Classic old building at the cable car turnaround, quite impressive as an early skyscraper. Ho-hum stores at street level.

This is a notable and old skool building that is marred by being infested by a Gap store at the base. Total sad.

Great old historic SF building. It survived the 1906 earthquake. In the 70's there was a five and dime store on the first floor. They hired a 'speiler' (an English man who moved from department selling a single item to a crowd using great energy) He was amazing to watch, continued speaking and when someone bought, he would hold the... I love this building. It is one of the few buildings that survived the 1906 earthquake. It has been completely restored and it is just gorgeous, but in a very authentic way. Dashiell Hammett worked in this building and then used it in his detective novels. You can definitely imagine a private eye having an office in this building. But... More

My wife and I recently became acquainted with The Flood Building during an architectural tour of San Francisco that we took on a recent visit to this great city. The Flood Building is an icon of San Francisco real estate. Built in 1904, it was one of the few large buildings to weather the 1906 earthquake largely in tact, and... More

The Flood Building on Market Avenue is known for its history and its use of marble. It was built in 1904 and is one of the few big buildings to survive the Earthquake of 1906. I find the history and architecture both interesting to see. Samuel Dashiell Hammett who was an American author of detective novels and short stories, a... More

Nice historical building near the cable car turnaround. The Flood Building was one of the few buildings to survive the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire in downtown San Francisco (Old St. Mary's Cathedral being another). HISTORY BEFORE 1904 "The Baldwin Hotel & Theater (owned by historical figure "Lucky" Baldwin) occupied the site of today's Flood Building. It was destroyed by... More
