Neighbourhood: Chinatown
As the oldest in North America, San Francisco's Chinatown is an exotic experience. A unique neighbourhood decorated with colourful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighbourhood.

I was very near here so I thought why not stop by? I am happy I did. They literally make the fortune cookies in front of you while you shop. They have prepacked cookies both folded and unfolded with different flavors. As you shop and look around they give you fresh unfolded samples of their goodies here. The cookies are so fresh and perfect for snacking as you go about your day. You can also buy fortune cookies where you write your own fortune cookie and pack them in Chinese to-go boxes. I bought a bag with regular, strawberry and green tea flavors. I love the subtle flavors they added to the fortune cookie. They do provide reusable shopping bags for $1 and with that they also add more samples into your bag.

This is a great place to get fortune cookies. I haven’t been on the tour but going in you can see where the cookies come off of the line and see women put the fortune in it and then bend/fold them and set them to dry.

It is down a small alley in Chinatown. It doesn’t take much of your time but definitely worth a short visit.

It was cool to see them make these by hand and get free hot samples. I didn't pay much attention to the reviews about how great these taste because different people like different things, but these actually tasted good.
We should have bought a cup of milk tea from one of the bakeries in the morning and came here for breakfast.
There was a huge line here during our first attempt to come here in the afternoon. We ended up coming here early the next day.

This was fun place to visit and I am glad we found it. Just nice and simple and quaint. It only takes a few minutes and you get a chance to watch them make fortune cookies! And boy do they taste good fresh! It is in an alley one block from Grand Ave.

The place is small but that is all you need to see how fortune cookies are made. Very simple yet interesting.

There are different kinds of fortune cookies but the demonstration on site is focused on the simple fortune cookie that we usually get with our chinese food.

No appointments needed; just walk-in and it is free admission. They offer free samples too.

Grab a couple boxes of different fortune cookies and their price is inexpensive.

Fortune cookies are an American invention and it's not part of Chinese culture, There are many stories behind who created the fortune cookie. They most likely originated from Japanese immigrants to the United States in the late 19th or early 20th century. David Jung, founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company in Los Angeles, has made a competing claim that he invented the cookie in 1918. But the judge ruled in favor of the Japanese.
I have taken tour groups here to witness how fortune cookies are made from a machine. They sell a variety of fortune cookies with the classic almond flavor as well as chocolate, strawberry and green tea. They also sell a giant fortune coffee for $ 6.50 like the one I show in the pics. It's a fun place to visit.

The fortune cookie factory is right in the heart of Chinatown. It's fun to see them baking the cookies and stuffing the fortunes inside them. Admission is free, and they are very generous with the free samples. I got even more freebies together with a bag of fortune cookies I bought as a souvenir. It only takes a few minutes to visit, and it's definitely worth the trip.

We walked here on a food tour and witnessed disgusting rude behavior from
the manager towards our tour guide. All because our tour was 5 min late. My husband and I agreed we would never give this place the business while we stay in San Francisco.

I went to the Golden Gate Fortune Cookies Company in Chinatown area. Since its Chinese New Years time (Year of the Rat), they were verey busy. A school group was also there to watch the bakers.

I spoke to some of the people there which was fun.

I purchased some cookies and they had some samples.

This is a really fun thing to do.

If strolling around San Francisco’s China Town, it is worth the stop. The line is short and staff will hand you an unrolled warm cookie. Not a big fortune cookie person but it was delicious and we ended up buying some chocolate covered fortune cookies.
