is now or due to the time of year/day (probably both), but it was extremely busy. Security at JKF was nice compared to being barked at on entry here! Literally herded like cattle at a fast pace, barely any chance to take things in without being shouted at. Was hoping to be able to store a stroller, but unfortunately had to fight our way through everyone with it the whole time which was a bit of a chore. Once in it was better, time to look at all the new exhibits about the history, etc - making the ticket price more worthwhile. Attractions for the kids to look at history, the building, the workings, etc. Photo opportunity with King Kong, well is hand anyway! Up to the observation deck on the 86th floor and of course the amazing views. Although again it was painfully crowded, almost having to push your way for every step, and trying to keep track of 8 people (including kids) was almost impossible. Despite the moaning, it's definitely worth visiting and experiencing - set yourself a couple of hours aside to take it all in and be prepared if it's busy.Visited December 2022Written 4 January 2023
- NatA7 contributionsCould be more!Furst impressions not great. Disorganised queuing system and the most utterly rude ‘doorman’, speaking to customers so disrespectfully. Once in, experience to 80th floor was fine. The queue to get to the 86th was nearly an hour. I gave up and asked to be allowed to exit and was questioned why I didn’t want to go up to the higher floors. Do I really need to explain myself? I would have preferred to go to Summit One in all honesty. Customer service needs looking at!Visited December 2022Written 12 January 2023
- Alex T2 contributionsFun, enjoyable tour.A very memorable tour. The flow of the crowd is very well managed and the overall tour had a number of very interesting exhibits done with a very good presentation style. Of course there is also the view. Make sure to try and go on a clear day. The additional 102nd floor observatory cost extra but is worth a visit.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 January 2023
- Claude FOttawa, Canada127 contributionsA must seeYou have to go here to see the City views. But be prepared for long line ups, even if you have a booking time ... which you must have unless you want a very long wait. We went at night and the lights are super.Visited December 2022Written 15 January 2023
- billykerr731 contributionGreat visit, rude staffHad a great time and the building is amazing. Unfortunately several of the staff were very rude. Understandable that they deal with thousands of clueless tourists each day. We were on the 102nd floor ready to come down the elevator to the 86th. We pressed the button that said “please select floor” and were scolded by a staff member for touching the button. She claimed we would mess up the elevator and it would get stuck. No need to treat me like a schoolboy.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 January 2023

Must do this whilst in New York. You must book your slot to guarantee entry. The views are good but the building doesn't have much character. Definitely better views when the empire state building is in the view

Amazing views. You will have about a 20 to 30 minute wait for the elevators to go up and down. Stunning view of all of NY.

So sad to see. Went years ago and so glad I saw it then. The refurbishment has taken the heart and soul out of of this once beautiful art deco building. They mustn’t have listed buildings in the USA, the feeling of stepping back in time and all that history has completely gone. Very disappointed and sad😢

Booked tickets online, which was nice & easy, and that booking got us through the cordon in place after the Macy’s parade. Nice easy flow of visitors ushered through by the staff & the view feom the 86th floor was outstanding. If you go to New York make sure to visit this iconic building & learn about its history.

Picked a stunning day to go up the ESB. Clear views all the way around.
Only downside was the disproportionate high cost of going up the last section.

We visited the ESB for the Sunrise Experience offered through Starbucks Reserve. It is an incredible opportunity to visit the building when it is almost completely empty at dawn! Tickets are limited which makes it a much more intimate experience to watch the sunrise over a still-sleeping city. I estimate there were only 50 people in our group. We were treated like true VIPs and cannot say enough positive things about every single staff member we encountered. Everyone was welcoming, extremely friendly, and professional. Highly recommend this over any other type of visit. You also get access to the museum before it opens and encounter zero lines or crowds.

It’s expensive but there is no way to express the awe felt arriving at 102 floor at sunset. Lights are coming on and sun glows red over the Hudson.

Can I visit the 102nd floor, go to the 86th floor then return to the 102nd floor during the same visit?

I don't think so. There is always a person on the elevator that takes you to 102 and they check your ticket. If it has been already verified, as far as I know, you cannot use it again.

I have bought a City Pass and want to visit the ESB. City Pass states I need to book but it is unclear whether I have to get tickets and then queue up or whether my City Pass will negate the need to get tickets there. Anyone able to clarify for me please?

I'm sure it will be fine - they're really only interested to know a ticket has been purchased, not the name of the person handing it in. Hope she has a great time!

Hi. Someone can tell me why is not possible make a ticket reservation in web site after June ? I going to Manhattan in July , buying my go city pass months ago, trying a reservation to observatory but not possible . Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question, but I made reservations on Tuesday to visit on Wednesday, and all the time slots were still available. There will be more crowds in summer because school is out in the US for summer vacation, and that's when many families with children travel. I read that, to avoid the biggest crowds, visit on a weekday rather than a weekend, and go either early in the morning (it opens at 8:00 or 9:00 AM) or late at night (after 10:45 PM). We went at 9:00 AM, and there was no line. I recommend checking the website every day, and as soon as July reservations are available, make your reservation.
If you get the Express Pass, can you still see the exhibits on the way back down?
I believe that's with a regular pass.

Hi! I've purchased 2 tickets on the 16th of April for an entry on the 8th of May at 6pm for my mom and kid brother. I didn't realize the tickets would have the name of the credit card holder and not theirs, will this be a problem? Because then I read that the ticket is only valid for that name. Please help me, as I'm not going to be with them and they do not speak English, I just want for them to have a great experience without inconveniences. Thank you in advance!

Tickets are scanned as you enter the building. No one will check the name of the credit card holder.

For combo ticket (86th and 102nd), what's the rule?
do I follow this flow 2=>80=>86=>102=>exit or I have flexibility to alter the order?
also , is there a time limit for staying in each floor especially 102nd?
larhetz
Lenexa, KS14 contributions
I do not believe you can alter the flow. Take time to see the museum because you can’t go back after you leave 2.
