- EndlessVoyageCalifornia1,089 contributionsAlways fun for all ages - great place to get lunch or a snackI have loved the Japanese Tea Gardens since childhood but even on a very rainy day in Autumn it was stunning. The menu has expanded to include food eg Udon, mochi, miso soup etc. Bridges, ponds, beautiful landscaping and that tremendous entry gate with not a single nail. Always fun.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 October 2023

- Departure44528452943France2 contributionsA MUSTMarjorie was so knowledgeable and the tour of the Japanese Gardens was informative and very entertaining. I took 4 SF city guide tours with Phil, Bill, Matt and Marjorie and they ALL were terrific - would highly recommend… had I more time I would have done one per day! Just wonderful- each one and each guide! A must to partake in!!!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 April 2024
- B d AAthens, Greece1,004 contributionsenriching and subtly provokingThe exceptional guide made it all. We comprehended what the tea garden is, the history and the accoutrements, the adventures of the Japanese after the 1942 attack, the transformation from Japanese to Asian, and the concentration camps. The trimming is what makes the garden and the pictorial scenic setting of the plants with symbolically obsessive underpinnings. A lesson for us in Japanese emotional topography and reflective philosophy.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 May 2024
- Jessica S40 contributionsBeautiful gardenThe Japanese tea garden is beautiful. There is a small cafe with Japanese styled food and drinks. The garden is small but very peaceful, you can sit down and stay however long. There is currently some construction and blocked off parts.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 May 2024
- Mrs_Smitty2013Fresno, California17 contributionsGreat TourGreat tour and tour guide. The guide was very informative and took his time. Tour was also kid friendly. Definitely encourage visitors to get a fortune and also have tea in the gardens. It gives you an opportunity to take in the scenary.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 July 2024
- goldenparadoxPasadena, Maryland587 contributionsAbsolute Must-Do!The Japanese Tea Garden is a beautiful and peaceful escape in the midst of the city. It's peaceful with lots of walking paths and flowing water, perfect was taking a walk to relax or meditate or taking photos of the gardens. Besides the beauty, there is so much history behind the garden and tradition that is woven into how the garden is made and composed of. If you have the chance to take a tour, do it. I took a free tour of the gardens with SF Guides and highly recommend it. Christine was so knowledgeable and friendly!Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 September 2024

I give this place a 100000/10 it was AMAZING. I would love there if I could.. I would visit everyday if I could.. I couldn’t recommend it anymore. We had no idea what to expect when walking in but we’re not disappointed one bit. I believe it was around a 25$-30$ entry fee, it took us about an hour to walk to whole trail. As we were walking we came across around a hundred different plants and trees, all so beautiful and unique like I’ve never seen before. There were waterfalls, japanese structures, ponds, fish, statues, bridges, so many beautiful spots to take pictures. It’s really well designed because there’s multiple paths you can take that sorta cross over each other, one path led us to a secluded forest, one lex us to a pond with a rock bridge we crossed, and so on. People were never in the way due these crossing of paths, as you would simply take a turn when you came upon others. It was so mellow and quite, surrounded by greenery and gorgeous plants, with the sounds of waterfalls surrounding you. It was to die for!! I can’t recommend this place enough..

The garden is filled with several areas separated by greenery, paths, sculpture, and the like. It ends up feeling peaceful and empty even when a lot of people are there. The food itself is very good and overall this is a highlight of the park.

At a cost of $15 per person, this was one of the biggest let downs I have ever experienced. Whilst the gardens are nicely groomed, we walked around the entire site in less than 5mins. To make matters worse a part of it was even closed for renovations. Do not make an effort to visit this and it is certainly not worth the money......

