About
Princeville Botanical Gardens is a family owned and operated garden paradise located in the Princeville area on the magnificent north shore of Kauai. Established by The Robertson Family with the help of their close gardening friend Michael in 2001, this 9-acre property has been transformed into a breathtaking garden with dramatic landscaping in two steep valleys. The tour includes homegrown honey and fruit samples, as well as a chocolate tasting that teaches you the history of chocolate making. You'll have fun learning about the uses and folklore of native Hawaiian plants and exotic species from around the world. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Visitors can experience the garden on pre-scheduled tours on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Tours are not recommended for children under 6 years. Moderate mobility is needed to go on our nature walk. Please be sure to call us before visiting. Thank you!

    A Little Strenuous, but Fun
This is about a one mile walk, with a lot of pauses, though out the grounds of the Princeville Botanical Gardens. It is very interesting and informative. The chocolate tasting made a nice intermission. Be prepared for mosquitos (wear long pants and sleeves if possible). They hand out walking sticks and, depending on the weather, umbrellas. There are a few areas with tricky steps and slippery gravel, so the walking sticks come in handy.
Mahalo! we are happy you took an adventure with us! Our garden has quite a bit of topography, flora and fauna! We love how official everyone looks with their walking sticks:)

    Totally exceeded our expectations!
This was our family’s first time here (two parents + 6yo) and the staff and tour itself did not disappoint! Lisa, our tour guide, was incredibly knowledgeable and was great at answering any questions from our group as we went along. The tastings were awesome, delicious, and informative. You could tell that the entire staff was so dedicated and passionate to the work they’re doing and treated the land with the respect it deserves. Highly recommend!
Mahalo for your kind words! We do love the place and our guests with all of our heart and so glad to know that you can feel it!

    Loved this NEATure tour!
We visited in September of 2023 and WOW, this tour exceeded all expectations! Not only are the gardens just absolutely wonderful, but everyone was so kind and informative! It was so cool to hear about all the plants/flowers that are in bloom, some history, and then of course, the chocolate tasting! Delicious, informative, and so fun! The cherry on top is that our guide expanded on various questions from the group and followed up on them later in the tour. They also provided local, natural bug spray at the beginning and throughout to make the tour more comfortable.
Mahalo for your kind words! We have such an excellent team and a wonderful guest experience is our passion! We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed yourself throughly! Aloha!

    Excellent!
I wasn't planning on going to this garden until I read an encouraging message written in the notebook at our condo. I signed both my husband and myself up and nabbed the last two tickets for the only date we could attend. It's a beautiful garden laid out by true garden loving owners who then sought help from professionals. The guides are excellent, enthusiastic, and fun. The chocolate and fruit tastings were really interesting and learning how cacao is processed was very educational.
Mahalo Rosey! We are so thrilled that you could join us for a tour! So happy to know that our happy guests are spreading the word! Aloha and a hui ho!

My husband & I had a wonderful time touring Princeville Botanical Gardens. Our tour guide, Lisa, was fabulous & extremely knowledgeable. Your Botanical Gardens are truly an exquisite and tranquil place to visit. After about an hour in, I was lost in its magnificence. One of my favorite pastimes is taking pictures of birds and dazzling flowers. I was not disappointed. Your indigenous succulent fruit appetizers were delightful. The chocolate tasting tour was informative & delectable. One suggestion, maybe the guide could offer to take pictures of the guests, with their cameras, on the gorgeous garden foot bridges.
Mahalo! Thank you so much for your kind words! We are so happy to know that you had a great time enjoying and photographing the garden! That is a fantastic suggestion! we will be sure and let the guides know! Aloha and a hui ho!

My husband and I went on the garden tour and we loved it! We saw so many beautiful and unique plants. It was our tour guides first group, and he did a great job! Him and his wife are so knowledgable and they truly care about the plants and the work they do with them! We highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to see learn more about many of Hawaiis beautiful plants!
Aloha! We are so thrilled to know that you had a great time on tour! We are very grateful that we have such an amazing team of plant lovers here at the garden! Mahalo nui loa!

Well worth the price of admission!
Amazing unique plants and terrain and very knowledgeable guides willing to answer all your questions while sharing their obvious passion for their environment. Highly recommend. We lucked out with sunny weather the whole tour but I understand their recommendation for proper footwear etc if caught in rain as the terrain could provide some slippery challenges.
Thank you for your recommendation and 5 stars! It's true we receive around 80 inches of rain a year and good footwear makes a big difference on our diverse terrain! Mahalo nui loa!

Beautiful, lush and well taken care of botanical garden and chocolate tasting tour. Learn about chocolate and how it is grown and processed. Take about a mile walk over the garden, sampling fruits, honey and chocolate. Tour guides are very knowledgeable and nice. Will not be disappointed.

    BEAUTIFUL GARDENS AND TASTY CHOCOLATE
Even though it was raining and the trails were wet, we thoroughly enjoyed the gardens. Our tour guide was very informative. We learned a lot about chocolate while enjoying the tasty treats. Be sure to follow the directions to the gardens which are given in your confirmation letter. They are located in a residential area and not where you would think they would be.
We are so glad you found us! We are nestled into the mauka (mountain) side of Princeville and the directions we send are detailed and important! We are elated that you enjoyed the tour, even in the rain, which happens a lot due to our 80"+ rain per year! Aloha and a hui ho!

