Description:

The main visitor center for the Appalachian Trail and one of the most...

The main visitor center for the Appalachian Trail and one of the most famous landmarks on the entire 2,190-mile national scenic trail. It's considered the 'psychological half-way point' on the Appalachian Trail. All are welcome, from tourists to "thru-hikers" walking the entire trail. The center has exhibits, a gift shop where you can purchase maps, books, and souvenirs. A 10-foot 3D map shows the entire East Coast, with a miniature replica trail shelter built into the back side. A hiker lounge offers long-distance hikers a place to relax and recharge, with cold and hot drinks available. A collection of more than 25,000 photos of hikers taken since 1979 is one of the most unique features. Those intent on walking the entire A.T. will have their photo added to the collection, but anyone can take a photo of themselves out in front on the sign for a memorable snapshot. By visiting Harpers Ferry, you'll have already started the 14-state challenge, which encourages hikers to visit one location in each of the Trail's 14 states. If you visit lower town historic Harpers Ferry just a half mile away and walk across the footbridge over the Potomac River, you'll have already completed two states.

After hiking on the AT on 2 different days from Harper's Ferry, we stopped in to see the Conservancy. Loved the 3D map of the whole trail, and super impressed that people actually hike the entire thing! Staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. The only place that after I made a purchase, the cashier asked if I wanted a bag.... More

Wonderful people to answer your questions. A must stop if hiking the ATC. There is alot of printed material and maps, but the most useful info is questions and answers from experienced hikers.

We stumbled upon this storefront while hiking the area, and were greeted at the door by the friendly and helpful staff. Loads of free charts and experience to draw on, as well as a nice hiking supplies and gifts collection.

Helpful and friendly staff member greeted us at the door with a big smile and an offer of assistance. We had actually just stumbled on the storefront while hiking the area, and simply wanted to browse the information displays and the gift offerings for the grandchildren. Anyone even remotely interested in hiking the AT must add this quaint little stop... More

We visited to get information about the Appalachian Trail for a future hike. The volunteers there couldn't be nicer or more helpful with information and ideas. We walked away with loads of information on how we could design an Appalachian Trail hike for ourselves and our friends.

If you have any interest in the Appalachian Trail, or are even just outdoorsy, it's worth a stop here at the ATC headquarters. It is the unofficial halfway point of the Appalachian Trail which stretches from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mt Katahdin in Maine. Every year hundreds of hikers attempt to hike the entire route from end to end,... More

If you know anyone who has ever hiked this portion of the Appalachian Trail, chances are very high they stopped here, had a photo taken, shared some foood, and told trail stories here. All of that is memorialized in many thick binders that staff or a volunteer is only too eager to help you locate their entry in as long... More

If you are in the area or are at all interested in the Appalachian trail this is a great place to get information and see a scale size 3D map of the entire hike.

While on vacation last week in Harper's Ferry and Skyline Drive, my husband and I stopped at the Conservancy. Our niece had completed the trail 2 years ago as a "thru hiker." When we mentioned this, the young man explained that the large binders on the shelves contained information about hikers who had come thru. After giving him a timeframe... More
