Quiet and less touristy than the mainstream beaches around Kapalua, this beach offers the best of both worlds: snorkeling and boogie boarding. The beach is best from mid-morning to early afternoon. The enjoyment evaporates when late afternoon winds begin to kick up sand. For boogie boarding, stay to the left (west). For snorkeling, enter the water from the right (east) and make you way to the protected cove just beyond the rocks that stick out above the water. Inside that cove, I saw lots of fish and two sea turtles. If you are a good swimmer, continue beyond the point on the right into Honolua Bay. The downside of this beach is that is has neither restroom facilities, nor a tap to wash your feet when you exit.

Several of the recommended beaches in Maui were marred (in my opinion) by crowds and by development (condos, etc.) right behind the beach. Slaughterhouse beach is free from both of those. When we were there, there was only one other family at one end of the beach and a sunbathing green sea turtle at the other end.

This beach has less people as the gatekeep is limited parking, but you can find spaces throughout the day. A quarter mile walk down some stairs and paved path will get you to this gem of a beach. Half the day most is in the shade due to its orientation, but you can spread out to sunny spots. There are waves which you can body surf on, watch for rocks, and the sand is great for little kids and adults alike. Cool rock features to the far left of the beach if you want to walk about.

What a gorgeous beach! The scenery is lovely, and the waves aren’t overpowering. There are rocks and tide pools to explore along either end, and the snorkeling was phenomenal. We did a snorkel tour yesterday to Molokini Crater, and honestly I think we saw more types of fish tooling around Slaughterhouse, not to mention a TON of turtles. As others have mentioned, there aren’t bathrooms or food vendors, but that wasn’t an issue for us. It’s also nice that it’s set back from the road, and there’s nice shade available as well. Parking was a little tricky, so visiting early in the day or later in the afternoon would be a plus. I could easily have spent all day there.

Perfect beach for those who like to snorkel (husband and I) and those who don't (teens). Unlike Honolua Bay, there is great boogie boarding and a lovely, sandy beach. It was a nice calm day, so we snorkeled out around the point into Honolua Bay as well (saw a large eagle ray out at the point). Once the currents picked up later in the morning, we stayed in the bay and explored all the nooks and crannies. Tons of turtles and fish, and eel and octopus. Coral is less the star here, but there are many other snorkel locales with better coral. The large, healthy fish population is definitely the highlight here. Great visibility in the summer months.

Beautiful beach and an easy walk down the stairs. Although it was windy the day we were there, it was somewhat protected and very enjoyable. Parking could be an issue but we were there when Hawaii had just opened up with it's pretesting program so parking was not a problem.

Worth it. Rocking waves not super deep. Wild cocks and chics roaming the beach within reach of your towels. Locals and tourists together. Really loved the wild waves and it had some shade for some sunburn relief. My toddler loved the flat parts. More ideal for adults or older kids with the rowdy waves. Very scenic for a family photo on the cliffs.

Went to this beach per a locals recommendation our first day in Maui! Got there around 8:30am and got one of the last spots. There are a ton of stairs to walk down so pack lightly! The beach is just gorgeous. Tide pools, roosters on the beach, some turtles in the water, and a cool cave our kids loved! Descent snorkeling

This was my first visit to Slaughterhouse beach. Very nice beach and uncrowded. Likely the reason is the parking which can be a challenge which is just parking on the side of the road. Looks like the town built a nice stairway down. There, I believe, are 88 steps. spaced nicely for easy decent and ascent. Note there are NO Bathroom facilities! Lots of beach with tree shade. My husband loves to boogie board here. There is a sand dune, I guess that is beyond the shore line. This is where to catch the waves. The water was crystal clear. Not the best waves today for boogie boarding.
I personally like PT Fleming Beach 🏖 the best for a day of Boogie Boarding (I only watch) because there is ample parking, showers and bathrooms, plus a lifeguard and picnic tables.

My family and I have been coming to Maui for 10+ years and we have snorkeled in almost every Bay; Kapaulua, Black Rock, Napili, up and down Kaanapali, Honolua, etc... and Slaughterhouse Beach consistently offers the best experience. Parking is extremely limited so this is what we typically do; Make sure the sun is going to be out, limited cloud cover is best. Plan to arrive at the small parking lot between 7am - 8am. You should have the beach almost to yourself and you will beat all the snorkel tours. Head into the water on the right side of the beach near the rocks. Surf should be minimal on that side and when you are in the water, stick to the right side.
Obviously seeing a sea turtle is not guaranteed, but we always see something exciting. Similar to Honolua Bay, this Bay is also considered a "reserve" so no one can fish in here which apparently all the fish know that because they are abundant.
We were given the recommendation to snorkel off of Slaughterhouse Beach by experienced free diving locals. Most people visiting will head to the neighboring Bay, Honolua, given that is where most of the snorkel tours go, but do yourself a favor, get up early, beat all the tours on catamarans and drive to Slaughterhouse Beach.

Is it generally safe to go boogie boarding and snorkeling in November?
Written 10 October 2018
The waves at Slaughterhouse can be quite big in November... it depends how good you are at Boogie Boarding. Snorkeling is better at Honolua Bay which is right ‘next door’ to Slaughterhouse. I’ve seen people snorkel at Slaughterhouse, but you need to get through the big waves first and it could be ‘dicey’ near the rocks (which is where the good snorkeling will be... near the rocks on the right side of the beach going towards Honolua Bay).
If you want calmer water and great reef / snorkeling in Nov, try Airport Beach (north of Blackrock right in front of the Westin Oceanfront Villas).
