I took this hike primarily to see the wind turbines which always fascinated me. I took the approach from the Kaanapali side and started in the bright sunshine at noon, alone. I met another single young guy who passed me, a couple on the way down and a hiking family near the top. It was very quiet the whole way.... More

We did this trail late February, starting on the trail about 8 am. Trail descriptions we had read was pretty accurate, trail is moderately steep and rocky. We wore our hiking shoes which were sufficient for the trail. We experienced rain which made the trail and especially the rocks very slick. The trail is well marked and very easy to... More

We did this hike with a 4 month old in a front carrier and an almost 3 year old in a backpack carrier. It was fine. We went from the west trailhead to the windmills and back (5 mile or 8 km total).

This is NOT a moderate trail as some guidebooks tell you. This is a reasonably difficult trail especially coming back down hill. Make sure you have excellent sneakers and I would strongly recommend good hiking boots. You are climbing over rocks most of the trail. Do not do this trail if you even have a risk of showers...there are old... More

We did the Ma'alaea half of this trail up to the windmills and back. It was a challenging up hill climb and took us about an hour up. We are in fair shape, but not super fit. The trail itself was challenging and fun, and the views were spectacular. It was worth the climb to get to the lovely flat... More

I agree with the reviews that say to start early on this one. We had plenty of water, sunscreen, and are used to hiking; however, I underestimated the intensity of the sun as it was our first day on Maui. You quickly climb and are able to stop and get great views of the ocean (and in January, abundant whale... More

Great hike! Not crowded (saw 11 people total), magnificent views, about 2000 feet elevation gain to the windmills, not too hot, a little breezy. The down sides are minimal: coming down it's hard to watch the whales and hike (terrain is rocky in places, definite ankle rollers).

This was a challenging hike for me, a 55-year-old woman in pretty good shape. Parts of it are somewhat steep, parts are nearly flat, parts are rocky, parts are just clay. My husband and I did this hike on a very windy day. A wind advisory had been issued and sustained winds at the wind turbine crest were in the... More

moderate trail with some steep parts -- rocky and uneven in many parts. Beautiful views over the ocean with numerous whale sightings. Did the trail twice in a week. Bring water.

this is a very enjoyable short hike on the south side of West Maui - i've hiked it now a couple of times, both very recently. the hike is over a variably groomed trail - at times very smooth (so large stretches can be run), but much of it is quite steep with an irregular surface. that said, the footing...
