There is no neighborhood in SF called Little Italy
There is no neighborhood in SF called Little Italy. It's called North Beach and it's more than just Italian flare, beatnicks, and more chinese than italians these days.. I have heard tourists call it the "little Italy" of SF much like saying SF is the Paris of the West or something like that. But Little Italy is not the actual name.

Stay in area closest to Washington square.
North beach (it's not called little italy, no idea why they call it little italy) is a very nice "district" in San Francisco. I come here every weekend. I recommend coming here. Also note that too far up Columbus ave is useless. Stay in the area to the south of North beach, the far end of Columbus is kinda sketchy.

    A bit disappointed
We wslked trough this area and we think is was not really something special. There was quite some dirth on the streets an the neigbourhood did not impress me. The restarants we saw did not look inviting for a lunch. May just bad luck

As the name denotes, it is beautiful like Italy
Briefly, it must be on the list. This neighborhood is vibrant and lovely both day and night. It looks like Europe and specifically like Italy as the name denotes. It is full of Italian restaurants and cafes. At night, it is full of people who are staying up until late hours.

I love San Francisco because of the close proximity of everything. Everything is within walking distance, and little Italy is the same. All the restaurant, the ambiance is quite different from anything else. I love Italian food so I guess that is why I love it so much. Worth a walk through :)

San Francisco does not have an area called "Little Italy" but the area called North Beach is a little Italy. Bordered by Chinatown, as is the case in so many cities, North Beach is restaurant and coffee house heaven. This area has shrunk as the Chinatown area has expanded, but still houses delis, cafes, butchers and bakeries - oh, yes, and Beach Blanket Babylon - and is a great destination for an afternoon.

Someone from Los Angeles must have started this posting. San Francisco has never had a neighborhood called Little Italy. The Italian-flavored neighborhood is called North Beach, and has the massive Italian church, St. Peter and Paul's; the Wonderful Washington Square for people-watching, great delicatessens, bakeries and restaurants.

It is sad to hear that Chinatown is starting to edge out Little Italy, so be sure to see it while you can! The food, the smells, the chatter, the buzz is memorably set in the midst of beautiful homes, parks and churches. It feels like a village in the midst of a big city. It is very safe to walk around here day or night, but the area is very hilly, so have your walking shoes ready.

Little Italy does really not look like Italy. There are only many Italian restaurants and Italian flags. I don't think that this makes a place look like Italy. So everybody who has already been to Italy will think that little Italy has nothing to do with Italy. There are other places in SF that should be visited, but not this one!

Skip Chinatown and stroll this area. Not nearly as trashy, with much better food, and a more relaxed feel. There are a ton of places to eat here although the prices are inflacted in the standard San Francisico manner. However, there are a lot of great places for food, and I haven't found a place yet that I didn't like. Many of the better eateries have sidewalk seating, which puts you in the middle of the milling locals and tourists. Though to beat that.

Great pizzeria's and sidewalk cafes. Some places are a bit touristy but a great part of San Fran to see. Try the Stinking Rose restaurant in the area and Stella's Pastry, they are really good. Stop into Molinari's to grab some salami to take home, yummy!
