After our visit to Alcatraz we walked a short distance to visit the submarine. I felt that the prices were too expensive for the visit which didn’t even include an audio tour (other visitors seemed to have it - so not sure how we missed it). Inside, it’s an interesting 20-30 minutes of walking thru the confined and constricted space that was the workplace of many sailors. Great piece of history but overpriced.

It was an interesting visit and my son who is an enthusiast really enjoyed it but I find it difficult to justify the cost of $50 for the two of us. My son has a keen interest so was explaining lots of things so we were there for a little longer than I would have been had in it had someone with his knowledge with me and even then it was less than 30 minutes. There was no audio tour offered to us and the guy who took our money looked like he couldn’t be bothered to be there. My score of 3 would have been lower if it were not for my sons interest in naval history. To contrast the ship moored next door was $45 for four of us and we were given an informative introduction by a very interesting gentleman, a map and there was so much more to see.

We had a visit to this as part of the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off ticket so visited it on our final day in San Francisco to pass a bit of time.
They had a QR code on the ticket kiosk to get the audio tour on your phone which worked well.
Nice to see a bit of history.

Great submarine to tour. Download the audio tour before you go in - you lose cell signal once you go below into the sub - and it's hard to go back out to download it when you're chasing 5 and 6 year old boys! They loved seeing all the buttons and how it's different than a battleship (toured in LA the same week). Would do again.

Most of the boat is accessible via this self guided tour. You’ve got to be able to squeeze through some tight spaces and hatches. Steep ladders. Very well maintained. Doesn’t take long for the tour but it is worth a look. Knowing the history of the boat beforehand really helps

There was only one other person on the sub around 3:30 on a Thursday. It was pretty neat. For the audio, you scan a QR code and play it on your phone. I didn’t have any headphones so was playing it out loud. Maybe because I was alone and the sun was empty, I kept going too fast for the audio.

We were a family of four - with a 4 yr old and a 12 year old. This is highly recommended! No issues with our 4 year old navigating the ladders etc. The audio tour somehow did not play for me - maybe should have downloaded it fully before going into the submarine. The icing was the gentleman waiting when we got off who answered all our questions.

We stumbled across this gem while walking in and out of all things on the Fisherman’s Wharf. Great history and what a way to try to even slightly imagine what it was like for those great American heroes at that time.
$25 donation to tor the sub. It is kind of freaky because the sub still moves with the waves.

Interesting historical site to see beyond all the tourist traps. It was mostly empty when we went, so we were able to listen to the audio tour aloud on our phone. Wish there was a live person to tell stories or give more info. Took maybe 1/2 hour. A bit pricey….but teen enjoyed.

This was a really fascinating self guided tour.
You scanned a QR code and you got a free audio tour - only do not lose your signal as it is impossible to get signal again when you are down there!! Just let the audio guide play.
Really great.

This would be difficult for anybody physically challenged due to entrances that are tight and passagways that are narrow. Add to that the need to traverse through hatches to see the entirety of the submarine and the difficulty increases. Having said that, if you're not in a wheelchair I'd say give it a go. Only you know when to say, "Uncle."

Grazie mille.
