Craggy walkways
May 2021 • Family
There are many places in this trail from where you might fall off to the detriment of your limbs. Very dangerous craggy walkways.

Great views, moderate hike
May 2021
We started from the east trail head around 3 pm so the brisk wind and some light cloud cover kept it from being too hot. There are some steeper sections but nothing crazy. Fabulous views back toward Kihei/Wailea and of Moloka'i, Molokini.

What a fantastic hike!
Apr. 2021
We did this hike up the western side of the trail to avoid the direct sun beaming down on us in the morning during the ascent. When you get to the end (along the line of wind turbines) make sure you go past them about 15 minutes to see the rest of the trail without going down the opposite end. Not sure how this trail could be done if we did it in the afternoon - just no shade cover once the sun is high up in the sky.

Take plenty of water!!
Mar. 2021 • Friends
****WARNING **** TAKE LOTS OF WATER!!! Especially if it looks remotely possible like it’s going to be sunny. Start early...6am?!? Excellent hike with incredible views of Maui and the ocean, great for whale watching during the season! Sturdy shoes are a must, sunscreen and a hat also. If you start at the parking lot on the Ma’alea side and go only as far as the turbines then turn back, the total distance is almost 5.5 miles. Great workout!

Meh! One-and-done....
Mar. 2021 • Couples
We read all the reviews... so went prepared. 3 of us wanted to do east to west, 1 didn’t care so we had him drop us at the east trailhead and then he drove back to west trailhead, parked and hiked from there. Worked great. We met up just downhill/west of the windmills, so it was great. We hiked on a windy day which helped with the heat; started at 9am, finished at 11:57am. I’m not the fastest hiker so others could prob do in less time. Views are good, but it’s the same view the whole time going up east side. Def prettier views going down the west side. Spotting whales might happen, but you’re so far away whats the point? It was great exercise, we took 32 Oz water and it was plenty. Def want sturdy soles shoes— rocks could be tough on flimsy soles. It was something new to do, we did it, don’t need to do it again.

Great hiking with gouges view

Yes it is all the way without shade, the wind does make difference. Making sure you wear the hiking shoes since few places kind of slippery with the rock and dirt. We had great time and would do it again!

Tough Hike - Beautiful View - Auto Burglars
Feb. 2021 • Couples
This was a tough uphill hike over rocks and an unsteady trail. It sure was beautiful at the top! The path is uncovered and a grueling 2.4 miles uphill - 4.8 miles total out and back. I’d recommend you pack snacks and water for the hike, and go on a cloudy day. Also, leave your car empty and locked. I saw a lot of broken window glass in the parking lot.

Great views from Maalaea side.
Jan. 2021
We completed one-way trail from Maalaea side (Use Maui Demolition as an address) to Ukumehame Trailhead which took about 3 hours at a leisurely pace for 2.5 ascent and 2.5 descent.

You can park by the road as the gate to drive upto the trailhead is mostly closed. From the road it is about .5 miles to the official trailhead on the Maalaea side where the trail starts to get very steep. The climb is hard and extremely strenuous but the views are very rewarding. If you do not have enough time to do the entire trail but love hiking I would definately suggest to hike from the Maalaea side with a timed goal. The climb from the Ukumehame side seemed a little easier but the views were not that great.

We did it on a cloudy day by starting at 2 pm ... on a hot sunny day the trail can be worse given that there is NO water, restrooms and shade along the 5 mile route.

We Ubered the one-way trip from Ukumehame to Maalaea where our car was parked. Caveat being the cell reception in Ukumehame could be spotty ... we were good with ATT but another group with Verizon was not as lucky.

Overall a great experience that we thoroughly enjoyed.

A Malibu hike in Maui
Sep. 2020 • Solo
Being in Hawaii, I’m a fan of slippery ascents, Kauai-style, deep into the tropical rain forest. Maui has tons, but for a change of pace, this hike from the east trailhead near Ma’alaea takes you the dry way up to a pretty vista overlooking Kihei and the Lahaina coast. It is not a difficult hike, as advertised, if you leave at the crack of dawn and have plenty of water. There is no shade at all, but it is steepest at the beginning, then is a relatively moderate ascent up to the windmills, the top , where I turned around, like most people, because I didn’t have a ride awaiting me on the other side. A fine, two hour jaunt if you do it this way. One suggestion: Maui Revealed, the most popular guidebook, suggests heading up in the morning, the way I did , to avoid having the sun in your face. If you want nice photos, however, I would head up around 4, so that your shots of the landscapes are not washed out or hidden in shadow but bathed in a golden glow. If you turn back at the windmills, you’ll be back at your car before it gets dark.

Good hike - go early being sunscreen
Mar. 2020 • Couples
The online content for this hike is pretty accurate. Between mile marker 11-11.5 on highway to Lahaina on the right after the tunnel if coming from Kihei (towards Lahaina). Good amount of parking. No shade from the sun at all and definitely need runners if not hiking shoes (no sandals or slip ons). Bring lots of water and careful not to roll and ankle. It’s really cool to see how big the wind turbines really are and we saw a few whales on the way up and down. Took about 2.5/3 hours up and down tho we did spend a bit of time watching whales. The view doesn’t really change from the bottom to the top - Main thing is to go up to see the turbines.
