Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great shopping and eating. It changes through the years, but remains an excellent neighborhood, full of wonderful meditative walking streets--a nice place for a break from your usual haunts ... unless, you are fortunate enough to call this your usual haunt.

We wanted an economical alternative to staying in downtown SFO for a few nights before my conference (downtown) began. What a GREAT area Cow Hollow is! It is mostly residential, but there are neighborhood bars, shops, restaurants around. It was perfect. Nothing too touristy like Fish Wharf. Everything felt more local and we loved the food and places. Would definitely stay there again, and the park nearby is beautiful!

Cow Hollow may not be as polished as the Marina District but it still has much to offer. There are many great restaurants (see my review of Gamine) and numerous stores to explore. There are also a number of smaller hotels in the area - I would give serious consideration to having it serve as home base for a trip to San Francisco.
Cow Hollow is an easy walk from the Fisherman's Wharf/Ghiradelli Square area - definitely try together there during your visit to San Fran.

The rooms are large, with comfortable beds and adequate furnishing. The location is perfect for our needs. It's near Chestnut Street where there are many good restaurants and shops. Our room faced a courtyard overlooking ISA restaurant's tented area. Until 10ish at night things are pretty noisy there. There's ample free parking which is a major plus in San Francisco. The rates are a bit high but much lower than the downtown area hotels.

This is an area for budget motels where you can find cheaper accommodation and free parking, useful if you have a rental car. Its easy from here to get to the Golden Gate Bridge and to Fisherman's Wharf.
The area was once known for field were cows grazed.

My wife and I spent in evening in this area and we're sadly unimpressed. It was quiet, dark, and only mildly interesting...and this was during a Saturday night amidst the Xmas break.
It's very local-ish. But would have preferred to have been in North Beach or Union Square having now seen it.

My wife and I stayed in Union Square, so it was refreshing to get out of downtown and come down to this more relaxed area. We didn't eat here, but we went to a lot of shops, and we saw some good-looking restaurants we wished we had checked out.

Wound up here to go to a restaurant that didn't take brunch reservations, so had lots of time to stroll the streets before our wait to be seated was over. Lots of interesting shops, a few chains thrown in (e.g., Sephora), but most local retailers with interesting items to sell. Worth exploring.

We ambled into Cow Hollow after looking at Victorian houses in Presidio Heights. The Painted Ladies here didn't seem quite as grand, but they were still worth a look. We visited on a national holiday so I noted many residents out and about. They seemed to be 20- and 30-somethings.
The big drawing card for tourists here would be Cow Hollow's shopping area -- Union Street. It offers everything from quirky boutiques to a consignment shop and the opportunity to find something unique. I found it fun to simply windowshop.
Cow Hollow earned its name because of the cows that used to graze here. It covers 42 blocks within a rectangular area between Russian Hill and the Presidio and between the Marina District and Pacific Heights.
Lodging, bars and restaurants exist in the neighborhood and we stopped to get something to eat.

Lots of cool shops and restaurants known as Union Street Shops. Recommend spending a bit of time here. Ther are lots of young people giving this area a lot of energy. There is no reason to spend every night on the Wharf, so give this a visit.
