My wife and I visited on a whim while we were in San Francisco. We were floored by how large, varied and impressive the collection was. There was no special exhibit at the time of our visit. We just went through the main collection. It was well laid out and fascinating. It really gave us an appreciation for the variety... More

As usual, the exhibition was well curated, a manageable size and interestingly displayed. Asian Art Museum Staff are quite knowledgeable and eager to share their passion for Asian Art. A jewel!

As always, it was a pleasure to visit San Francisco's Asian Art Museum at the Civic Center Plaza. The museum has a very complete and diverse collection of art from China, Japan, India, Korea, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Himalayas, and other Asian countries, including stone works and bronzes, large and small, ceramics, textiles, jade, glass, puppets, and other art forms. The... More

Pros: Big museum (3 floors) across plaza from city hall. Variety of statues, pottery, paintings, armor, etc. Many over 1000 years old, all from Asia (India, China, Japan, Korea). Public restrooms. Free admission 1st Sunday of the month. Con: must pay to park.

They have Thursday night $5 special entrance for the younger crowd. Really awesome collection of asian artifacts. I live right next to it and often take friends who visit me there.

Internationally known, this museum is welcoming and user-friendly. The encyclopedic collection encompasses Southeast Asia, India, China, Japan,a little of the Middle East, and Korea, spread across three levels, beautifully displayed. It used to be housed in a wing of the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, but about ten years ago moved to the city's former main public library,... More

The Asian Art Museum's collections are amazing, refined, and beautiful to behold. You cannot miss with this experience, so take your time and truly savor all the galleries. Then take time for tea, snack or lunch in the cafe.

It exhibits various items from Asian countries, and sometimes, hosts special exhibits from some Asian countries. If you are into Asian Art, and into Art History, this is worth the visit

Formerly the San Francisco Main Library, the building houses (for several years now) the Asian Art Museum, which had been located in Golden Gate Park, next to the deYoung Museum. While convenient to the other attractions in the Park, the old museum was in need of extensive upgrades, and took advantage of the library's move to a new home. It's... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighbourhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