Brad was a great tour guide, couldn't stump him on any of the plants, he knew all the plants that they had on the property. The garden was groomed perfectly and the flowers were gorgeous. The chocolate tasting and tea and juice were a great little way to have a relaxing stop. And the fruits were so juicy. If you love plants it's a great place to tour

The botanical gardens were not something I originally had on my list of things to do on Kauai. One of the other guys in my group suggested it, I agreed based on the reviews here, and I'm glad I did! We went with a group of 7 guys for an afternoon tour in February (the company was accommodating when we needed to adjust our original reservation for 8). Our tour guide Brad was extremely knowledgeable and we learned a lot from him. The fruit and chocolate we ate along the way was delicious. We all agreed it was a great change of pace from the more typical hiking/beaches we had been doing the rest of the trip.

Thank you for the kind review and overview of our tour. We'll pass along your compliments to Brad, who loves walking folks through the gardens. And don't forget to come visit again! New flowers are in bloom year round and our fruit selection changes seasonally. We hope the rest of your visit to the islands was as enjoyable as your time in our gardens. Mahalo nui loa.

This place receives very high reviews. So I had very high expectations for our visit. The experience exceeded my expectations. The tour consists of a 1 mile hike through the trails of the Arboretum. There are some short inclines and declines along the hike, but most of it is along flat ground. Walking canes are provided for anyone who wants one. Our group of three, 67, 66, and 59, appreciated the offer. Most of our tour group was composed of seniors and everyone had a rather easy time of following the hike. The staff of the Arboretum was very nice. The staff member who welcomed us was very welcoming and helpful. Our tour guide, Sarah, provided us with an excellent experience. She was very personable and friendly and had a great way of mixing in her personal experiences with her explanations of the plants and trees. She provided us with samples of fruit from many of the fruit trees. The chocolate tasting occurred about halfway through the tour. It was a unique way of learning much more about cacao and chocolate making than I thought I knew. I will admit that a three hour tour was a bit tiring, But it was well worth it.

This is a wonderful guided hike through some of the most beautiful and exotic plant life on Kauai. Our guide Lisa displayed an encyclopedic knowledge of the current and historic significance of the island’s vegetation which was imparted with an infectious enthusiasm that could only come from someone who genuinely loves what they do. It is well worth the price of admission and we would all recommend it 10/10. Oh, and they give you chocolate to sample as well :)

My partner and I had an absolutely amazing time touring the Princeville Botanical Gardens. We were actually on island doing research for a book, and this experience was a top 3 for us in learning and having fun (while tasting amazing treats) all at the same time. Shout out to our amazing guide Troy who had the whole group raptly paying attention, enjoying, and laughing. Also Abigail took amazing care of making sure we got there on time and had an amazing time as well. Overall couldn't recomnend more!

The garden is very beautiful with many easy to navigate paths and a lovely stream. We enjoyed our tour and the tropical fruit and chocolate tasting. I would have liked to have time to wander the garden by myself, but it is only accessible with a pre-booked tour.

My spouse and I visited the gardens on the Friday of our last day in Kaua'i, and I'm *so* glad we did. The garden was filled with amazing, beautiful plants; I took so many photos that I ended up struggling to pick just a few to share. Our guide, Heidi was extremely knowledgeable (note that she's only there on Fridays) and enthusiastic, though the other guide there, Robin, was also brilliant, and their presentation on the preparation of cacao to chocolate was excellent, and accompanied by delicious tasters. The walk involved some uphill/downhill/stairs, and my hiking boots were absolutely prescient. The garden provides walking sticks and umbrellas, and I'd recommend taking advantage of the stick. Long sleeves and pants are also my recommendation, since there are mosquitoes in the more tropical areas and even bug repellent seemed to not be enough to stop them. A small price to pay, honestly, but heads up. I'm so grateful to have found it and I hope we get to come back one day.

Had a wonderful time on the tour! So many amazing sights and a really informative guide. Definitely wear walking / hiking shoes and comfortable clothing as most of the tour is not on a paved trail and grass can be slippery if wet. Also, to fully enjoy this tour I would recommend someone be able to walk for at least 2 hours without issue. It's not a strenuous hike or anything - but there are stairs and unpaved trails so some level of physicality is required. Bring bug spray (they have some for sale if you forget), sunglasses, and sunscreen so you don't have to worry about burns or bites. Really enjoyed this and learned a lot!

My husband and our children all told me this was the highlight of our trip to Kauai over April vacation. We were staying in Princeville, and I was looking at activities that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg but would allow us to experience the natural beauty of Kauai. The Princeville Botanical Gardens was less than ten minutes from our resort, which worked out perfectly.

Our guide, Robin, was outstanding about answering questions and leading the tour. We enjoyed all the samples that were provided, and we all took hundreds of pictures! I appreciated the adaptations the gardens made due to COVID, like having all the samples parceled out for each group.

The walk was not strenuous, but there were some steep inclines and slippery spots. We appreciated that the guides offered us both walking sticks and umbrellas, which we made good use of. Overall, very beautiful, well-paced activity that all ages enjoyed!

I had read previous reviews about the Princeville Botanical Gardens tour & it was definitely a must see for us. Unfortunately, it was booked so I put us down on their cancellation list & I got a call to say they had a cancellation. Lucky us! It was a nice walking tour with some hills. It rained on & off but they provided umbrellas and walking sticks. More importantly bug spray was also provided. Beautiful flowers and plants that we don’t commonly see. Troy, our guide was wonderful.
