A Lovely Park, Atop Nob Hill

Huntington Park, is a multi-use park, essentially at the top of Nob Hill. It’s bordered on the north by Sacramento St, on the west by Taylor St (with Grace Cathedral facing it), on the east by Sproule Lane (with the imposing Pacific Union building), and then on the south by California St, with one of the city’s cable car lines (with the Huntington Hotel facing the park).

I had walked around it, and maybe through it before, as we have stayed at the near-by Fairmont and the Ritz Carlton, but I had never spent any time there, until our August trip.

Going to visit Grace Cathedral, I stopped in Huntington Park, first to admire the Cathedral, but then lingered to take in the Park, itself.

For the first time, I noticed the statuary, and fountain, and also the play ground. I had missed all of those details, when walking along California St, before. Though it was late morning, on a weekday, folk were already coming to the many benches, to enjoy lunch, in the sunshine. There were several families, in the playground, and ladies pushing strollers, along the paved pathways, of the basically 1 block square park.

Besides being a lovely park, Huntington offers some great views of Grace Cathedral, the Huntington Hotel, the Pacific Union Building, and then areas of the city, below Nob Hill. On this Summer day, I spent time, taking it all in, and enjoying Huntington Park.

I would allocate at least an hour, and even if one is not really interested in the near-by architecture.

Found this peaceful park across from the impressive Grace cathedral. Lose the tourists- see another side of SF.Fab water fountains of the quality found in Europe. Ladies doing Tai Chi. Dog owners and a play park.really nice. Atop Nob Hill- u must be able to walk up a hill!

I enjoyed going to Huntington Park, which is in the Nob Hill area of San Francisco. It is located between Grace Cathedral and the Fairmont Hotel.

There are nice places to sit. For the children there is a playground. There are also pretty sculptures.

This compact park across the way from Grace Cathedral is one of Nob Hill's treasures. It certainly packs a lot into a city block. Intensely green turf, paved walkways, places to sit, a fountain, artsy statuary, even a playground for the kids. I hate that our guide had to hustle us through the park during a gentle rain. I'd like to have lingered a while to soak in the comforting vibe of the place.

My wife and I have traveled to San Francisco for many years and we always end up strolling around Huntington Park on Nob Hill. That may sound strange in a city that offers so much to see, but this park speaks volumes about the city. It is a step back to a time when San Francisco represented more than tech companies. The centerpiece of the park is the Fountain of the Tortoises which is encircled by benches. Residents from the surrounding neighborhood frequent the park throughout the day, many with their dogs. Regardless of the time of day, a few minutes viewing the fountain and soaking in the ambiance will transport you back to a gentler time.

Huntington Park is situated just across from the Scarlet Huntington Hotel, one of the historic hotels from the early 1900s. The square is beautifully maintained and has a very English feel to it. It has a fountain at its centre that is a replica of the famous Fontana delle Tartarughe in Rome. We've seen the one in Rome and it struck us straight away that this was a copy, so we looked it up online and indeed it is! What I loved about the park is that it appears to be the walking area for the local Nob Hill dog owners (although the dogs look like they are mostly there with their walkers). All very well behaved. It is surrounded by historic and attractive buildings, including Grace Cathedral. If you are staying downtown, you'll need a big hike up a hill (or catch the cable car up California Street to Grace Cathedral) to see it. It is in one of the best areas of the city.

Old money ruled here at the time of the Great Quake, today its vestiges remain. Locals frequent the area, many walk dogs. That shabby dressed older man may have zillions of bucks.
Enjoy!

In a busy city like San Francisco every park, big and small, gives the city air to breathe. This is a small park but when you're for instance attending a conference at the Fairmont it's worth visiting.

This is a beautiful park near the Grace Cathedral and at the top of Nob Hill. It's a peaceful place to sit after the long walk up!
