Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a nice spot filled with flags, water, flowers and history about Sgt Basilone and some of the WII soldiers that did not come home.
There was a lot of seating and would have been enjoyable if it wasn’t for the pan handlers who would ask every passerby for change.

John Basilone's brief life was snuffed out at age 28 when Japanese mortar shrapnel on Iwo Jima finally felled him. He performed such astounding acts of bravery and self-sacrifice as a machine-gun platoon leader that showed what heroes are made of; he destroyed Japanese assault positions nearly single-handedly and then rescued a trapped American tank that was mired in a landfield. All the while, bombs, machine guns, and artillary fire were whizzing by.
Although he is not a native Californian, his latest stint of service was with the Marines and he was Italian so, he is honored by the community in Little Italy with this piazza. It was interesting to see how many people stopped and read his historical plaque and, hopefully, gained an appreciation for the price paid by this superman (and others who stories may never be known).
The piazza is a modest little affair with a bust of Basilone, info plaque, folding chairs, a world globe afloat in a fountain, all surrounded by a small raised wall and surrounded by an attractive stained concrete and brick foundtion for the piazza.
This is one of those must-see locations in Little Italy.

I like sitting within the Piazza and looking out toward North Island. The Basilone story is inspiring.

Took a walk up the hill from train station came across this nice memorial to Gunnery Sargent john Basilone, in Piazza Basilone while looking for the street market. It’s a clean well keep memorial, with lots of colour all around it I guess it must be part of the Little Italy area thing. Lots of restaurants near by selling pizza and cappuccino’s. We tried out the spacious rooftop patio of Born and raised, nice view of the Piazza, had cocktails and watched the sun go down.
TIP: There are lots of smaller less expensive eaters close by.

Very nice area to stop and pay respect to the Italian soldiers that did not return. Basilone was an honored soldier many times over.

Happened upon this by accident. Had dinner at restaurant right next to it. Was great spot to sit and wait for our friends. Busy area. Nice little dedication monument to MOH awardee Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone.

His story is inspiring and featured in the series "the Pacific" well worth a watch. Grab a coffee at one of the great shops like cafe Italia and then go down 1/2 a block and learn about the heroics of Gsgt. John Basilone/
