In early November I travelled to the Big South Fork National Recreation Area to add another national park service location to my list of places visited. Overall the visit was slightly disappointing since many of the locations that I wanted to see were at less than their full glory- The region was suffering from a water shortage and the waterfalls... You need to drive back a few miles on a dirt road (Divide Road) to get to the trail head. It's a well kept road, but your car is gonna get dirty. You can make this a short loop hike to the Arches or an all day loop hike covering an old lodge and multiple rock shelters. Either direction of... More

Amazing arches and rock formations. The trail is well kept and there is a great picnic area and loo at the parking.

I was thinking that BSF was going to be similar to the smokies, but it was very different. The Twin Arches are a must see as is the rest of the loop hike. Be sure to stop at the Charit Creek Lodge for a snack, everyone there very friendly. On the loop back there is a spur trail 1.5 miles... More

An easy hike leads to this area. The arches are beautiful and huge in size. It does require some stairs along the trail but the whole hike is beautiful.

The kids loved seeing this and climbing around on the rocks and just hanging out there for awhile. We came in on the upper loop so we were on top of both arches.

Excellent dirt roads to trail head. Super signage at the parking lot. Love stairs on steep slopes...protects the train and the environment. Very well maintained trail, certainly didn't expect to see the large twin arches. tough to see the size due to forest, but the forest added to the adventure. We visited on a rainy day and walking through trees,... More

Definitely a must see at Big South Fork! Road are well maintained and so the trails. Maps are really helpful and if you have questions, just stop at the Ranger Station. They were great! Can't describe how Beautiful it is, pictures don't do justice! Just enjoy the view. Great to teach your homeschooling child geology! Highly recommend!

We take our Boys Scout Troop here often, and it's always a great backpacking trip. From Slave Falls, to Needle Arch, and the larger Twin Arches this park offers so many unique natural features. We usually take trails that leads us to stay at Jake's Place (an old farm ruins within the park). There is a stream going through the... More
