This is your backstage pass to the coolest area in the universe! Stroll through the cosmic history of it all, from rock’n roll to art, fashion and architecture, this fantastic walking adventure gives you real insight into the cosmic draw of the Haight-Ashbury! The tour is approximately 60% hippy history and 40% general neighborhood history and architecture, but it is always 100% ‘far-out’ fun! Saunter along the same streets that Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell and countless others etched their marks into the collective alternative culture and creativity of the 20th century! Approximately 12 blocks, final destination 2 blocks from the point of origin. A poetic and symbolic act of retracing the footsteps of so many, returning with greater understanding and heightened consciousness.

Sunny was a ray of sun from the summer of love. She educated us about the history of the area and the changes that have taken place,

Really this was one of the best tours we've taken like this (and we have done a lot in many places in the US and abroad). Stan was very knowledgeable and interesting and having lived in the area since the early 1980's he knew a lot of the 1960's history and beyond. Saw things and went places we would have... More

I can't remember our tour guides' name, but I was so pumped when she showed up completely decked out in tie-dye and offered us glitter- she is smart and super knowledgable about her community. I was really impressed by her involvement in various programs and admired her passion- i was not expecting to have that aspect during our tour, and... More

This was a terrific walking tour that far exceeded my expectations, The guide was very knowledgeable about the history, architecture and inhabitants, especially during the 60s and Summer of Love. Plus, Stan the guide was very entertaining and funny when relating the various stories and memories from the area, An excellent value for the money - -3-plus hours, highly recommended!

Both the tour guide and the weather. What a great tour - lot's of local knowledge of both the historical and present day Haight Ashbury. Sunny is clearly a pivotal member of the community, so who better to show you around?

Take this tour. The price is reasonable and the guide is both knowledgeable and entertaining. Haight-Ashbury is rich in history and interesting stories.

First Of All It States 10.30-1.00. Incorrect. Our Tour Finished At 12.15. Probably Just As Well As The Guides Interest Ran Out Well Before That. If You Have No Interest In The Grateful Dead Then There's Not A Lot Of Point Going. Other Than That, The Area Is Very Interesting And Well Worth Investigating.

This walking tour was a fantastic introduction to Haight Ashbury. Loved walking the streets with our knowledgeable guide and hearing all about the history and significance of this area. Hearing about things that are currently going on in the community now was really interesting too.

Staying in Haight-Ashbury

Neighbourhood Profile
Haight-Ashbury
The area surrounding the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, “The Haight” still exudes vibes of the 1960s counterculture as a haven for vintage clothes, music, pop posters and body piercing shops. While the Summer of Love ended decades ago, Haight-Ashbury has turned into a melting pot of hippies, hipsters, and professionals. Walking through its streets can still feel like stepping back in time. A must-see neighbourhood for most music fans, it’s easy to see why these streets attracted the likes of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. You’ll likely be content in The Haight day or night, just be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.
