Lovely Sunday Mass
Jul. 2019
Lovely Sunday Mass

During our July business trip to San Francisco, we attended Mass at St. Patrick Catholic Church at 756 Mission St, across from Yerba Buena Gardens. As we are, or were, in San Francisco every month for about 15 years, and often came in on Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon, my wife almost always attended Mass there. I was usually unpacking, and not being Catholic, seldom accompanied her, but on this Sunday morning, I did. As her corporate office has moved from San Francisco, to Chicago, we will not be in town, nearly so often, so I wanted to visit St. Patrick with her, and am so glad that we did.

I had seen St. Patrick from the outside so very many times, but had only been inside for a few of their evening services. With the sun streaming in, the chapel was more vibrant, than I recalled. It was even more beautiful.

The congregation filled much of the interior space, and my wife indicated that it was that way for most of the Masses, which she has attended - enough, that the Priest thinks she is a parishioner.

A lovely, and historic Catholic Church, and well-worth spending time to view the interiors. I also love the exteriors, as it is sort of sandwiched in between some high-rise structures, so there is a major juxtaposition of architectural styles.

After Mass, we spent some time walking around Yerba Buena Gardens, directly across the street from St. Patrick.

They Saved It

There is urban renewal all around this old church and as a result the vestiges of this part of San Francisco have been erased and replaced with modern downtown buildings and a bunch of museums. Nice to see this historic church remains, so visit!

Quick Visit
Oct. 2019 • Solo
After visiting the adjacent Yerba Buena Gardens, I stopped into this lovely church dating back more than 150 years (rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake). The red brick exterior is of Gothic revival style. Inside, there are 32 stunning Tiffany-style stained glass windows (one for each of Ireland’s 32 counties). A service was taking place during my visit so I kept my stay short.

Blessed to be able to attend mass
Oct. 2019 • Solo
I make it a point to visit a catholic church in any place that I visit. What more being educated in St. Patrick's School in Singapore. Visiting any cnurch that's dedicated to St. Patrick.

Just about 20 minute walk from my hotel, I planned to just go and take photo, but was blessed to be able to attend mass which just happened to be starting within minutes of my reaching the place.

Mass was solemn as expected anywhere in the world. I would go there again if given the chance. No doubt.

Beautiful Sunday experience

This beautiful church is home to a true melting pot of congregants. We walked to it from our hotel near Oracle Park, and it was worth the walk to attend mass with this diverse community.

Another Spiritual Gem in the City

The history of this Church is well documented so please check out their site. It was founded in 1851 and is #4 of the San Francisco Historical Landmarks. I went to the 9:30 am Mass on Mother's day. The interior is amazing, a mix of history, art and spirituality! No longer an Irish ethnic Church, it shepherds to today's community. This Mass was predominately attended by the local Philippine ethnic community and was nearly full as the service began. The presider was from Tanzania, Fr. "Obet" a wonderful homilist. An aging choir but still singing in one strong voice. He remarked how this was a church open to all; that's how I felt as I departed. I spoke and joked with Fr. before he left to visit mothers who had no one to share this day. This is one of the islands of peace and respite in a boisterous city!

A beautiful church in a modest neighborhood
Apr. 2019 • Friends
We attended Good Friday services at this small church, surrounded by a fervent and passionate congregation. The church was packed and we barely found room to sit. The ceremony of the Stations to the Cross was quite moving and the congregation followed the priest and the other readers with baited breath. The church has beautiful stone carvings and stained glass and it gets plenty of natural light.
