We have visited Cannery a number of times; it is very close to the Fisherman Wharf area. The main attractions now are the Argonaut Hotel, which is very nice hotel that is very close to the cable car area. There is a restaurant in the hotel.
There is a visitor center and Maritime Museum. I like this museum as it is well done and gives a good overview of San Francisco. It has a brief movie to watch as well. It is free and if in the area, fun to see.
There is an ice cream shop as well as Jack's which is good for drinks and beer, There is both seating inside the restaurant as well as its great to sit outside in the patio area on a sunny day.
The Cannery has had an interesting past. It got its name as it was the largest peach cannery in the world. It was built in 1907. In March 2002 there was a fire alarm fire at the adjacent warehouse that also impacted the cannery.
In terms of the hotel there it is VERY GOOD.
In terms of the Maritime museum it is VERY GOOD.
Drinks at Jacks is also sometimes fun.
However if one is expecting an experience that is like Ghiradelli or Fisherman Wharf, it is more of a lonely building without a lot going on. As such, although I like parts of the Cannery a lot, it is an average attraction to see when visiting San Francisco.
We have visited a number of times, but far less frequently than other attractions in the area.

Very sad to see most businesses closed. There were only two restaurants open. The rest was all shut down, boarded up. You could so so much with it. Had chowder at The Chowder House, good.

We had a pleasant walk among the cafes and stores at The Cannery. This used to be a working fruit cannery and thus the name. NIce Views in the area.

Little seems to have changed since fellow TA Poster - DJ_guy's post from December 2010. The Cannery building itself looks very nice and seems primed to be a great little shopping centre and restaurant area. However, there are a lot of vacancies beyond the street level shops on Jefferson and as a visitor, we found the place strangely quiet and lacking in shops, restaurants, people and activity.
There is a good souvenir shop on the ground floor and a bar, Jack's bar that seems to dominate the far side of the Cannery. Both can be accessed directly from Jefferson street where there is a lot of tourist action. Beyond these two businesses, and cute little Ice Cream shop, the Cannery seems to quickly and eerily become devoid of energy, shops and just feels like something is wrong with the place.
At present, The Cannery is a difficult place to recommend considering the number of very good attractions in the area. Hopefully it will develop into a better option for visitors in time.

In 1907 Del Monte fruits and vegetables opened there Plant #1 in San Francisco producing 200,000 cans a day and then using San Francisco's port to ship products worldwide. Now this site is home to shops, great food outdoors and music. This was the first transformation from a working factory to a retail center in the United States. Great outdoor vibe. Check out the off Broadway theater. Lots to do and see.

We visited the Wharf area recently and decided to stop by The Cannery again to see if things had improved since our visit last year.
The good news is that the large number of vacant shops and empty space found here last year is now being occupied by the Academy of Art University. This is a good thing as it was just sad to see so much dead space in this renovated historical location.
Unfortunately, this particular tenant offers little reason to visit the Cannery, thus rendering it very limited as a shopping and dining location on the Wharf. There is a large bar, an ice-cream shop and a fun souvenir shop called Garage on the ground floor. A few other businesses occupy similar space on the street facing side of The Cannery, but that is pretty much it. Most of the interior of the building is being used by the University.
Overall, while in a much better state of affairs compared to last year, there remains little to see/do at The Cannery. Of note, however, is the good restaurant called Blue Mermaid that is right next door, serving genuinely very good clam chowder, much better than anything we've ever found in the more touristy areas of the Wharf.

Historic building but at this point not many shops or restaurants open. Disappointing as this seems like it would be a great location. I was there a number of years ago and it was much livelier.

Years ago, the Cannery housed fun and interesting shops featuring local artists and their crafts. Today it is a mostly vacant building with some office tenants. We saw a few restaurants and a bike rental shop on the ground floor.

I stumbled upon the Cannery on my way to Fisherman's Wharf. It's not as well known as the other notable areas of the Wharf, but it has its share of interesting shops and dining options.
What drew me in was a sign for Norman's Ice Cream shop naming it as the best in San Francisco. It's a small shop, but it has a wide variety of ice cream and dessert options, including some exotic tropical flavors. For a touristy area, the prices are reasonable and probably cheaper than the nearby ice cream franchises. There is an open outdoor area where there are sometimes musical acts playing, so it's a fun place to grab a bite.
