A must see if you are in Balboa Park. We have visited many times in the past. The layouts are phenomenal, the work that goes into creating the representation of the SW California railroading is great. The trestles, mountains, canyons, cities all come to life. For the younger crowd there is steps, that one can stand on and be able... More

We had a family outing at this museum. Everyone from Grandpa to grandchildren enjoyed seeing the rooms of active model trains rambling through the model villages and towns.

I'm not even into model railroads, yet this was pretty amazing. It's a setup of 1959, and includes city and country displays. There is a gentleman that will tell you all about it, and you find yourself enthralled. My only regret is that I didn't have children there to share the experience. It's quick, and donations are requested. Take the... More

This museum has been around for a very long time. Meticulous work goes into making the trains and tracks look realistic. The volunteers who work at the museum are extremely dedicated and love trains.

I wouldn't classify it as a museum but nonetheless well worth a visit if you or your kids are into trains. Located downstairs of the photo museum, it's not the most obvious to find, but a nice treasure if you do. Numerous huge layouts behind glass/plastic screens; not too much interactivity, but plenty of eye candy. Check outside as well... More

We loved the railroad museum. My son and I got to go "behind the scenes" because he helped hold a window open for someone. All the people were very friendly and willing to spend time with us. I loved all the detail that was put into this.

This is a fun museum! An amazing set up of all things trains! There are interactive displays and many examples of creative settings for model trains. Fun for the whole family! I especially loved the outdoor garden set ups!

This was the only one of the museums in Balboa park we added to our Go San Diego card and I'm so glad we did. I'll admit I'm the only one in the family who likes model railroads but even our hard to please teenagers were amazed by this place. The length of the layouts is amazing there had to... More

Always something new here. Lots of historical recreations and modern renditions. See the old Trellis out in Ocatilla Wells area in N Scale.
