Amazing history

A spectacular location to explore American history. I highly recommend the evening tour which offers additional areas to view and a more in-depth experience.

I highly recommend going to Alcatraz if you ever find yourself in San Francisco. Everything was very interesting. There is an audio tour included with the ticket price which is narrated by some of the former inmates of the prison. They also have an "escapes" tour where you learn about a few of the escape attempts from the island.

Did the behind the scenes tour which intertwined with the night tour. Very good time, kids loved it, ages 20 &15. Went over on 240 ferry, ended up with small group which was great! Jim and Sarah were our guides, very interesting stories, plenty of time to check things out. It's very chilly, wear layers, take water. When sun goes... More

This was a great adventure. Cost was $35 and overall I think it was worth it. You are ferried to the island and given a short talk on the dos/don'ts, then you set off. You are free to explore on your own. The auto tour is the best, a self guided tour with the voices of real officers and prisoners... More

On multiple other visits to the Bay area, typically during summer break for our son, we have been unable to secure tickets for Alcatraz. Now he is in college and were able to easily obtain tickets online over his winter break. The visit to Alcatraz was well worth the money. Our only regret was that we did not allow for... More

This trip was fantastic. Probably the best organised tour I have ever experienced. Took my parents. When you arrive on the island there is a mini train ( like a longer golf buggy ) that took them up the steep roads to the main building as they would have had trouble walking this. Is no problem to walk up though... More

Book in advance. Short boat ride to the island, the audio tour is very well done. Definitely a must when in SF

Book early, take a mid morning ferry and spend 2 hours on the Rock - make sure you do the audio tour and also spend 20 mins with one of the educational sessions

This is defiantly a must see when in San Fran. There is so much history and the self guided tour is fantastic. The staff also have so many interesting stories to tell. We did the night tour where you get great views of San Francisco skyline from the island. I would recommend booking in advance.
