After speaking with the staff at the AMC center we chose to go south out of town for a day hike to Keys Gap and back. Nice elevation change to Louden heights, good civil war earthworks on both sides at the top, relatively easy to the gap. Having hiked many sections of the AT we thoroughly enjoyed this day in... We are by no means hikers or campers but if hiking the Appalachian Trail is on your Bucket List then doing it in Harper's Ferry WV is the place. The trail runs right through the town and you can see some interesting things. It is pretty neat that you can be in three states within a matter of minutes. You get... More

Now that there are hiking the trail movies and one in production about the War being filmed there will be a million people disrespecting the AT here too. So much for preservation of the good stuff. Finding your innerself? Really?

PenMar to Harpers Ferry is a great and fairly easy way to experience part of the great AT. Stayed in Harpers Ferry at The Town's Inn and paid to be shuttled when we chose on a Wednesday. Had just enough challenge with rocks, climbs and mud (rained 3 days in a row). Stayed in a shelter one night and a... More

We stopped at Harper's Ferry on a recent road trip through West Virginia and decided to take a short hike on the AT. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy headquarters is located in town so we stopped there first for directions. We walked from the ATC office to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The trail is pretty easy, although there are some... More

You can hike the AT in different ways from this spot. Great sights along the river with a ton of history as well. Check out the AT Concervacy Center on the main road coming into town. Cool relief map of the trail, example of a shelter, and tons more.

I have walked parts of the Appalachian Trail durig my years in West Virginia. So many historic sites to see and visit, I can see Through Hikers (people walking the trail) everyday. I ride the MARC train from Washington DC to Harpers Ferry and in the summer you wonder what that smell is and then you notice the scraggily dressed... More

We love the AT. Such a great trail. All levels of difficulty and we love multi day hikes where we camp on the way. Shelters are always fun and meeting hikers is so entertaining.

Being on Harpers Ferry means you will have to be on or cross the Appalachian trail. Take advantage of being a part of one of the best natural resources we have

This is a fabulous trail. You can find all levels of difficulty but on of my favorite bits is from Keyes Gap parking down to Harper's Ferry National Park. A bit rocky but downhill all the way and great views especially when you get close to the river right before getting to the Park. Depending on the time of today... More
