What a fun place to explore

You can only get there by boat. Bring lunch, hike the island, enjoy the views. Please note what ever you bring over, you must bring back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our half day trip to Spectacle Island - leaving on the 10:30 BHC ferry and returning at 3:30. On the outgoing trip a guide explained the sights in the Boston Harbor and talked about the interesting history of Spectacle Island - from garbage dump to picnic and hiking island. There are easy and interesting paths around the... More

We had no idea that there were so many islands to see in the Boston Harbor. The boat trip offered incredible views of the city. While on the island we were able to take a swim, hike all over the island and take in the amazing vantage points looking towards the city.

Great day trip…easy access and a fun ferry ride from Boston, great views nice hiking/walking trails and a great place to just hang out. Not an abundance of shade so if you’re subject to issues from the sun make sure you bring sunscreen and dress accordingly. There’s a refreshment stand on the island but it’s a good idea to bring... A really stunning place. Well kept paths a several places to picnic. Wish we had brought swimsuits since the beach is nice and there are changing rooms and outdoor fresh water showers. VisitOrson center is small but nice and sitting on the veranda is soothing and peaceful after a hike on the paths.

What a total blast we had! My teenagers and I took the BHC ferry to Spectacle Island. It was amazingly fun, gorgeous, and so much more than we expected. The 20 minute ferry ride to the Island was great; it was clean, the ride was smooth, and there was a fascinating history of Boston described along the way. Food and... More

The views are spectacular here and well worth a trip! The history was fascinating. Please bring watershoes, if you plant to swim. The beach is very rocky. It has outdoor changing cabanas and nice indoor bathrooms.

This is the closest of the Harbor Islands, just a quick 15-minute boat ride away, so it's great for a half day excursion. A short hike (a mile or so) up to the top of the drumlin yields wonderful views of Boston and the harbor. Great place for a picnic, but don't forget the bug spray -- there are tons... More

It was a long day under the hot sun so we took the trip to this island only because we wanted to hide from the heat. And even the whole way to the Spectacle island and back we were on the deck ( It was our choice, you can also seat inside the boat) it was a really refreshing and... More

I had wanted to hike on Spectacle Island simply for the ability to say that I had hiked on The Big Dig. The island used to be Boston's landfill and was "reclaimed" into a park using dirt from the excavation for The Big Dig's tunnel under the harbor. I didn't have much time at the island because we needed to... More

Staying in North End

Neighbourhood Profile
North End
Wandering around Boston’s North End can feel like being transported to Europe. Stroll down Hanover and Salem streets for the finest Italian restaurants, bakeries, cafes, and a few boutique shops. Take part in the big debate as to whether Modern Pastry or Mike’s serves a better cannoli. Before your food coma sets in, make sure to stop by historic Paul Revere’s home, and follow the Freedom Trail to Old North Church and Copp’s Hill Burying Ground. Take a rest in a cafe on Hanover street and observe the quirky, European character of the North End.
