**Please contact them at (808) 667-6706 or oceanproject.maui@gmail.com. Do not confuse them with Hawaii Ocean Project, which is a touring boat agency.** I wanted my young boys (7 and 9) to enjoy snorkeling for the first time, so I decided to go with Ocean Project Maui. It was easy to book a time to meet them and communication was excellent via email and texts prior to our lesson day. On our lesson day, Mel and Laura were really great with the boys - so patient and fun. The family got an educational lesson on the different marine life we would be seeing in the ocean. We got a lesson on how to use our snorkel gear and as a bonus we were fitted in wet suits, which kept us warm in the ocean. Mel and Laura were amazing at teaching my boys how to snorkel and pointed out all the sea life that we had learned about. We saw a lot of different fish and even a green sea turtle. The time went by so quickly and we had so much fun. The whole time we were in the ocean we felt safe with Mel and Laura. After our snorkel time, the boys were given an educational kit to take back home and use for a show and tell on more information about Maui marine life. I definitely recommend booking with Ocean Project Maui if you want a safe and fun-filled time learning how to snorkel. Even though we have snorkeled before, we learned so much and were able to use the tips that they had taught us for the rest of our trip.

Mel and Jen were awesome with the kids. They taught them about some of the fish they would see and they were very patient with them in the water. Would definitely recommend to any family with kids. Mine loved it and are still raving about it!!

The day spent snorkelling with Mel was pure heaven. I had booked my solo snorkel tour almost a year ago after reading so many positive reviews. Also, since I was traveling solo this trip, I wanted to regain my confidence in the water with a skilled professional and learn more about the sea life. And I am so happy that I did. As per the well laid out directions provided to me in advance, I met Mel at the Tennis Garden parking lot bright and early (7:15 am). The tour began, sitting on the grass getting informed about the different types of sea life we would be viewing and getting acquainted with the equipment, followed by two or three hours in the water snorkeling (I lost complete lack of time). Our pre-snorkel chat was so informative. Mel is extremely knowledgeable and you can see his love, passion and expertise shine through. He provided an overview of the habitat and life cycle of the green sea turtle and talked about the respect that one must pay to them. Basically, and this is overly simplified, don’t harass them or do anything that would alter their natural course or behaviour. If the turtle 🐢 is in resting mode and starts to surface for air, do not crowd or chase them - give them the distance that they need so they can continue to do what they were planning. After they surface and take the breaths they need (about three) one can then approach, but again, at a respectful distance and within their direct line of vision, which is different from ours. After the info session, we walked down to the beach (Kapalua Bay) but we didn’t head right in. We stood at the rails for about 15 to 20 minutes watching the conditions - Mel explained to me about swells, surges and waves and told me what to watch for before ever entering the ocean. He pointed out the shades of the water and explained that the darker shades signaled coral, the lighter shades sand (I hope I have that right). He indicated that we should always enter on sand and of course avoid stepping on the coral. We then went in, one boogie board between us to share and snorkelled around for a good 2 or 3 hours. Mel pointed out the different species of fish, and to my delight, we found a turtle resting. We stayed back for a while and as per our lesson, when the turtle started surfacing we were there to watch her take her first breaths above water. It was amazing. I also got a relatively close-up pic of turtle and me. Just extraordinary. I loved my day and my time with Mel. He is just such a kind and lovely human being. I don’t know how else to describe him. I highly recommend the snorkel tour with Mel and Ocean Project, whether you are traveling solo or with your family. Thank you Maui, thank you Ocean Project, and thank you Mel for a magnificent day.

Mel is a gifted teacher who is extremely knowledgeable about sea life and snorkeling in Maui. We loved the preview lessons we learned before getting into the water. The equipment was a perfect fit. Mel is detailed orientated and took the time to make sure we were comfortable knowledgeable enough to be successful snorkelers! While snorkeling, we saw green turtles, an eel, sea urchins, and a variety of beautifully colored fish. We have many amazing pictures to go with the wonderful memories we made. We did many fun things in Maui, but snorkeling with Mel was the highlight of our trip. Thank you Mel!

This was truly one of the highlights of our Maui Vacation. Mel and Jen are genuinely kind people who enjoy sharing their vast knowledge of marine life with people, especially with children. Our group was myself, the Nana, my daughter, son in law and our 5 year old grandson. Everyone of us enjoyed the experience. What they offer is great for the young and old. First we had a mini Marine Biology class. Mel and Jen spend time telling us about different types of fish we would see. They also taught us about the coral reefs. My 5 year old grandson, was intrigued and asked many questions. They then gave us very detail instructions on snorkeling. I have snorkeled for years and I still learned things I did not know about snorkeling. These tips made my snorkeling experience even better. We were at the most beautiful and perfect beach for snorkeling. Not only did we see beautiful fish, we were also able to identify them. I’m still pretty proud of myself that not only can I identify the Humuhumunukunukuapua, the state fish of Hawaii, but I can pronounce the name also. Mel then caught our attention and next thing we knew, there were 4 sea turtles swimming with us. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Towards the end of our experience, I suddenly and without warning got seasickness while out in the water. It scared me and I became anxious because I go to sick so quickly and we were still quite a way out in the ocean. Mel was amazing. He did everything to assure me that seasickness was common while snorkeling and gave me all his attention helping me back to shore. Thank you Mel and Jen for giving our family such a wonderful expertises but also for taking such great care of me when I become ill.
