We visited this island with a Road Scholar group on a beautiful day. Unfortunately the lighthouse was closed for the season, but there are several very nice walking paths and a beautiful beach. It is accessible by auto(4 wheel drive) but the boat is a...More

Wish the lighthouse was open to walk up to the top and keeper's house. Nice boardwalk to walk around. The visitor's center and National Park Ranger were very nice. Beach was beautiful - white clean sand.

We drove down from New Bern to explore the area. Nice quite drive down once you get off of 70. Visitors Center had some nice displays and information along with a gift shop selling souvenirs and educational items. Didn't look at the prices though. I...More

The National Park Service does an outstanding job of maintaining the park grounds. The lighthouse is beautiful, but don't miss a 10-min walk across the island to the beach with sand the consistency of sugar! Lovely wildflowers and good educational signs explain the history of...More

I have visited the Cape Lookout Lighthouse many times. The ferry to the lighthouse is great. The Visitors Center is very nice and has a move about the area. This is a must see.

Beautiful. ...saw the wild horses on Shakleford Banks & went to the lighthouse on cape lookout! Well worth the trip. If you want to see the horses plan for minimum of 2 hours! Plan to take your time enjoying the beach! Highly recommended! !!

What a beautiful place and a nice beach...even got to see the wild horses on Shackleford island right across from lighthouse island. The shore line is plenty and not too busy for parking your boats and the waters and beaches were very clean. Bath house...More

Do not go if it is really windy, a lot of open area for sand to blow around. Great place to see nature untouched. Also see scenery you will not see anywhere else.. Plus the lighthouse is cool to see.

We're driving from Southern Illinois. I've never been to the Carolinas and my goal is really to get to the beach. So we just had our plans cancelled for an upcoming trip next weekend. We want to camp literally on the beach no strings, I guess some call it primitive. It looks like all the sites that your could reserve through the parks sites are all reserved. The only site that seems to even be an option is Cape Lookout. My only concern is the ferry. Does it run frequently? I'm worried about a possible medical emergency. Since I'm not familiar with the area I'm wondering where do we leave our car if we don't want to take it on the ferry? Also, once you arrive on the island, where does the ferry take you? I'm going to have an umbrella, towels, etc, things to carry by hand. Is it extremely far to walk before we can locate a reasonable beach site to camp on? I'd also appreciate any places of interest as far as trails, places to walk, sights to see, etc.

If there is a medical Emergency they will helicopter you out. Ferries run frequently but if you are taking your car you need reservations. Ferries stop in the afternoon. It's a 30 minute ride. It is going to be HOT out... More
