The area

Neighbourhood: Downtown
The largest area of the city, Downtown is rich with historical and iconic sites in Boston. Stroll through one of Boston’s most famous green spaces, the Boston Public Gardens, check out and make way for duckling statues, picnic under a beautiful tree overlooking the pond, and walk over the iconic footbridge where, during summer time, you will catch a swan boat toting children and eager tourists through the pond. Have your camera ready to capture its peaceful beauty in the middle of a bustling city. Continue on through the Gardens and take in some open green space at the Boston Common, where you can spend time throwing a frisbee, sitting on a park bench, or, in the winter time, skating on the frog pond. Head north from the end of the Common to see the golden dome of the State House, and travel through government center to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall, both a historic and popular destination worth a quick visit for a first time to Boston. Head to Long Wharf to visit the Aquarium, or catch a boat to Charlestown or even Cape Cod.

- Jaime FHamilton, Canada76 contributionsWell worth seeing if only to see the building itselfThe building itself is worth seeing. The architecture is beautiful and the great hall upstairs reminds me of the scene in the Patriot where they were debating on whether to go to war with England. To think what has taken place in that room over the last 200 plus years brought me a sense of reverence and I’m not American! Also good to know this a place that has public restrooms which is always good to know for all the walking you do in this city.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 October 2023
- dustythoughtsManchester, Connecticut2,168 contributionsFun, busy tourist destinationLarge, upscale, slightly eclectic marketplace that includes Quincy Market (the food-space) and a variety of clothes and other assorted items. Some of the wares are pretty pricey, as this is a prime tourist destination, but it's also enjoyable to wander the stores and window-shop. It gets really busy during mealtimes and weekends, so plan accordingly.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 October 2023
- Rashae WilliamsYardley, Pennsylvania42 contributionsFun time, lots of shops, good exploringCame here with our 8 month old for lunch on our way back to the parking garage, at the end of the Freedom Trail. We loved just walking around! Fun place, lots of shops and people, good for the experience. We ended up eating inside Quincy Market and loved the food (Kong Dogs). Would come back and try something else or eat there again!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 October 2023
- OrlandoMouseSt. Augustine, Florida2,322 contributionsWhen visiting Boston - this is a must seeOne of the best centerpieces of historical Boston is the section known as Faneuil Hall Marketplace. There are several rows of buildings. Many shops and eateries are located here. It is a great place to also find souvenirs. It is located along the red brick Freedom trail and between Boston Commons and the North End. The main building is a long hall with many eateries located on each side. There is little or no seating at each of these eateries. Patrons will usually find a table at the center dome area or upstairs in that same area. Some will take their food outside to eat at one of the benches on a good weather day. Along the hall are covered wings on each side. This is the area where you will find T-shirts, cups, shot glasses and other souvenir’s. The other two bordering buildings have numerous shops, hot sauces, and ice cream. In the plaza area, the Sameul Adams Taproom can also be located. At one end of the main hall is Ned Devine’s. When visiting traditional Boston this is the hangout to find students, tourists, and people in historical outfits providing information on the area. Don’t miss this place.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2023
- RoaryVancouver, Canada3,677 contributionsUnauthenticWalked through twice while visiting Boston. We walked through on our own time, and not in a tour setting, so I’m sure there was some interesting history to learn. So not having any historical background about the area, it was sort of neat to walk through, but felt there were a lot of things there that made it unauthentic. Overpriced food, street performances that didn’t really match the historical significance of the area, a dinosaur exhibit, huge Sephora store and high end shops - tourist friendly enough, but really took away from the cultural signature of the space. But entertaining enough as a tourist.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 October 2023
- theiting47 contributionsHeart & Soul of the AreaReally neat place to do some shopping for authentic Boston goods. The whole atmosphere surrounding Faneuil and Quincy is incredible. We were there close to Halloween so the college folks were out in full force hitting the bars. During the day, there was also an outside market across the street with locals vending their goods, some live music, and more atmosphere. I made sure to get my "wicked smaht" t-shirt from a vendor in Faneuil. Don't worry, someone will teach you how to properly pronounce the name of the hall.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 October 2023
- John THuddersfield, United Kingdom84 contributionsDifficult to pronounce, very easy to enjoyGreat mixture of shops and market stall carts. Food section all together which makes it busy but at least you’re not searching for where things are, and a wide variety of food options. The buskers/performers were top class. Could do with better signage for the toilets though.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024
- Alireza123Tehran, Iran1,378 contributionsBest place to eat in BostonVery nice place lots of choices to eat .the price is not cheap but reasonable. Boston is famous for food and for sea food. We had lobster roll ( for first time)which was very delicious and clam chowder soup there. This place is a must see in boston and if you follow freedom trail you will catch it.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 May 2024
- hoben57Houston, Texas101 contributionsIt's like going to the MallIt's kind of like going to the mall. The central part is basically a giant food court with a big selection of things. We were there mid/late afternoon and it was mostly kids who were probably just out of school. To me, it's not really significant to the Freedom Trail but it is nice place to walk around and shop. The property was donated and named after merchant Peter Faneuil back in the 1740s.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 May 2024
- CarGeek36 contributionsGet your food on - so many great choicesIf you can’t find something to eat here, you’re not hungry. Seafood, Asian, healthy, hotdogs, baked goods, gelato, juice bar, Greek, etc. Although the place definitely caters to tourists, pricing is about what you’d find anywhere else.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 July 2024

The last time I was a Faneuil was about 30 years ago. This time in July, 2021 we were a group of 10 walking the Freedom Trail. This is a great old building, but what is now inside seems quite different. No much for food delicacies and more corporate wares booths. There were some street performers beginning to put on a show outside and everyone (in our group) except my wife and I moved to sit in a circle around the performers. I would have much rather explored the upstairs at Faneuil and in nearby Quincy Market, but with the crowds gathered around the entrances we simply just people watched outside instead.

