- cohomanSammamish, Washington2,395 contributionsGreat ViewsMy family spent 2 hours here checking out the lighthouse and walking the different trails in the park. The day we arrived, the visitor center was under refurbishment but they still had a makeshift store open to sell souvenirs. I liked the fact the lighthouse is open and you can checkout both floors and see the restored rooms (although the top floor with the light was closed). From the bayside trail, you get a good view of North Island (military base) and the San Diego skyline. You can also drive down to the tide pools which was a great photo op. Definitely worth a visit on a warm sunny day.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 December 2023
- AnnaThornNewquay, United Kingdom153 contributionsBeautiful place to visitBeautiful place. Well worth a visit. $20 for a car to enter but you can visit for a week on that ticket. This place offers stunning views of the bay. We also walked the trail path which had lots of boards up with nice info about the area.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 December 2023
- Claire KHove, United Kingdom1,960 contributionsDay 3 of the Californian AdventureIf you have the time, this monument is definitely worth a visit. Not only is it very moving passing the thousands of war graves on the drive up there, but the views when you reach the top are breathtaking. Seeing Downtown San Diego, the mountains that surround & Mexico in the distance, was just incredible.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 February 2024
- Carrie D.Cleveland, Ohio2,394 contributionsBeautiful National MonumentWhat a beautiful National Monument! We enjoyed the film on the migration patterns of the gray whales. We walked up to see the lighthouse and the views from up there, which were as lovely as we expected. We loved the coastal trail and the tide pools. Cabrillo was an absolutely gorgeous place to spend a few hours in the morning—we’re just a little bummed that in the few hours we were there we didn’t spot any gray whales off the coast as we’d hoped.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 March 2024
- Jane LEvanston, Illinois275 contributionsInteresting History, Stunning Views and TidepoolsThis small unit of the National Park Service packs a punch! There are beautiful views, hiking trails, tidepools to explore and interesting history. We spent much more time here than we had planned, thinking it was just a small monument to Castillo. The NPS has done of nice job of incorporating information about the impact of European exploration on Native Americans in the area. Highly recommended.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 March 2024
- AJStMinnesota57 contributionsHistory and hikingThis is a great place to visit when in San Diego. Allow a minimum of 2 hours. There is a $20 entrance fee. The views are great from the visitor center and from the light house. Great information on the history of the area. Must do the hike to the lighthouse and do the drive to the tide pools. Be sure to bring your own water and snacks. Water fountain out of order on day of our visit. Perfect family activity on a sunny day.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 March 2024
- Clarence And GSan Diego, California458 contributionsBEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL VIEWS!!!We visited the Cabrillo National Monument this weekend, and it was beautiful. It was a brilliant day. We're members, and we were visiting on our last month of our membership, April 2024. After we passed through the gate, we drove down to the lower level. BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL VIEWS!!! We love to see the sea lions and pelicans, and hear the crashing of the waves. We then drove up to the top, to the what you would call the Visitors Center. We went to the lookout, then the Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo Statue. After that, we split up. Gonzalo headed up to the Cabrillo Lighthouse, and I headed to the theater for the film. It was all about the discovery of San Diego by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and his crew. It was another brilliant day at the Cabrillo National Monument.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2024
- worktotravel14Trenton, New Jersey3,725 contributionsGo for the views, stay for the trailsTravel through a military base to learn about this monument. Depending on the time you have, you can do a shorter visit which allows you to take in expansive views of lower Sand Diego, view Mexico on a clear day and take in plane landings at the military base. With more time visit the Old Point Loma lighthouse and walk trails that allow you to see amazing vistas. Finally with a car, visit the lower part of Cabrillo National Monument and visit Old Point Loma station. Unfortunately, we did not have a car nor time to do this and the Monument has a strict close, but we loved our visit there. The visitors center was closed at the time.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 27 May 2024
- Generals36Atlanta, Georgia277 contributionsGreat viewsWhile unfortunately the military museum and lighthouse were closed for renovations at the time of our visit, we were able to stop by the visitor center and walk out along the area behind the center for incredible views of San Diego and the Pacific Ocean. We were able to use our America the Beautiful annual park pass, and we didn’t have to pay the $20 entrance fee; however, if you don’t have the pass, you may want to check to see whether the lighthouse and museum are open before accessing the park, unless you have plans to hike or otherwise explore the park in greater detail than just visiting for the views. Similar views can be found at other points (Point Loma).Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 June 2024

Although it can get very busy on weekend and holiday periods, this is great stop to see the best views of the city and learn the early history of the area. Be sure to run up to the lighthouse and see how a family used to run and see their living area. On a clear day run your eyes south down the coast and you can spot Tijuana, Mexico. Trails lead down to the coast if you want to hike a bit. Parking is easy and close by. If you have a national parks pass you can use it for free entry, otherwise it's currently $20 for a car.

Definitely a must if you are visiting San Diego. On a sunny day, the views are just spectacular. Entrance into the park now costs $35 per carload (unless you have a senior federal park pass), but then everything else is free. There is a gift shop. There are several hikes down to the water (and straight up on the return), but even without doing the hikes, there is enough walking (or as little as you want) here. The old lighthouse is interesting...you can see most of the interior. If you don't have a car, Lyft can take you there, or a bus. We took Lyft there from the downtown area, then caught a bus to a place we could walk to sunset cliffs for the sunset, then caught another bus back to our room. Bus costs $2.50 for one ride ($1.25 for seniors) or $3.00 for all day, I think. Anyways, this is a very worthwhile place to visit.

