This free museum was one of my favorite sites in Balboa park. For a small museum, they have a pretty significant collection (including a couple of well known Dutch masters).

The Timken Museum is a jewel box at the heart of Balboa Park. With its modern box architecture thw timken stands out and belies its interior that houses an excellent collection of Russian icons as well as some strong European and American 19th century paintings....More

The collection is small but interesting. The paintings are organized by country of origin - French, Italian, Spanish, etc. No modern art here - the works are from the 1300s through the 1800s. This museum is free, so it's a good way to see some...More

Only free admission museum in Balboa park. Suggested donation 5.00 and is so worth it. If you want to start your kids in the world of humanities. Small museum, easy to peruse with kids and start the layering effects to promote art appreciation without being...More

Outside of the museum looks nice. Inside, there's a very limited collection. If you are not interested in scenes of war brutality or Russian icons or Jesus/the Virgin Mary, you will find little to enjoy. Yes, there are some famous artists and a few good...More

Next to the giant SD Museum of Art, the Timken makes up in quality for what it lacks in size. Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck are just a few of the masters represented.

Timken houses a significant amount of European, American, and Russian paintings, and a Rembrandt. And, best of all ... it's "Free" admission. I believe it's closed on Mondays, so check the hours before you go. Hope this helps you.

This museum is located in Balboa Park. There are six big rooms with mostly paintings and there are many artists that you have heard of including a Rembrandt. The museum is free but we paid for ear set ($4.00) that gave us more information about...More

Considered one of the finest small art museums in the world, it did not disappoint us. It is exquisite what is on display, spanning 700 years. I had traveled a great distance to see Rembrandt van Rijn' Saint Bartholomew.