I went to Japanese Tea Garden on Friday (11/19/21) around 9 to 10am; although it has light drizzle. It made this visit even more memorable. The garden is about 5 acres and very well maintained with many different Japanese plants, pond, water fall, tub spring. The water walls was stronger than before; the light drizzle and fog cover some parts of garden and made it mystic. The drum bridge, temple gate and all the tea statues. And tea house is packed with people during tea and having some snack. The first fortunate cookies were made here. And it has a nice gift shops.
This garden was created around 1895, where they hired Mr Makoto Hagiwara the be the gardener and caretaker. and he took care this garden until his death in 1925 (total caring for 30 years). After his death, her daughter and then their children became the proprietor and care taker of this world famous Japanese Tea Garden of San Francisco.
This is located centrally in Golden Gate Park; right next to Dee Young Art Museum. You can take bus 44 to get here (it literally drop you few steps from the front door). Or take Bus 5, 7 or N Train (range from 7 to 10 minutes).
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, there is a free hour between 9 to 10am, no reservation requires, you need to observe the civid19 policy.
This is a must see destination. And there a bunch of great restaurant and cafe in the southern part of Golden Gate Park ( Sunset). Very diverse and international cuisines. Make-sure you check it out.

Compact Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park where you can get tea in a casual setting, visit the small gift shop, walk the gardens, view the bridges, pagodas, water features, etc.
The price was $13 each when we visited in Sept 2022, which I didn't think was worth it. For one, the large pagoda was tented off. You can walk around, visit the gift shop, use the bathroom and be out in 30 minutes. You'll also be competing for photographs with all the 'grammers', especially on the circular bridge.
If you've visited the real thing in Japan or larger Japanese gardens in the USA (Portland for one), I would skip this one. If you haven't, it makes for a tranquil walk with an insight into the basics of a Japanese garden. The tea setting didn't seem very inviting or authentic.

this is a gorgeous place to visit and spend an hour or two. A leisurely walk in the garden is definitely a stress buster. Its meticulously maintained and its a delight for the eyes and mind wandering in the gardens. They also have a lovely Japanese cafe which serves great Japanese and local cuisine We really enjoyed the hour or so we spent there.

This is free parking and free entry. It was a nice little stop we enjoyed walking the grounds and I love taking pictures of flowers so it was right up my alley. There is a little tea shop at the top of the hill. We went in to see what was on the menu but nothing really tired taste so we did not buy anything. It wasn’t crowded at all.

It was quite a bit smaller than I imagined it would be, especially for the price, but still beautiful. You can easily walk the whole garden in 15-20 minutes, and I didn't try out the tea house. There's also a gift shop. Plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the beautiful gardens and ponds. I recommend walking the paths in different directions to get different perspectives of each section.

This Japanese Tea Garden, located in Golden Gate Park, was originally opened in 1894, making it one of the oldest in the area.
It is located on 3 acres in the park and has many of the beautiful features associated with such gardens. The pagoda was closed for repair for our visit but otherwise, everything was beautiful. Beware that there are lots of steps and levels, making it difficult for someone with mobility issues to see everything (or get around at all, really).

While I cannot confirm this for certain, I understand The Tea House at Japanese tea Garden currently offers six kinds of tea: Jasmine, Sencha, HojiCha, Genmaicha, Green and the traditional tea used in ceremonies, Matcha. I don't know which one you're looking for!

Hello I’m looking to propose to my partner how busy does the tea room get on a Sunday? We’ll be coming on Sunday the 13th May. Or would you recommend the park instead.
Thank you

The tea garden would be a beautiful place to pop the question. Especially on a day where the weather is cooperative. I would recommend staying away from the tea room and look for one of the more remote and beautiful areas within the gardens. Best of luck and congratulations!

Trip Advisor - are you sure that you have the Japanese tea garden mapped to the correct site? I marked it as a favorite and then mapped my favorites. It is not showing as being in Golden Gate Park. I am fairly sure that's where it is? Do you have the garden marked where there is a tour? Not interested in a tour.

Trip Advisor has the wrong address and map shown on here.
The Japanese Tea Garden is definitely located in Golden Gate Park, right next to the De Young Museum.
The full address is 75 Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr, San Francisco, CA 94118
