Top ways to experience Mission District
The area
Neighbourhood: Mission District
From burritos to bicyclists, the Mission is the foundation for all things hip in the city. Cultural attractions, an independent arts community, sumptuous street murals and a high density of bars and cafes make this neighbourhood a magnet for young people. While terrific inexpensive food is abundant, its top-of-the-line restaurants now compete with the city’s best for fashionable diners. Indulge as the locals do by heading to Mission Dolores Park, buy some ice cream, and savor one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the country.

Walked around the Mission District today for about an hour and a half based on some reviews I read about the great art and authentic Mexican food. Started at the Taqueria El Farolito and ordered the carne asada burritos. The food was very good but shady characters in the immediate area and the smell of urine on the way in to the restaurant really made the experience not worth it for us. We then headed to Valencia street and walked into some unique shops before arriving at the Clarion Alley murals. The murals were cool but there wasn’t much else worth seeing in the area. We then walked up to Mission Dolores Church. It’s architecture was beautiful but unfortunately it was closed and we couldn’t go in. I would not recommend walking around this neighborhood unless burritos and graffiti art are your passion. Disappointing experience overall.

Cool collection of restaurants and funky shops. Lots of live music on the sidewalks on weekends. Food from all corners of the world at great prices. Not for everyone, similar to SOHO in NYC, South street in Philadelphia or 6th Street in Austin. Wall murals, graffiti, music, second hand shops, weed smoking, etc. Funky, fine and harmless hippie vibe.

Not much has changed here, except that it has gotten worse. Even more homeless people, streets of tents, lots of dirt, and the stench, drug addicts as far as the eye can see. If I hadn't been so enamored with the pictures, I wouldn't have gone through there, but the pictures are world class and worth seeing alone.

We often read that this neighborhood can be quite dangerous. As a result we limited our visit to the most touristic points, without going too far. That said we never felt in danger and really enjoyed the neighborhood, where it feels like we were screened in South America!

Post Covid much more run down. Homeless everywhere. Sad lack of city services for vulnerable population. Excellent taquerias, but not what it once was. Some safety issues. Worst subway stop ever.

I drove through here as part of a city tour. We saw some of the street art which was quite cool. The most impressive was the one on the women's center. I have read reviews which say this district is unsafe and others which say it is good. For me, since we just drove through it was okay. But I guess you should be careful when coming here.

I had a good time returning to and exploring the Mission District. I enjoyed lunch at Pancho Villa Taqueria. I explored some of the shops in the area. I then did a self guided tour of historic Mission Delores.

In addition, I liked the street murals in the ara.

The place to head to is Valencia Street where you will find some very good restaurants and markets as well as lots of coffee. Very hip and there is some outdoor seating. And it is easy to walk over to Mission to board the underground Muni and BART.

Meh experience. Skippable. Went for Urban Putt which was great but not sure I'd go for much else as a family. As a young adult, would be fun going to the bars. Lots of energy.

The Mission District is one most significant contributors to the city’s character. If you read through other reviews, you might wonder why the area is alternatively referred to as “sketchy,” “grungy,” “frightening” and “booming,” “bohemian,” and “wonderful.” In fact, the area is really too large for a single description. The Mission District should not be missed, but some areas of it are more inviting than others.

If you want to experience a wonderful tour of the area, I’d start at Mission Dolores – the place where it all began for San Francisco. I’d then stroll down to Dolores Park, one of the city’s most interesting places to people watch. The top of the park offers spectacular views of the city. It is a great place for a picnic. Afterwards, walk down 18th Street where you’ll find ice cream fanatics lined up at BiRite Creamery. You’ll also find the fantastic BiRite Market, Delfina restaurant, and Tartine bakery. A little further on you’ll reach Valencia Street. This is perhaps the most “happening” place in the city right now. From 18th, turn left on Valencia, stroll down the right side of the street until 16th, then turn back and walk the right side of the street until you reach 22nd Street.

You can spend an entire afternoon on Valencia Street. It offers interesting shops, great food, great coffee, and fun places to grab drinks. There is a lot of novelty on Valencia! Check out the murals on Clarion Alley (Valencia and 17th) across from the police station. Take a break at the playground at 19th and Valencia. Locanda, The Chapel, Range are just a few of the places you’ll find great drinks. If you’re feeling a little funkier then maybe try a fresh greyhound at the Latin American Club at Valencia and 22nd Street, then grab tapas across the street at Esperpento.

If you still feel like touring, walk to 24th Street, turn left, cross over Mission Street and keep walking. About 4 major blocks later you’ll be in another interesting area with cafes and restaurants and local flavor. You can watch the ladies make fresh tortillas at La Palma while you order some take out. Or go to the Roosevelt Tamale Parlor or St. Francis diner.

Another gem in the Mission District is quite a bit farther out at Mission and Ceasar Chaves. El Rio is a neighborhood bar and community space that hosts some really fun events. Sundays during the daytime in summer you’ll likely find a live salsa band and lots of tipsy patrons showing their moves on the outdoor patio.

Now then, Mission Street itself, specifically within the Mission District, is not for everyone. There you’ll find all the major inner city issues, including homelessness, poverty, mental illness, and drug abuse. This is particularly true between 14th and 22nd streets, with 16th and Mission the epicenter of the urban craziness. Park your car along Mission Street with extreme caution, as even in daytime you may have your windows smashed. Walking this area at night is not a great idea. Some will disagree, but better safe than sorry. Mission Street is one kind of vibe. You can easily skip it if it doesn’t appeal to you.

The Mission District shouldn’t be missed. Just plan your visit according to your taste and tolerance. If you follow the recommendations I made, I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time. The more adventurous can branch out from there. Have fun!
