A very rustic Boston Harbor island that you can get to from George’s Island. It is nice and quiet there for a change in scenery. Very relaxing.

I am conflicted on how to rate my stay at Lovell's Island. The rustic camping is great if you're into that kind of thing, and the scenery is amazing. I had a great time exploring the island during my two night stay. On the other hand, the island is about 100 yards from one of the main channels for boat traffic in the harbor, plus one of the runways from Logan Airport nearly lines up with the island and large planes taking off came roaring overhead with engines near full throttle deep into the night. At least a couple of times airplane lights lit up my tent, too. Let me start with the positive aspects of my trip. I made reservations in January for a two night camping trip in July. Through reserveamerica.com you can make reservations at any of the Boston Harbor Islands up to 6 months in advance, and if you want a weekend do it 6 months in advance. There was an $8 reservation fee when I made my reservation in January 2015. My plan the whole time was that I was going to kayak out to the island, which I did, making the two mile paddle from Hull's Pemberton Point. I was able to park my car in the dirt parking area right at the shore in Hull, literally 30 feet from the water. Note that there is a section in the dirt parking area that has a 2 hour limit. When I arrived at the island I beached my kayak right near the main dock and walked up to the shelter where I was greeted by two rangers. I told them I had reservations to camp, and I had to initial a piece of paper that had my reservation printed on it. They told me to go to the camp site area and pick out a site I liked, which I did, then I hopped back in my kayak and paddled a minute or so up the beach to the boardwalk that was near my site. The boardwalk was made out of some type of plastic that was extremely slippery. I made two trips with my equipment and then one to carry my kayak to my camp site... maybe a minute walk from the beach to the site. And the site had more than enough space (as they all did). While small, the island has plenty of area to explore. I walked completely around the island on the beach a couple of times. Also, the island is home to an old military fort, Fort Standish, that is falling apart in some places, and is fun to explore. Plus there's a great view of the Boston skyline. Now, the negative part of this review.... the boat and airplane traffic. I camped here on a Friday and Saturday night. On Friday the airplane traffic seemed to disappear around 10:00, but I could feel the bass thump from a couple of party boats that slowly passed by. It was also karaoke night; I remember hearing Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and Walk The Moon's "Shut Up And Dance". The woman who sang "I Will Always Love You" was way better than the guy who sang "Shut Up And Dance". And the fact that I could pick out the better karaoke singer speaks to how well I could hear the party boat noise from my camp site. On Saturday night the airplane traffic kept me up. A large plane with engines roaring took off about every 20 minutes or so until midnight. One of the rangers told me that you get used to the airplane traffic, but apparently two nights was not enough time for me. The location of Lovell's Island is great and I would definitely visit again on a day trip, but staying overnight is way too loud if you're expecting a remote and quiet camping experience like I was. 5 stars for location and quality of the on-island staff. 1 star for a peaceful place to sleep while camping.