I enjoyed walking around Faneuil Hall Marketplace and seeing all the shops that was available. I definitely recommend coming on a weekday if you can because there weren’t a lot of people when I went. You can definitely spend 1-2 hours here looking at everything. If you decide to come here, also check out the Quincy Market because they are right next to each other.

Faneuil Hall is actually 1 of 4 building that offer retail and food vendors. Faneuil Hall is the historical building of the four. In the center you can buy souvenirs that actually support the park. Restrooms are located in the basement as well as an ongoing video about the building and history. The main floor has one food vendor, one park shop and other local vendors.

If you go in hungry it's hard to decide just what you want to eat. There was such a great assortment of every kind of food you could imagine, from dinner type food to desserts ! The only draw back was that you had to stand up and eat as there weren't any tables. It was a neat place though.

of all the places you must visit in Boston it is where Liberty started in this country.
This is the place.... you must go here to see the room where they started the revalution with the King of England and his troops. Near where the first Colonist was shot dead and the citizens rose up to beat the tea act and threw the tea from an English ship into the sea. This is History. Now for the food... go oh just walk across the small plaza and you enter into a world of food. Now I must admit when in Boston this is my favorite place. I know others will say go to the North End for Italian food or pizza. but really if you are here for a good time this is the place. You can get the same pizza here and Italian and chinese and Korean and hot dogs and you get the idea.
Just about anything from corned beef sandwiches to chocolate chip cookies with lots of seating in this huge building. You may have to wait a few minutes due to the large crowds of people but they move out. Lots of food inside and places along the outside under cover attached to the building. If you miss this, I think you miss the Icon of Boston and a great historic area so bring the kids. Oh,yes,if it is a nice day you will have all kinds of free entertainment outside on the area around the building. Adults and kids have a fantastic time so spend some time here.

We spent more time here than expected. A must for history buffs, especially if you know about some of the famous speakers who have spoken here. Read all the plaques, soak it in, and make a donation (it's free, otherwise). We even ended up walking up all the way to the top where there is a large area dedicated to the history of a local national guard unit. The bottom has shops, etc., but we didn't spent as much time there since it seemed like pretty much the same Boston memorabilia you see at shops all around town. There were some performer and dancers outside as well, and we watched them for a little while.

It is good to see that the old buildings in the area are being used not destroyed in the name of progress. A good variety of shops and cobbled streets lets a person imagine the days when spices, tea and other items bring brought in were traded and sold. I know another posted concern over the name of the hall, and while true, the fact is that history even recent history has those that have statues that had questionable things in their lives as well and this should not deter someone from going here.

On a hot, crowded Sunday afternoon we were enjoying the Historic Boston Freedom Trail. Historically Faneuil Hall was a large market building that served as a meeting place for Patriots on the eve of the American Revolution. Meetings were held to discuss the Stamp Act, the Boston Massacre, the tea crisis, and other grievances with Britain were all held at Faneuil Hall between 1764 and 1775.
Today Faneuil Hall Marketplace is air-conditioned & filled with shops, restaurants, pubs, and pushcarts. Great stop while visiting Boston!

Working our way to Harpoon, we stopped by the Marketplace and walked around the area. I enjoyed the cobblestone walkways and the ability to scope out the sites. I really wanted to purchase an ice cream cone, but thought that almost $10 a scoop was a little too much.

Wanted to visit the market place this weekend 2/19 - 2/21 2021. Is everything closed due to covid ?

Is Boston/ Fanueil Hall area open and lively like it used to be now with Covid? Curious how a Saturday night will be?

I was just there right before all this hit in February. I was notified that they closed the Cheers Faneuil location because of the COVID> so I doubt everything is running as before unfortunately.

Heading to Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall on 1/26. Anyone know if parking will be easy during this time of year? If it is, where should we park? Thanks.
Written 24 January 2019
Down on the waterfront about a 10 minute walk you can get parking for around 18 bucks for the day. Sargents or Lewis Wharf on parking are within a dollar or two of each other and are on Commercial St.

There are some Shops around the market. You can not compare this with the typical malls in USA. The market him self is a big eating place. Bar’s, Pizzeria, Fisch, Burgers and the most fames Boston Chowder ans a lot more...

Very helpful staff and security team. Long story...wife lost her wallet and the security team at Faneuil Hall Marketplace was very instrumental in getting it back to us.

Is there parking available and if so what is the pricing?
Written 6 June 2017
It is much cheaper to take Uber or Lyft, there is much street parking, but the trick is to find a spot and keep your bearings.
We've spent many a day driving around for 10-20 minutes just to avoid paying $20 for a garage.