We didn't visit the Monument until late afternoon after most of the fog had lifted. There is an admission fee for the park but is not necessary if you have a National Parks pass. Be patient, there was a long line of cars entering the park. The panoramic views of the harbor, naval air station and the cemetery are marvelous. There is a lot to learn in the museum about the explorer Cabrillo and some local history. There are two lighthouses if I recall right and there is a statue of the explorer. We also visited the tide pools which were very interesting. We weren't dressed for going in the water however and they closed at 4:30 the day we visited. Point Loma is definitely a must see when visiting San Diego.

We visited this beautiful national monument on a perfect spring day. The bay view hike was well worth it as was the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The visitor’s center was very nice and we enjoyed the statue of Cabrillo as well.

Not just the Monument and lighthouse but also the coastal area park and Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery nearby so take some time to explore the whole area while you're here. On the west side of the point is a nice and easy walk along the coastline and the Point Loma tide pools. The history of the monument is interesting and gives you some background to the beginnings of San Diego. The lighthouse is cool and also has some great history and stories to read over. On top of the hill and on the east side of the point are some great views of the city, the bay and Coronado with the naval base. It is a national monument and park so there is an entrance fee for a vehicle but if you take some time to explore everything, it is well worth the amount.

For sure this is something to do on a clear sunny day, as the views are incredible. The cost to enter of $20 for your vehicle are well worth it, but if you are a senior with a lifetime pass, it is free and all the better. Not the easiest place to get to as you must find your way to Point Loma and then drive to the top of the hill through neighborhoods, but once there, it is nice to walk around and take in the views. A great place to take lunch with you and spend some time relaxing away from the bustle of the city. We have been a number of times and always enjoy enjoy it. Take a jacket, as it is usually breezy up there and avoid weekday commute times, because the Navy has numerous facilities in the area.

We came here from LA because - due to 'the Virus' everything in LA was closed. So looking to fill in a day before we flew out of LAX I picked the Cabrillo Nat Monument for a visit for 2 reasons.
1. I'm a Clive Cussler fan and those who are also know the name very well.
2. We have sailed in and out of San Pedro a few times and along the front of the cruise terminal the history of San Pedro is displayed via plaques inlaid in the sidewalk.
Juan Cabrillo features prominently in that history timeline.
So down we came and we are very glad we did.
Inside the visitors center you can walk around and learn all about this amazing mans input into the history of southern California.
As an added bonus you have great views of both the coastline and bay, and a lovely old historic lighthouse.
If you are really lucky - like we were you may also be fortunate enough to see the worlds oldest active sailing ship - The Star of India sailing out and passing in front of the USS Essex (2) as it steam into the harbor.

This National Park was a little bit of a drive to reach but we were rewarded with great views of San Diego in addition to its historical significance.
The National Park Service managed the park and charged $20 per car admission. Walk or bike ins were $10 per person.
There was lots of parking at the lighthouse, visitor center and down at the tide pools.
The weather was bright and Sunny so we had great views of the Pacific Ocean (from the lighthouse) as well as San Diego city ( from the Cabrillo monument or back of the visitor center).
The visitor center had a small exhibit on the Spanish arrival and Cabrillo expedition as well as a short movie. Bathrooms here were clean.
There were a few hiking trails but it seemed most people stuck to the main attractions.

This is a great place to visit! Arrive early as it gets very crowded by 1pm. Right on the ocean, beautiful views. Coin op telescopes are available to better take in the view. On the day I was visiting, people were looking for gray whales who migrate past Cabrillo on their way to and from Baja California. There are several trails near the visitor center and the lighthouse is a short walk away from the main parking lot. Beautiful tidepools are a short drive away from the visitor center. The fee is $20/car. Entrance is free if you have a Parks Pass. The annual pass is $80/person. A lifetime pass is available for $80 for people over 62. A fabulous deal! The pass is good at any National Park site that charges admission. Highly recommend! Cabrillo National Monument is a perfect way to spend the day. Ranger led tours are available at no charge.

I was in San Diego 2 and half years ago. I came with my husband today and I was pretty excited to show him the lighthouse, the monument and the view. I don’t remember having to pay $10 a person to get in (2 of us $20) and if you want to get in with the car is $20....I think that the price is pretty expensive counting that you don’t have a travel guide and mostly are trails that you can walk ( I don’t think it’s fare for them to make you pay to walk on nice trails)...I would give more stars because the view, but because you have to pay so much for visiting an open space I give it a star. Not worth it the price for what there is to visit. The picture you see here are from 2016/2017

Are you allowed to hold a sign up for departing Naval ships? I don’t want to break any rules or get my sailor in trouble - but I’d love to hold one up as the ship passes by. Thanks.

Outdoor areas are open but there are no picnic areas specifically. There’s plenty of outdoor space if you bring your own chairs, etc so you should be able to find somewhere that works for a picnic.

Yes , I think so, but recommend calling Park directly to confirm (or check their website). I didn't notice any pets while there, but wasn't really paying attention to that given the scenic beauty.
